Mind you, his contract has done no damage at all. Not only have we re-signed everyone we wanted to but we've added a premiership winning free agent since Boyd joined the Dogs.

I posted this a long time ago in another thread and it's taken a little while to find... (apologies for quoting myself, but **** it....) Also note that this was before the draft, but after the trade period...

So, when you take a look back over the past couple of years with the benefit of hindsight - also remember to look back and see what was actually available to us at the time. If Griff walked out this year, with the side playing consecutive (hopefully) finals campaigns - we'd probably be able to attract a wider variety of targets to the club.

Are we paying overs - yep. Said it then and say it again. (NB - I think it's 6.2M over 7 years, 200K for the second year and an average of 1M per annum from then on - not 7M over 6). Could we have got him cheaper ?? I would have certainly tested the waters at 750K per annum, with potential increases - but that's life... Perhaps we wouldn't have got him for the lower figure, I don't know...

But so far we've kept the list together, been able to improve through clever drafting, trading and FA. So Boyd's big salary appears largely to be something that worries the likes of Damien Barrett and co....

And do you all want to be grouped with the likes of the Purple ****knuckle ??? Surely not....
Nah we should have just given Josh Kennedy $1m per year and had him for 5 years. He was sure to come. All we had to do was ask.

Good write up though.

Old mate Barrett on the Footy Show saying that Boyd earning about 1.5 million this year and next. Deal will then get a little cheaper thereafter for dogs he says. Also saying it could put pressure on likes of Campbell and Stevens who are unsigned.

While no disrespect intended for Campbell and Stevens, this is a far cry from his original comments that we'd never be able to keep Bontempelli, Stringer, Macrae, Libba etc together if we signed Boyd up.....

He just makes shit up when he has an agenda.... And he ****ing hates the Dogs....

Ta. I don't mind the discussion and I agree he's overpaid for output - but at least lets have some realism around the discussion about what we could have done.... While there was some symbolic resistance shown in the Boyd deal, there was also some logic to it. Hopefully he can fulfill his potential and we can spend countless hours bumping this thread over the balance of his contract....

There is no one here who would claim we'll ever get value from the contract but there was, and continues to be, so much more at play than money with him IMO.

Agreed....

This. But I like your imagination....

It was widely reported that Boyd and his daddy met with Gordon in the middle of the year, you can deny it but it wasn't serendipity that he demanded to go there and there only.

They knew how ridiculous the once in a lifetime money was and grabbed it.

It was widely reported that we met with Patton. Suddenly that changed to Boyd after the whole thing kicked off. So either the first stories were incorrect (possible) or people were just retconning to make their earlier work seem more accurate (also possible).

Prove it.

It didn't happen.

It did happen and it's not uncommon.

My point is that the demonising of Griff is unfair. There was a lot going on at the Bulldogs at the time and there were a lot of cracks. It is always hard when a captain leaves particularly when a club is struggling but shit happens.

Boyd said all the right things to our recruiters and the media and then negotiated a monster deal to leave us whilst still contracted. He was that desperate he rang our coach and CEO and begged them to let him go. It was a piss poor tawdry selfish and spoilt thing to do but realistically he did us a massive favour as he never would have established himself with us.

He is no world beater but he's not a goat either and will carve out a career...he'll just never deserve the dough but you don't really need him too anyway.

As opposed to Griff who met with Cameron and co while in contract and still contracted for the following year, but then promised to stay to the club - then walked out and refused to speak to anyone and threatened to retire if he wasn't traded. While Boyd stated he would stay in Sydney and play on if the trade couldn't be done.

A couple of questions here from an outsider's view:

Do you guys mean Koby Stevens? He's already doing his Rihanna.

Don't you think the Collective Bargaining Agreement currently being neg will take care of an Campbell, and many others?

Your claim that Gordon and Boyd's father scripted this entire trade some time before the end of the season is entirely false.

Your views on Griffen are ridiculous. I won't trawl over old ground with him but he displayed the worst form of leadership in AFL history. He should be utterly ashamed of himself.

This ... Griffen lied to the club and ran away to hide. Luckily for the Dogs his best days are clearly behind him :)

Yep, this is Koby we are discussing. I think I'll need translation on the second sentence though.....

I believe we have offers in front of both, but as Campbell in particular is having a much improved year, he may be holding out for a little more.... The CBA will certainly help ease any SC pain we may experience, as we largely have a youthful list - with significant potential for improvement.

Dickson just signed on ... the Boyd deal has had no impact on re-signings so far :)

Yes the Bulldogs are perfect and everyone else is evil.

No point continuing with this. Enjoy Tom

Agreed.

This is what I don't get... Boyd and Griffen are hardly comparable.

Those Dogs supporters on the board will remember how I went against the grain in the tumultuous time. Most of us were questioning Griffen's integrity and loyalty, but I was merely saying that we can't look at it black and white and the club culture was toxic and there were rumours of player revolts against Brendan McCartney as a coach, and anybody who lost their love for the club and their love of playing would want to get out of the City of Melbourne.

But he was still a club captain who right up until he requested the trade gave all signs that everything was okay, had previously said on the record he 100% wanted to be a one club player and had a greater responsibility than Boyd did. He was a senior player who if he may not have lied was not entirely truthful. Leaving that with a year on his contract was poor leadership.

Unlike a lot of Dogs fans I don't begrudge him for leaving (a lot do) because of the toxic environment of the club in 2014, but the way that he demonstrated a lack of leadership and communicated to the club was pretty despicable, and nowhere near in the same room as how Boyd came to us.

I just wonder how it landed on the million a year. Surely 700k would have been massive overs for a bloke who had been at a club for 1 year. Just seems strange he would get the sort of money when surely s much lower figure would have been acceptable.

Most at the Dogs board would agree.
