TOA's Phantom Draft (long post)

anyone know why Deboer didn't nominate? He seemed quite a decent prospect

Yeh it doesn't make much sense to me either. It's not like he's doing year 12 or anything next year. Very strange move IMO.

The only thing I can think of is if neither WA side had shown interest in him, he thought he might be able to get another crack at impressing them next year.

I think it's more bottom age players have a huge year they make the 18s squad they're never sure they are going to make the final side, even Rich had doubts he'd make the 25, they come home pretty mentally and physically exhausted go into their mocks around draft camp time, if they nominate they'de be doing interviews the 5 weeks leading up to TEE, finish their exams get drafted, pack up and move 3 weeks later with no results, no Uni preferences and no end of school celebrations, maybe just to much to absorb in 1 year.
Won't make any difference to his footy career, in the colts finals he was setting up plays as good as any 17yr old i've ever seen, he will be a star next year and prob 2-4cm taller

And for all we know he may do a knee or shoulder for example and miss a year.

IMO a player should get onto a list well in demand. If he really wants another year before taking the step, do what Ball & Ellis did and make it clear you will not be available for selection.

great stuff as usual toa. hope the prediction is right on garlett being picked up is a very handy player in my opinion. Jahran Jackie is more a half back wingmen I would of thought though thats my only question. Great to see Pears improvement has been noticed and the additional ais squad inclusion must of really helped him.

For the record, here is an order I am more comfortable with.

Round 1

Pick 1 – Carlton – Matthew Kreuzer
Pick 2 – Richmond – Trent Cotchin
Pick 3 – WC – Chris Masten

Quite like the Collingwood selection of Mayne, albeit I cannot see us taking 3 mids. At least one will be tall or a ruckmen unless they plan for that in the first round of the rookie but I doubt it.
I think it's a strength of TOA's effort not to lump us with the fourth or so best ruckman just because we "need one". Hine showed last year that he'd rather overlook the ruck if the quality isn't there.

Griffith is a likely mature aged rookie.

Hi TOA, nice read.

Would be interested to hear your reasoning (or read a profile) on Jack Steven going to Collingwood. Both he and Jaxon Barham played for Lorne FC as well as Geelong Falcons, so i'm wondering if that was the line of thought you chose or whether it was 'best fit'.

Michael Turner was singing the praises of Jack Steven all year (as one would expect he should of all the Falcons players). My gut feeling would be Geelong with a late selection.

Note that I have no idea how he compares with other juniors, but few kids from my neck of the woods make it, so would be interested on your thoughts / profile.

I have to be honest, I havent see that much of him. I know he's quick but his kicking can let him down. To win a TAC B+F as a bottom-age player is a good effort in anyones language.

I placed him at the Pies because I read on here and also from another person that the pies were slowing alot of interest along with Freo.

Definitely prefer your more detailed version TOA, the first list didn't have Richmond taking a single tall player. A mid, kpp & ruckman with our first 3 picks is much preferable and I'd be very happy with Cotchin, Gaertner & Putt.

Hope we get Morton though

With the latest shortened version, I'm going for accuracy in terms of getting hits on players going at the correct selection based on what I have heard. The longer version took more account clubs draft balance and needs.

huh?

apart form mourish, i cant think of any other 'smokies' we've taken in recent years

Juniper was another smokey but he was rookie listed and well worth the risk. Turned out he didnt want to be an AFL player, like many recruiters had feared.

TOA- like your second effort better from a WC point of view.
Have WC shown any interest in dangerfield?
and I hope Mcevoy slips to 13

TOA - notice you have Tommy Rockcliff at Pick 37 to the Roos, where you didn't have him drafted in your first attempt. Could you give me some info on his height/weight and type of player. All I really know is he is from Murray Bushrangers and his name has been floated around a bit.
