It makes me laugh when a maligned unfashionable on-baller racks up massive stats (Mitchell, Rockliff, Priddis) he gets bagged to kingdom come here on Big Footy - padding their stats, cheapies, zero hurt factor, etc. People talk about how meaningless statistics are. But when a Rolls Royce champion of the game racks up similar numbers (Ablett, Dangerfield, Fyfe) people say they're the best ever and start threads about their 50 disposal game and folks reminisce about big possession games from yesteryear from Diesel, West, Couch and Featherby.

It just doesn't seem fair that Mitchell, Priddis or Rockliff can play one of their best games and cop shit from people. How about we all just STFU about stats and stop quoting them in the threads about the All Australian team & Brownlow Medal ? Fat chance, huh?

People just hate it when a midfield plodder blows a giant hole in their football ideology (where 30 touches = a great game)

And Swans fans.. Please STFU about Mitchell. Longmire didn't rate him ahead of your other highly-paid on-ballers and so he left.. You stole Franklin and Kennedy from us for nothing. So we got one back with the Mitchell trade. Get over it, FFS.

Good poll.....Bout time someone posted one with two very compatible, current-day players.

Rockliff has a few years on Mitchell, so he really should be ahead at this juncture.....Both are also stand-outs in 2 very ordinary sides ATM.

Are you directing this at me, or BigFooty in general? I wasn't trying to criticise either if that's what you are saying.

I just think they are very comparable players who play extremely similar roles.

BigFooty (and Swans fans) in general

More of a comment about what I'd read in other threads on the Main Board and Swans board

Nothing wrong with the Rockliff v Mitchell comparison. Both consistent ball-winning machines who accumulate big numbers and cop a lot of unwarranted criticism. (Mainly from the stat-watchers, I think. If people just watched them play and forgot about the stats, they would be acknowledged as good, underrated midfielders)

It was a very melty & misplaced rant....Is what it was....Did Lol.
Well I can't rant on the Swans board and I was banned from the main board a long time ago, so where else am I going to rant? :D
It's not just Big Footy. It was also the media narrative after the game.

Clowns have tried to rub Hawthorn's noses in it about S.Mitchell and J.Lewis playing well for their new clubs. (They haven't been that great, IMO. Just average..) I even see Brad Hill getting talked up as playing "career best" footy. A lot of comment about O'Meara's knee problems and the wisdom of Hawthorn giving up so much to get him. The Hawks have also been justifiably pilloried for signing Vickery.

Meanwhile nothing has been said about Tom Mitchell. He has been among our best players every week - playing a lone hand in our struggling midfield - but nobody has said a thing about him. People have been too busy putting shit on all our struggling players. He has flown under the radar all season despite being far and away the leading possession-getter in the AFL and 3rd in the comp for contested possessions.

He has clearly been the Recruit of the Year. Who has been better?

So anyways, he comes out against Collingwood and gets 50 possessions, 22 contested. If a champ such as Selwood did that we would never hear the end of it. Mitchell finally makes the headlines - for being a shitty ineffective stats accumulator.

Pfft... Righto then.:rolleyes::thumbsu:

/rant
/melt

(I've never given a f**k about about "melting". I like posting about the footy and getting things off my chest. I don't see what's wrong with that. I laugh at all the nerds on this site who try so hard to be cool. Put it this way, if you post on Big Footy, that makes you a dork. Automatically. So people should just stop the pathetic charade and just melt away. It makes for better reading. :thumbsu:)

If I was choosing I'd take Mitchell. Yes he's a bit of an accumulater and lacks the hurt factor of the very best but I reckon he's still able to have a pretty decent impact on matches.
One thing which is important is he's not nearly as slow as Rockcliff. Being a slow midfielder hurts a lot in the modern game because you are exposed defensively.
The other area he has over Rockcliff is he's way more durable - well most players are. Rockcliff has missed a lot of games.

Both do the inside work, both can rack up contested possessions, clearances and tackles. That side of things is not too different.

Rocky comfortably at this stage. Excellent on the inside, offensively and defensively, but can also function as an outlet player. Handy around the goals, which isn't something Mitchell has struggled with before this season, but he isn't as good as Rocky in the forward 50.

If I could have either of them for just one game next year - they are about equal.
I'd take Mitchell though. He's younger and he's far more durable. Plus being that little bit quicker helps defensively.

To be fair, Mitchell was copping it from Collingwood players during the game for being an accumulator well before any media people got into him.

Rocky hasn't had the chance to show if he would stand up in finals, might get that chance next year, Mitchell has shown he can.

Reckon to this point you'd give it to Rocky based on output so far but if you were adding one to your team Mitchell is going to give you more years and hasn't peaked yet so more upside
