I won't type the T word cos everyone will cry.
The way I see the side in 2 to 4 years:
B: ?, FRAWLEY, RIVERS?
HB: ?, GARLAND?, ?
I don't know why everyone thinks our backline is good? Yes we have some promising key backs, but that is it our run out of the back half is appalling.
Strauss looks promising, he is a good kick and has good leg speed but let's see how he goes in the real stuff before we judge him, hopefully he can develop nicely so we can have one hole filled.
Bennell is the type of player I would be looking at, he's quick and loves to run but he is prone to poor kicking and far too light so until he can address these issues we won't see the best of him.
Of the other possibilites: Cheney I don't rate, he is a poor kick and can't run and carry. He's one of those recruits we seem to get that plays his best football 18 and stagnates for the rest of his career as I feel Bartram and Jones are doing.
MacDonald is a player I don't see a real future in either. I think he will just be another Wheatley and we need to get better that. All he is going to do is stop a young backman from developing quicker.
Of the key backs Frawley is the only player I have full confidence in becoming a qualty player. Can Rivers overcome injury and become the Rivers of old? He hasn't done anything since '06. Can Garland overcome injury and actually bulk up so he can take a key post?
Of the other possibilities Warnock has too many similarities to Miller he's solid but there is no improvement in him at all, I think Garland is a better option. Keep Warnock as a back up. Hard to see where Martin fits in, we can only afford to have 3 talls in the back half firstly because none of our talls can kick well and secondly because we need to get more run.
C: ?, GRIMES, DAVEY
FOLL: ?, TRENGOVE, SCULLY
IC: MOLONEY?, BRUCE? GREEN?, JAMAR
Our run and carry is a real worry. It seems to evole solely around Davey which is unhealthy. Hopefully Blease can develop enough to help us in this area. I really can't see any other youngster helping us out when it comes to running. We really have to start recruiting quick ball carriers.
If Grimes can avoid injury he should be a gun, the fact that he can play down back is a great benefit to the club.
Scully and Trengove are our reward for list management. 2 players that will play as massive part in our revival and will hopefully turn our midfield into a force again. Add Sylvia as a mid\forward, Moloney, Jones (I can't see both in the same team cos they are too similar), Bruce, Green (who we will need to look at replacing them between the 2 to 4 year period because they will be in their 30's) and with Gysberts and Tapscott (also a mid\forward) developing and if Viney's son is as good as others have suggested then our midfield options begin to look bright.
The ruck is clearly a problem (NikNat would have been alright). Jamar because he doesn't do a lot around the ground I see him as a second ruck. Hopefully Gawn can fill that spot. Spencer is too raw ATS and I can't see Johnson, Meeson, Martin and Fitzpatrick making it as ruckman.
HF: SYLVIA, MORTON?, BATE
F: JURRAH, WATTS, WONAEAMIRRI?
Morton has too big an engine and is too good a mark to be wasted as a winger\flanker getting cheap kicks he has to build up and start becoming the important player that we need him to be by taking up a key post.
Bate will be our Hahn just doing a lot of bullocking work.
Jurrah will be our x factor.
Watts once he builds up and gets on the field he will eventually have to become a star.
Will Aussie ever overcome his hamstring injuries? If he can he will be the defensive, crumbing forward that we desperately need. Besides Davey he is our next best kick.
Petterd has a great opportunity to play a big part in our future but he need to show more consistency and work on his foot skills. Even though he is not as good defensively as Aussie he is really courageous, a really good mark and knows where the goals are. Hopefully the Gold Coast don't nab him.
I haven't seen much in Jetta and Maric to say that they will play a big part in our future but they still have time.
If Dunn doesn't play forward then it is a waste of time having him on our list.
Miller should not be part of our future. No other club would have put up with a player that has done so very little for so long. There is no way Miller should have been at the 1 club for as long as he has.
Bailey has signed up for next year, so this year's results are not really important. It will still be like last year all about development, trying to bulid a list that will allow us to challenge for the flag.
Next year will be all about results, so shouldn't we hope to finish with a priority pick and then make our move, especially when you consider that we have at least 7 holes to cover and those holes definately won't all be filled by the players that we have on our list right now. I think we are just over half way through our rebuilding phase which leads me to my next point.
The 2010 NAB Draft
I've read the draft prospectus which is on big footy.
It will obviously change a lot during the year these are the top 25 prospects in the draft ATS Atbury, Bennell, Cook, Cripps, Darling, Day, Gaff, Gorringe, Green, Harper, Heppell, Lamb, Liberatore, Liddy, Lycett, May, Michie, Mitchell, Parker, Polec, Smith, Solly, Swallow, Wallis, Wilson.
Out of that Liberatore and Wallis will be at the Bulldogs under the father\son rule and May is apparently tied to the Gold Coast under the NT zoning rule although I haven't seen any evidence confirming that. If anyone else is suppose to go to the Gold Coast then I haven't read it.
What I have read is that there are 4 guns in the draft Swallow (already at the Gold Coast), Darling, Day and Bennell then it drops off a bit. I'm not sure how deep the draft goes but we should still get a good pick at 6 or 8 maybe a player like goal kicking midfielder Parker who trained with us in the pre season.
So am I willing to see more pain so we can get another young gun to the club even though it won't be 1&2? Bloody oath, pain is a lot harder to take if we don't get anything for it. 2011 should be the year that we are looking at to climb up the ladder.
