Tom Boyd

Well if you think you couldn't have pryed a decent key forward from a club for 1 million bucks a season instead of going with a kid who you would need to spend probably half of his contract developing before you get anything out of him then i believe you have no idea.
Lucky the bulldogs have more of an idea than you

Probably should've just drafted Wright with the pick they gave up along with Griffen for Boyd. Has shown a lot more glimpses of what he could be, despite being younger and not on massive money. Easy in hindsight though.

Stupidest trade of all time..

getting close to 1 million this year by all reports and done nothing at all.

Mason Cox has shown more as far as im concerned.

They are paying a million a year to develop him and probably wont see anything for 2 more years at least. What a waste.

Could have got an established key forward for that price.

Surely the Treloar trade takes the cake. Yeah hes good but TWO first rounders????? Talk about trading your way out of a future

Treloar was proven top quality though. Boyd is/was all potential. You effectively gave up two top 10 picks for him anyway (you would've got a top 10 for Griffen).

Treloar would be leading our B and F at the moment. Sure we expected to probably be higher on the ladder and slightly overpaid but 2 first rounders are really only worth what you draft.

We drafted in Sharanberg and Freeman with 2 first rounders who have played a total of 4 games between them in 3 years. Happy to have Treloar he has shown so much already

Would have a nice cool million spare in their salary cap as well..
Would have been struggling to meet the minimum salary limit, but we could have chased other targets.....

Nope, Hawkins was eased into a pretty good side. By 2009 Hawkins played in a winning Grand Final side kicking the most important goal of his career in the final QTR. Boyd is not Hawkins and i believe the Dogs have better options currently. Time might see Boyd come good, it's still early days, but that investment is looking decidedly shaky .....

Eased into a champion side.

And never forget he was so bad early on he was hand balling shots 30m out to his teammates. But let's all agree he really hit the ground running and was a champion from day dot

Minimum wage last year? Can you provide a link?

The game has changed. Lumbering talls aren't popular.

Google is your friend

Name a bigger gamble?

I'll go Scully

Jesus. Let's all take a minute to gather ourselves.

Clearly you have missed the point. Mason cox in his first 5 games has shown more than Tom Boyd has. Simple

Its easy to dominate at under 18 level when your bigger than every kid. In the AFL when you aren't so big anymore its much harder.

And you went again. You're not very good at this, are you?

Name a bigger gamble?

Removing a premiership coach from a side that just finished top of the ladder and paying a rookie coach a few hundred K a year to take them progressively to the bottom of the ladder might be one.

They've gambled a couple of million bucks - it's not that big a gamble in the context of the HISTORY OF FOOTY.

He was still in the 2nd year of his rookie deal last year mate, this is common knowledge.

If you're stating an opinion without that knowledge, I'm not sure why I'm even discussing this with you.

It's funny how nobody rates him but Bulldogs fans. Most expensive VFL player of all time

What does my "team supported" bit say on your screen?

Haha no.

Treloar wasnt a guess. He is a gun.

Boyd is potential. I think he will come good but it was a crazier trade than Treloar.

Sorry, but Mason Cox is a staggeringly bad example.

Even if we accept your premise that he's shown more in 5 games than Boyd ever has (which I doubt you'd find a lot of agreement on from those who've watched Boyd closely), it's pretty widely accepted that key forwards come on a bit later on. And it's nothing to do with experience, it's about getting their bodies right, and finding the balance between strength, agility and mobility.

Cox has 5 years on Boyd; he also has a college basketball career behind him, which makes our TAC cup set up look like Under-12s. He might not have played much b'ball for OSU, but spending 2-3 years as essentially a full-time college athlete, learning about his body and what he needs to do to get the most out of it, gives him almost an athletes lifetime over Boyd in terms of experience with his body, and experience in being a high-level athlete.

Shocking comparison

So Thomas Boyd is being paid 7 figures this season so in 4 seasons from now he can be as influential as GAJ, Fyfe and Franklin? Cause that is the kinda money he will have cost the club if they only get 3 good seasons out of him....

Peter Wright is 19 years 9 months old and has already produced more. Why not take a shot at him instead? Would have cost half as much or even less.

Obsessed.

wow that makes it worse. he's getting 7M for 6 years? geezus.

true it can still be a genius move. if he's the best big man in the game from 2018 - 2022 and they win multiple flags I'll agree it was pure genius.

if not they fcked up....imo.

agree shocking comparison.

one has played the game his whole life.

the other has probably played 25 games in his life and is nearly 7FT so as you say big guys take time. He'll be a freak with 50+games under his belt.

Don't even try to compare the two. Treloar is their best player, Boyd is terrible and doesn't look like making your team in the near future

People can have a go at Boyd's output - many dogs fans question it too. But let's not rewrite history here - Gordon wasn't waving a blank cheque across the comp looking for any KPF. Our captain went AWOL and announced he wanted to be traded and only to GWS.

So in amongst the turmoil, when the head coach was let go too, the club tried to make a statement and solve a long-standing issue at the club relating to the lack of a dominant big guy up forward.

History will tell if it was a good move - if he helps win a flag he's worth it irrespective of his stats imo. But even if not let's agree it was a complicated situation and not a simple 'go and get an established key forward from anywhere'.

Imagine if Hawthorn traded Hodge and pick 6 for Jonathan Patton. That's essentially what the dogs have done. Seems mad now - I hope it works out for them.

Half my family are doggies so I watch every game. I've been putting up with the 'poor old doggies' syndrome for nearly 30 years. They could have made the same statement spending half as much.
