#1 (Gold Coast) – David Swallow (WA)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 19/11/1992
Comment: Had a great year of football where he exhibited all the skills that will make him the number draft pick for 2010. He's been widely regarded as being the 'full package' in relation to his skills, work ethic, mind-set and willingness to learn. All this and he reads the play like it's on a giant neon flashing sign. Many have said he is as good as Chris Judd was at the same stage without the injuries. Elite is what this kid is, with many saying he does everything a good midfielder should and some.
#2 (Gold Coast) – Harley Bennell (WA)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 74kg, DOB: 02/10/1992
Comment: You may think the enticing thing about this kid is his speed or x-factor or great kick or pressure tackling or good decision making but you would be wrong. I think the real thrill for Gold Coast with this kid is the fact you could play him anywhere on the ground: FP/HFF/MID/HBF/BP. If you gave this kid a roll to do it and some. He is masterful in a variety of roles and given this flexibility he could only be the 2nd round pick.
#3 (Gold Coast) – Sam Day (SA)
Height: 196cm, Weight: 96kg, DOB: 06/09/1992
Comment: As far as athleticism is concerned this kid is number 1. Great leap, great hands, great speed if he gets his kicking regime sorted look out, because this kid could be at the very least a central target in the F50 for years to come. Would be an ideal target in the GC forward line and you would expect them to get maximum game time into the kids as soon as possible to kick start the concession they have already received. Round 1?
#4 (West Coast) – Andrew Gaff (VIC)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 16/06/1992
Comment: The obvious choice for a team struggling to inject pace and skilled players into their midfield, West Coast will not hesitate in recruiting this little beauty and give the mighty Nic Nat some valued flair in the centre. A fine kick, sound decision maker, run and carry type player who's more then happy to get a quick flick out handball run carry and deliver and don’t worry he will deliver as he prides himself on hitting targets.
#5 (Brisbane) – Dyson Heppell (VIC)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 14/05/1992
Comment: Like Gaff, Heppell gathers the ball well below the knee’s and is keen to display his sound decision making and pin point kicking with his raking left foot. He's good right across the board with plenty of zip and a real nuisance to catch should you be unlucky enough to play on him. With an aging midfield it stands to reason they would recruit Heppell. He may be given a feel for the game off a HBF or BP exposing a lazy small forward, plenty of time to slide him to a midfield spot if he shows himself adept at the top level.
#6 (Richmond) – Jarad Polec (SA)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 12/10/1992
Comment: Highly rated by a number of officials and when you can run and carry 10-20m at a clipping pace and still boot the ball 55m-60m with a raking kick you can see why so many people have shown more then a passing interest. Reminds me a lot of Clinton Young but seems to have more time and looks very comfortable storming along a wing. Would really complement the developing engine room for Richmond and could even play a HBF role setting up play before moving into the Mids should he prove himself.
#7 (Gold Coast) – Tom Lynch (VIC)
Height: 199cm, Weight: 91kg, DOB: 31/10/1992
Comment: Might be calling this one a bit early but I think Gold coast can afford another development player. He's big and athletic and has shown to be increasing adaptable after playing basketball early in his career. Might need to put some more weight on and really learn his role in the forward line but perhaps 1-2 years on we may be looking a mobile agile monster capable of pulling down a good mark and adding a much needed target to a young side. Then again this way he keeps developing he may just find himself a gig much earlier then expected.
#8 (Essendon) – Shaun Atley (VIC)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 13/09/1992
Comment: No surprises here although I must confess it's hard to see what sort of influence Hirdy has over the recruiting staff. The thing that stands out for me is this young man could be more then capable to play in a variety of roles including inside or outside mid, HBF HFF and still be influential. If it was sheeds I might of said Caddy for his furious and buffeting type work in and around the packs something sheeds would find irresistible. The dons have indicated Mids are priority and this kid fits the bill to a tee. Don't be surprised if he starts round 1.
#9 (Gold Coast) – Daniel Gorringe (SA)
Height: 200cm, Weight: 88kg, DOB: 02/06/1992
Comment: Would be an ideal development player and with Josh Fraser showing him the trade he could really excel. He has already shown glimpses of top tap work and is more then keen to change up his style depending on the contest and opposing ruckman. Obviously will need to build some muscle however I think if he some quality time to develop the transition from development player to 1st-2nd ruck could be achieved smoothly.
#10 (Gold Coast) – Kieran Harper (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 5/06/1992
Comment: The X-factor of this kid will be to much for GC to resist, Skinny kid with plenty of nip, likes to duck and weave around the place and loves a goal. Although he's on the thin side I wouldn’t doubt they will pop him at FP a let him frustrate a small defender to tears. Some are critical that here is not consistent enough however he's still young opportunistic goal scorer and that’s exactly what they are opportunistic. If he's given a chance at a loose ball or given to much room he will do damage make no mistake he may take a maybe a year or two but to really show the sort of football required but when he does you will know about it.
#11 (Gold Coast) – Josh Caddy (VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 28/09/1992
Comment: One of my favourite players of the draft and I'm gutted he will go so early I would of dearly loved to see him in the brown and Gold. He's a little bustling ripper of a player, loves to get in there and drag the ball out with his teeth, under packs and in the thick of traffic, many criticised the fact that when he gets to AFL he will encounter bigger bodies and it will render his style obsolete until he puts on more bulk but I think that a load of rat shit. You can't teach that sort of tenacity, he'll put his head over the ball and make you proud to be supporting GC. Some time in the future he'll be hand delivering it to GAJ again and again until you sick of hearing the 2 names together. Good skills and obviously the kicking test really showed the true potential of the Cad.
#12 (Melbourne) – Jack Darling (WA)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 87kg, DOB: 16/6/1992
Comment: Another kid I really rate and I can’t help but beam when he hits the ground jumps up and throws himself in again, I think purely on effort and the lack of a real goer in the Melbourne forward line this kid is the one. In all honesty he could go anywhere and I could foresee that if he slipped to 19 HFC would have a real close look at him. He is a good grab and given the engine room of the Dees has gone from a v6 to v8 in one season you would expect then to give them something to kick to. I really like this kid and the professionalism of the MFC’s young brigade I think is just what this kid needs. It will wash over him and he will repay them in kind.
#13 (Gold Coast) – Patrick McCarthy (SA)
Height: 196cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 11/03/1992
Comment: This pick is based more on a needs basis then anything else and I think even if he doesn’t get a KPD role in the team he would be more the capable of HBF and would thrive in either a purely defensive role or a run off job, either way the kid is more then worth pick 13. Matt Watson is also a massive chance but I think McCarthy will pip him. He has a good set of hands and although he might not get a gig early in the year I think he will force his way into the team sooner or later. Moves well and his overall athletic qualities lend itself to a variety of roles within the back half.
#14 (Adelaide) – Ben Jacobs (VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 9/01/1992
Comment: This is where things get tricky, there are 6-7 picks that could all go around this point and many of the players have some wonderful attributes as well as ability to do a variety of roles. I think the loss of Mcleod, Edward and Bock has weakened the backline considerably and I think Young Ben would be a good fit for them on there current situation. He loves to burst out of defence and send a long raking kick to eager forwards. Reads the play well and is one of those kids that every year adds another string to his bow. I big plus about Ben is from round 1 he could play. He knows his role and if Neil Craig allows him to do it he won’t disappoint.
#15 (Geelong) – Isaac Smith (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 30/12/1988
Comment: It’s no secret that the Cats love the look of this kid and when you take into account that lack of speed for the cats with Wojak and Varcoe expected to do everything, this kid could really help out in a big way. Loves to get forward of the Tap work, receive the ball taking time to blow away the chasing player in the process. Finishes well and is mature enough to come straight into the team. I think it was in the VFL final that this young man showed what he was made of burning off player after player. Will be picked up by the cats and will play sooner rather then later.
#16 (Port Adelaide) – Scott Lycett (SA)
Height: 202cm, Weight: 98kg, DOB: 26/09/1992
Comment: The aging brogan only has 1-2 more years in him and the ruck stocks have really taken a beating. The Cloke gamble didn’t pay off therefore they’ve only been left one option to recruit a good tall talented ruckman and this will be Scott Lycett. (Don’t be surprised if the slide another back-up ruck into the equation as well al la Skipper this year for HFC)I fear the other ruckman waiting in sidelines haven’t came along as they expected and therefore they will gather the best available ruckman.
#17 (North Melbourne) – Jed Lamb (VIC)
Height: 182cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 19/10/1992
Comment: This will another of my major disappointments for the draft period I was desperate for Jed to last to 19 however I could not find it in me to indulge myself of a fantasy that will not come. He’s flashy, he’s good below the knees, he kicks goals and he screams quality. He like his bright boots and he likes to be seen doing the impossible and I’m sure that the shin boners will teach him the art of hard work and humble beginnings which will produce results. They expect a certain spirit to be maintained and young Jed would excel when he puts his head down and learns the value of discipline and teamwork although you know he always makes you smile with his mercurial effort around the goals. Whoever gets this kid I can’t wait to see him play he’s a ripper.
#18 (Carlton) – Matt Watson (VIC)
Height: 195cm, Weight: 101kg, DOB: 16/07/1992
Comment: CFC has signalled there intention to recruit a good backman and Matt Watson is a bloody good backman. He has been much criticised for his lack of pace however what he lacks in pace he makes up for in unabashed skill. He set up work is nothing short of amazing with a kick that makes recruiters smirk and shake there head exhaling as they do the word ‘jesus’. He set up play after play without seemingly breaking a sweat in the championships. He’s a great size as the CFC lacks a solid power back with the failing of Thornton to take the role Matty Watson may be their man. In addition what CFC do have is a good unit of quality medium defenders capable of working up the ground. They are quick and dangerous they just need someone to get it to them at the right place at the right time. Matt Watson is that man.
#19 (Hawthorn) – Billie Smedts (VIC)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 08/06/1992
Comment: With Jed Lamb snapped up by an eager North Melbourne I think it only logical to recruit the next best player. Chance Bateman is 30 now, Crawford is gone and Burgoyne wont be around forever it seems only natural we would choose someone as skilled as they are agile. He a good kick and he doesn’t mind using either foot with excellent results, and the best thing is you can plonk him on HBF or HFF a let him run wild. No Hooper and no Peterson means there is a spot begging to be taken and with Guerra another year older he can certainly be forgiven for thinking the HFC is the promise land. He doesn’t seem to falter being defensive or offensive which is a credit to him, impression is he’s a great kid. The only thing against him is he’s on the thin side but it never hurt Ellis chances now did it.
#20 (Fremantle) – Patrick Karnezis (VIC)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 23/04/1992
Comment: Very difficult to estimate where Fremantle will go with there first pick however I think they have some really great stock in the mids and have invested well within that area over a period of years, what they could do with is a creative forward who has plenty of speed a good pair of hands, knows where the goals are and for mine Patrick is the way to go. Would compliment Pav, Fyfe and provide at the very least another avenue to goal or set up shots regularly. He’s also been known to play higher up the ground and set up play with confidence and efficient kicking.
#21 (Sydney) - Brodie Smith (SA)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 14/01/1992
Comment: In all honesty Brodie could go a lot sooner with a number of clubs showing interest and why wouldn’t he when he’s above average and every one of the attributes it takes to make a good midfielder. The sad retirement of legendary player Brett Kirk will leave a gap in the mids for years to come and young Smith will go along way to providing an eventual solution to this problem. He’s going to need to put on some weight but if you’re a serious Sydney supporter you would be thrilled to pick up this little gem.
#22 (Western Bull Dogs) – Mitch Wallis (VIC)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 24/10/1992
Comment: Good by hand and by foot with ball winning ability. Courageous and hardworking the feedback I have heard from doggies’ supporters is they are thrilled with the arrival of young Mitch and so they should. Has been on the improve year after year and with the family link was obviously too much for the WBD recruiters to resist. I think he was also getting more and more attention from other recruiters with his talents becoming plainly obvious. Great get by the WBD and no doubt will reward in them for years.
#23 (Geelong) – Reece Conca (WA)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 12/08/1992
Comment: Just not sure about this one, rumours have linked him with Fremantle which would make perfect sense being a WA boy. Moves well and shows balance and poise with the ball. Reads the play well, kick is spot on and hit’s up targets, good with his hands showing a good mark and clean with them to boot. Another player that is above average across the board and with a solid pre-season should could be a ripper.
#24 (St Kilda) – Jayden Pitt (VIC)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 07/10/1992
Comment: No one can deny this kid is a beauty and rumours are his services are required by number of clubs. Don’t be surprised is he goes sooner then later his talent and disposal are right up there. Moves well, efficient kick, good hands and moves smoothly with confidence and seems to have a lot of time when he gets the ball. Like a lot of players he’s a skinny kid and I think had some niggling injuries so that might put a couple clubs off, but with Dal Santo and Hayes getting older, the time to recruit good mids is now so that they may learn the tradecraft of a couple of champions while they are still around.
#25 (Brisbane) – – Josh Green (TAS)
Height: 179cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 24/08/1992
Comment: Again another accomplished mid here with good all round skills, ability to find and use the ball well. A classy player no doubt and with Brisbane mid stocks rapidly diminished who can blame them for picking him up. Good endurance and speed and moves well when in possession of the ball can’t remember what he defensive skills are like but if he could add these to his array of skills he might just be what a lot of people whisper he might be a top clas all rounder.
#26 (West Coast) – – Dion Prestia (VIC)
Height: 175cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 12/10/1992
Comment: Most had tipped prestia to end up at the Dons at 31 but I think WC will trump them early much to there disgust. He’s a little pocket rocket that gets down and goes like the clappers if given the chance. A real nightmare to man up on and to catch I would imagine as well. Pretty nuggetty and could even be ready to play next year much to the delight of WC and this I would think is the real sweetener.
#27 (North Melbourne) -– Luke Parker (VIC)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 25/10/1992
Comment: I think this guy is a ripper of a player and NM would be thrilled to take him mind you. He seems to be the ideal player for the shin boners and even seems to have that work your guts out, never lay down and you will be rewarded attitude which NM covets so much. Good skills and will give you 100% contest every time. One of those kids that will attract a following if he continues to develop in the way everyone thinks he will, good endurance and a really interesting one that will be sure to be watched by many.
#28 (Brisbane) – – Jamie Cripps (WA)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 23/04/1992
Comment: Would be suited to a rebounding job and with the loss of so many runners for the Lions it stands to reason they will replace them as quickly as possible. Run and carry work is great and has a nice kick. Again he’s a player that gets better and better and with some good fitness work could really burn off some slower opponents if they don’t watch themselves. Duffield type player but with more run and carry. Has shown a willingness to learn and improve parts of his game.
#29 (West Coast) – George Horlin-Smith (SA)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 22/12/1992
Comment: Just keep hearing about this kid for some reason not originally from a football background, perhaps basketball I think. But he continues to show improvement again and again with a lot of pundits asking themselves “how much more improvement can he achieve and where is his ceiling?” I think WC will take a small gamble here on potential alone. They have already secured some great players and it’s my guess that they may just be right on the money here. I get the feeling that various recruiter have been trying to keep this little gem quiet in the hope to snaffle him late in the draft, it wont happen.
#30 (Richmond) – Lucas Cook (VIC)
Height: 196cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 03/03/1992
Comment: It’s plainly obvious that Richmond mids are coming along nicely with improvement on the horizon all they need to do is give Reiwoldt some help. Reiwoldt had a great year but without help he’ll soon become the Buddy of 2009 where he was double and triple teamed. Lucas Cook could not only provide a target but also pitch in with a goal or two of his own should he continue on his rise. He kick, marks and reads the play pretty well and has all the beginnings of a conventional FF. Obviously he lacks the bulk to really mess with the big backs but given a season or 2 in the gym it stands to reason he’ll continue to push for a spot. I only wonder if he could slide into a HFF lead up role in the near future?

#31 (Essendon)
Cameron Guthrie (VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 19/08/1992
#32 (Brisbane)
Ben Newton (WA)
Height: 184cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 08/08/1992
#33 (Melbourne)
Luke Mitchell (VIC)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 96kg, DOB: 28/2/1992
#34 (Carlton)
Mitch Hallahan (VIC)
Height: 184cm, Weight: 81kg, DOB: 23/08/1992
#35 (Port Adelaide)
