I used to drive (stoned to the bejesus) from Nightcliff to the NT News, around the back of Fannie Bay Racecourse, stoned to the bejesus belt, every morning,
with Elliott Smith humming out of Darwins 'J's and it was like driving to heaven.

If you have Last FM. Type in Bon Iver and they will play Bon Iver plus artists they consider similar.

Last FM is a great way to hear new music. Worth the effort to download.

It is hard to recommend music to somebody that generally listens to music that you don't.
No offense intended, but I do not get thrash, death metal etc.... so to say to a fan of that try Smog as I just did is fraught.

Jim White is touring here in March. Check out his The Wrong Eyed Jesus (Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted). A superb mix of country and folk. I am looking forward to his gig.
Giant Sands and Willard Grant Conspiracy are folky in style at times and well worth a listen.
