Wouldn't say best of his generation, but certainly the consensus no 1 pick months out, and arguably the most consensus pick for years. Whether that is because he was so good as a junior or simply because there was a significant gap to the no. 2+ players we don't know.I'm of the same opinion as Trav, the doggies did the right thing back then in going for Boyd. The deal itself was a good idea, obviously his salary was a bit over the top, but the thinking of it was sound. They needed a big key forward and Boyd was the target.
But to say that at u/18 level he was the best of his generation is just plain wrong.
Kelly is super-professional but only firmed as the no 2 pick weeks out from the draft, Bonti is going well as the no 4 pick but even on draft day the Bulldogs were considered to have "reached" for him.
Serious though was given by the Bulldogs in hitting the mini-draft by offering picks 5 & 6 the year beforehand (Stringer & Macrae) but we were believed to have been more interested in Martin than Hogan.
