Is it feasible that we could have kept Tarrant for one more year? Not only to see out his contract, but to use him in a trade deal for Chris Judd. West Coast expressed their interests in Trade Week and made their intentions clear they wanted to secure a big name player, none other than Chris Tarrant, as it turned out Fremantle pipped them on the finish line.

FWIF It may have been a win-win situation for Collingwood.

Chris Tarrant + 1st Rounder + Quality young player > (in exchange for) Chris Judd.
It would be enough for Worsfold, especially if Judd wanted out.

Your thoughts?

We did well in the trade - We got good value for him.

Sure, if we kept Tarrant, and he had another good year somehow, we could have used him as part of a trade for Judd.

However, if he had another year like last year, his value would have been even lower.

As it stands, unless Tarrant has a particularly great year, I would suggest that Ben Reid will probably have more value on the market by year's end at this point. He's very talented, looks set to get a taste of AFL action despite barely being old enough to be drafted, and is versatile KP talent as well.

If we really want Chris Judd, and he wants to come here, we have plenty enough to make a deal for him.

Not necessarily, we could say he needed a change - "a fresh start".

I'm stoked with Ben Reid.. I'm just saying we could have done potentially better down the track. I reckon it's safe to assume that with every first-round pick every side has a player in mind - St. Kilda got their man.

Name me the odds as it stands, I doubt West Coast would want to do a deal with Collingwood in the not too distant future.

Yes, we could have said that, but with another year like last year, there would have been less people that believed us.

We traded him at the right time - Before it was clear whether he was past it, but after it was clear that he wasn't what we needed, not to mention the fact that we traded him to get the #8 pick in the strongest draft in a long time.

As I said, having Ben Reid, from a trading stand-point, could end up being just as good value as Chris Tarrant.

Draft picks have less value than a young player who has shown promise at AFL level, because they're basically much the same, except with less risk. Given that Ben Reid is virtually as young as many of the draftees will be next year, if he shows something this year, his value will be higher than the #8 pick was when we traded for it last year.

If we want to trade for Chris Judd, Ben Reid would be just as strong a trading piece as Chris Tarrant.

As Dazza would say "tell him his dreaming"

West coast would not give up a 1st round plus a mid range player for taz. There is no way in hell they would expect a deal like this.

It would need to be taz , didak, top 10 pick and even then I doubt they would take it. There would be the biggest dutch auction in the history of the game if tax came up for trade and I doubt that would be the highest bid.

I think we are one tall forward short this year. Reid cant be expected to hold down a key position with no games behind him and Fraser is better value playing around the ground as a mobile bigman.

And part of playing around the ground spending time up forward.

Anthony Rocca plays permanent FF, and Travis Cloke plays permanent CHF.

All we need is pinch-hitting from Josh Fraser and Ben Reid, and the forward line is plenty tall enough.

If Rocca breaks down?

We have enough depth; it's a matter of quality. Malthouse may dismiss 'the age factor', but Ben Reid is the youngest player in the competition (that's a fact). Guy Richards hasn't improved from what I've seen of him thus far, so I would imagine Fraser may need to ruck for 70% of the game, unless Chris Bryan steps up and releases him. In that case, Guy Richards and Chris Bryan have a significant role to play this year.

If Rocca breaks down, even if Tarrant played, we'd be ordinary - See 2005.

I keep reading statements e.g if we had kept Tarrant...Chris made the decision to leave Collingwood besides the assistant coach no-one on the Coaching team wanted him to go, especially Malthouse. We most likley would of continued to play him injured and still expect him to star and he just wouldn't been able to deliver. On the Fox Sports news it mentioned the Fremantle Ruckman hand-fed their midfielders who then speared the ball to the forwards..who then both delivered. An operation, some rest and he is contributing to a team again...
I hope we go well even though his goal kicking was disappointing last year he was number one in assists..we will miss that. Every year Teams change its never the same team playing, so we just go with what we have this year and move on from Taz & hope its enough for a final's berth

Tall forwards is one thing we dont lack. We have Rocca, Cloke, Fraser, Bryan, Reid and Brown as options, along with Buckley and Medhurst as tallish types, and Maxwell and Lonie who could at a pinch be swung forward. And then there's Dawes who sounds an extremely exciting proposition.

Having said that, we definitely need a solid season from Rocca.

Judd is a pipe dream. IF he moves and IF we can convince him to come to us, IF we can accommodate his salary we would have to do something we haven’t been able to do very often and part with quality players and draft picks to get the trade over the line. Meanwhile we traded a bloke that possibly kicked away a premiership and didn’t improve his kicking, is injury prone and has head issues. Tarrant has a lot of talent but he lacks brains. The trade was ok. I would have preferred an earlier pick but we got what we could in a reputedly hot draft. Worry about Judd IF he is moving and then drop all you valuations of all of our players because we don’t have one in the same league now that Buckley is nearing the end.

We got a fair trade for Tarrant. Reid and Medhurst are adequate compensation.

Reid needs a few games under his belt before we assess who got the better end of the deal. On the other hand, Medhurst could be a bonus - he is ready-made and will play senior football this year. A good contributor, but he is not as influential as Chris Tarrant.
