Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Boyd ends up just like Tippett. He's the one that everyone needs to compare him with, IMO, and like Tippett, he may even end up playing mostly ruck down the track. Like most his size though, he might not start coming into his own in that sort of position until he's around 24yo, so they could be overpaying for him in a pretty big way in the meantime, so it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

I wouldn't rule that out either - having seen him earlier this season, I thought that, at this stage of his career, he looks a bit more comfortable in the ruck than he does down forward.

I hope we're both wrong though. $7m over 7 seasons (is that his deal?) still isn't bad if you get 3 awesome seasons as a kpf at the end of that.

Hard to justify spending that on a ruckman though, even if you get 4 or even 5 good seasons out of him.

He'll be a forward who spends time in the ruck, not other way round. He has all the tools to be a key forward.

Big second half of the season coming up for Tom. I can feel it oh yeah.

I said earlier in the thread that I thought at this stage of his career Boyd looked more comfortable in the ruck than he did down forward.

So it was odd that Luke Beveridge has said that Will Minson is a strong chance to come back into the team soon. You'd have to be a little concerned about Boyd if Minson - a guy the Beveridge clearly doesn't rate as a fit for his system - is ahead of him as a ruck-forward.

I would reiterate what I've said about not being concerned yet, and about Boyd still being a good buy even if he doesn't come on til the last 3 years of his deal... but I still think if you're a Dogs fan, you're entitled to be disappointed that Boyd is apparently now behind Minson in the pecking order.

Boyd has 3 games back from a serious shoulder injury, prior to that he played every game? Minno has yet to play a game this year, and maybe won't.

so he will have earnt 4M before he becomes a handy player? that is ridiculous.

I cant see him playing in front of Redpath tbh.

It's funny that people malign him for taking a huge salary but not leaving GWS.

If i was taken pick 1 and was forced to go to that club I'd be on the first Vic offer as well so no judgement here in regards to that.

What was said above is true when you're on a million a year at this age the spotlight is on your head.
It's funny because a club offered him so much money, not for him taking it.

The dogs didn't pay him $1m a year thinking he'd be a $1m player straight off the bat.

They view him as a 7 year player worth $7m - so if, in the last 3 years of that deal he becomes a $1.5-2m a year player, it's not ridiculous at all. It's great, long term planning.

I don't understand the point you're making...

I was mainly relaying what Beveridge said in his presser yesterday about Minson being close to selection.

Yeah but Boyd main position is ruck. If anything, minson would be over roughead and Boyd over Campbell.

Bevo also said Boyd isn't competing for Redpaths position

Yeah, that's almost exactly what I said a week or two ago (a few pages back) - that the problem he'd have getting back in is that he's not competing with Roughead or Redpath, he's only competing with Campbell.

Bev plays games with the media every week. Would be shocked if Minno plays. Probably trying to keep him keen too because he might be needed at some stage this year.

Yep pretty much this

Did a journo ask Bev 'how's Minson going?'

If so, he's hardly going to say 'Minno's seeing out his contract by running half-arsed around the VFL each week'

Boyd is playing ruck to make him more versatile, get him involved, build his tank & his agression.

Minson is still a very good old-style crash ruckman when he wants to be. If Boyd turns into a ruckman close to Minson's level he'll be a good one.

However, he is already a far better key forward than Concrete mitts Minson could dare dream of. Same goes for Roughead & Campbell.

The boy can play, he just needs the belief and the tank.

This is simply not true.

No, its the greatest gamble in the history of footy. One which has already backfired. The game has moved since Boyd got his pay day and big key forwards (which is what is he getting paid for) are yesterdays news. Todays game is mobile not sit around the square and see who's the biggest / strongest.

Did you say that about Hawkins too?
Nope, Hawkins was eased into a pretty good side. By 2009 Hawkins played in a winning Grand Final side kicking the most important goal of his career in the final QTR. Boyd is not Hawkins and i believe the Dogs have better options currently. Time might see Boyd come good, it's still early days, but that investment is looking decidedly shaky .....

It's already backfired? He was on minimum wage last year.

He's half way through his first season on big money, and he has another 5.5 years to go.

I would suggest that you're being more than a little hyperbolic. Travis Cloke is not in and of himself evidence that his style of forward is outdated - especially when Boyd still has ample time to turn his body into one more close resembling Kennedy or even Hogan.

I think Boyds immobility is massively overplayed. He ran a sub 3 second 20m and that was before he entered an AFL environment and has slimmed down. He has shown a few times this year that he actually has a hell of a leap on him that I was unaware of, now when you couple that with being 200cm, a long reach and a proven ability to judge the ball well in flight and mark it at the highest point its going to make him extremely hard to stop in a few years.
