Apparently its has been going on for a while, has anyone else heard of this?

Strange concept but apparently it works wonders in the U.S, Surely this has to be a Hardwick/Clarkson idea!!!

Hawks and Tigers training togetherBy Tim Clarke

ShareIN a huge departure from the usually highly secretive world of AFL training, Melbourne AFL rivals Hawthorn and Richmond have joined forces in a bid to fast track their young players.

Hawthorn and Richmond have come together to help train their youngsters

In a move that may shock some fans, it has been revealed that the Tigers development players have been running regular drills against their Hawks counterparts at Waverley Park.

Hawthorn football manager Mark Evans said rather than revealing club secrets to potential opponents, it was borrowing a tactic used in the United States to empower their future stars.

“I don’t think (we are bedfellows) but it is two teams coming together to run development training together and I think that has worked pretty well for us,” Evans told Radio Sport National.

“When you are teaching kids how to play you want them to practice as a group and as a unit

“But when you put them against a team which contains (Sam) Mitchell, (Luke) Hodge and (Lance) Franklin they can predict what they are going to do.

“We wanted to do some shadow drill work against someone who would not have complete understanding of what we wanting them to do.

“It is more about giving them the chance to play the lead role in decision making.

“It is shadow play, there is no competitive stuff, it is particularly about ball movement and how you get to replicate parts of the game.”

Evans denied either club would be losing any competitive advantage by coming together.

“It is development – it is all pretty basic – if you watched one game you would have this stuff down pat,” Evans said.

“It is basic drill work, rather than any secret tactics.”

Listened to Mark Evans this morning and he said it was llabout the non contact side and allowing the B grade kids from both teams an opportunity to learn the finer points of the running game and how to think their way forward with the ball.

If it allows even one of our kids to learn some finer points of the game then it has to be a win:thumbsu:.

:thumbsu:I SEE it as a plus. Although it is non-contact, I recall my own years spent playing football, I would never go as hard when it came to contact at training than I did when it was against the 'real' opposition. Should breed some competitiveness!!

I think that this is a great initiative between Hawthorn and Richmond,Clarko and Dimma are great mates and both massive NFL fans with close links to the Green Bay Packers through our former President in Ian Dicker.

Agreed, get that game time into em

Why tell the media? I mean it is a mutually beneficial agreement and now the whole league ****ing knows. One bit of a pegged advantage........... gone.

i think it's a really good idea for both teams, and if it helps richmond's young kids then it's a win win situation

I'd doubt we would have told them, more likely a media chopper trying to get a birdseye view of one of our lockout sessions

Couldn't agree more Pausy. Our kids cubs are coming from a long way back so all options need to be considered.

Why not????
Are you that naive to think that 38 players on our list, however many on the rookie list, plus coaches and officials ... x 2 (add the Hawthorn equivalent) are going to keep a secret like that from leaking out.
One player involved tells his best mate or girlfriend, it's then everywhere.
The club should be congratulated for being proactive.
I'm tipping that if Westhoff, O'Reilly, Casserly or whoever did an injury in one of these seassions and it came out afterwards it was in a drill with the Hawks boy, you'd be the first jumping up and down wondering why the club didn't say so.
Other clubs would have known within 24 hours about the arrangement.
Kudos to the club for a great initiative and being open and accountable about it!
