Tom Boyd

looks uncoordinated, dropped about 5 absolute puts tonight

He kicked 3 and got 18 touches ... at least give him credit when he plays well .... I can think of other young key forwards who have never reached either of those numbers

Not a good footballer, simple. Not agile enough, not skilled enough, doesn't know where to run/patterns.

People compare him to Tom Hawkins. Difference is Hawkins at least has football nous and skill. Boyd doesn't.

In my opinion.
Yet he was the better player of the two tonight, in a losing side.

6 frees for him tonight two that got him goals and a late goal on top of that. Was ok shouldn't have to ruck.

...and rucked.

Hawkins 2 goals 15 touches as a full time forward in a winning team.

Still developing but tracking nicely, thank you

I don't care how he was at the start of his career.

He has football skill and nous. Unlike Boyd.

Hawkins took a couple of years to develop like most big blokes but showed from day one he had talent to work with.

Boyd has shown zero talent so far. Not even a whisker.

Ha ha ha

You're a bear of very little brain, Cotchy...

Free kicks didn't get him 2 goals, would have kicked the 2nd without the 50

Clearly he played well, but many won't admit it

Really shit game from Boyd. Mc Cartin shows more promise. KIcked 3 goals and Duck, the greatest centre half forwarsd of all time wa impressed. Give the guy a break

The umpires seem to love him.

His first goal was a result of the softest free kick of the night and they paid him a few more soft ones after that (& a 50).

No idea why he's in the ruck. He's clueless in ruck contests. If they are going to use him at least bring a third man up.

Yeah, but apart from his 18 touches and 3 goals, what did he do?

That's right - nothing!

Perhaps we will never know. Drops far to many marks and runs under a few. Got looked after tonight by the umpires not by his coach.

Ha ha if Cloke had the same game, you'd say he was back to his best!

Hawkins and Boyd are very similar. People forget how bad Hawkins was for so long after his debut.

The rucking is important for Boyd, just as it was for Hawkins. It builds his tank, improves his contested ball, ground level play, reading of the play, defensive efforts etc etc. Yeah he gets tired and then struggles up forward but if he was plonked forward all game and didn't touch it then that doesn't help him develop. He's too cumbersome and doesn't have the tank or nous to play CHF right now, so the ruck is the best option for him when he's not deep forward.

Eventually he should be able to play alongside 2 rucks, especially if the Dogs find a mobile 2nd option like a Stanley. Put a Stanley type (2nd ruck/mobile forward), Crameri (mobile half forward), Stringer (mobile goal kicker/midfielder) and Boyd as a key forward who can play deep and up the ground and you'll have a great forward line and a very good Tom Boyd.

I rate players on their influence and not some stats off a stat sheet.

He played an average game at best. No influence at all. If that's the standard then he's still grossly overpaid.

People whining about the umpires - the bloke is 201cm and 105kg, heaviliy built - he's the type of bloke who's good at drawing frees. Because he's so big and has a long wingspan, so players are more likely to infringe by chopping the arms, and just because he's big doesn't make it any less of a free kick.

Excellent game by him in a losing team.
