Scandal Tom Silvagni convicted of rape

They said 7-10 is really long which suggests they think it should be less.

No it suggests they think the court wont order less which is an important distinction-they are saying what they think will happen rather than what they morally want.

Now if they said they would be stoked and go out and celebrate if he got less years then you would be correct-but as far as I can see no one said that.

The reality is sentencing is mostly very lenient these days so I dont blame anyone thinking he will only get 3 or 4 years they are just going off past decisions and statistics.
In addition the defense is already pushing the good family, good home, good rehabilitation prospects.

They’ll be pushing for some sort of non custodial sentence and frankly it wouldn’t shock me if it went that way.

Judges seem to think that any sort of circumstance is ground for lenient sentencing now. Good home, good rehabilitation prospects, no jail time, bad home and upbringing, never stood a chance, no jail time.

I hope I’m wrong.

It’s a shocking shocking look.

I get you defend your kids, but surely there is a point in time when you can no longer ? Surely that time is now.

Logically if it was an external person or acquaintance sure but I understand why parents would emotionally find it very hard to cut loose their own child. I can understand why that is a struggle for them.

I really don’t like this type of reasoning. The honest truth is the head detective was most likely always that sort of person. It was just hidden until then.

No honest, nice, salt of the earth person would have done that. He showed his true colours by trying to pervert the course of justice. He’s every bit as bad as the rapists.

Now SOS has done nothing anywhere near this. But it is disheartening to see so many happy to defend rape apologists in here.
I wonder about the actual facts of this country town thing. Quite often a victim knows their attacker, so how did she not know the cop was the father, especially in a country town where there really aren't all that many police and even fewer detectives. In serious cases, detectives are sent from a capital city. So I don't know if the OP is stretching the truth here

Even though SOS hates us now, and it would be easy to sit back and revel in the hubris, it still makes me a bit sad to see him in the current state. He's so gaunt. Guessing he hasn't been doing much sleeping or eating.

There'll be a jail term.

Wowee this thread took a weird turn, to defending pedos and COVID conspiracy nuttery.

I already thought the weird victim blaming and defense of Tom was bad enough and a sign some of the man-o-sphere and misogynists might have been showing up, but it somehow got worse.

Social media is awful right now. So much racism, victim blaming, dodgy crimes, just all round nastiness.

At least I am reading more awesome books.

I wonder if Tom has privately told them a semi-believable story where he admits 'something' happened but denies anywhere near as bad as is claimed?

Like "I got a drunk and handsy, when she said Stop I panicked, I didn't force her down or penetrate her or assault her....yes I shouldn't have touched her but she's exaggerating it to punish me!" kind of thing.

That's maybe easier for them to believe than an outright denial and claiming every single thing is fabricated out of nothing.

Police recording of phone call where he more or less admits it and asks her to 'move on' from what happened.

Phone records where he discusses plans with his mate (who she had consensual relations with) to get his Uber receipt (he'd left earlier) and doctor it so it looked like he'd left later (thereby supporting the story it was "the mate" with her again.

Dunno about you, but that's all a bit weird if he just had a berocca and went to bed after a few shandies
Looks like there is more evidence that a standard sexual assualt case which is good - much more likely that a jury came to a correct conclusion.

If he had of sit tight and did absolutely nothing with a top notch lawyer he may well have got off.

You obviously don't understand facts. Perhaps widen your news watching from ABC & left wing mainstream media. Fact: 7 High Court justices said the case against Cardinal Pell was not only wrong but utterly implausible. 7-0. Most times cases brought before High Court are split decisions. 5-2, 4-3 but very rarely all 7 judges concurring. If Vic Judicial system, Police & corrupt Govt. got this so horribly wrong what other lies did they push in regards to Cardinal Pells handling of sexual abuse cases when he was Archbishop of Melbourne?
I think we've found Tony Abbott's account.

Gtfoh

True enough, it's weird to think BigFooty is probably one of the more reasonable places, and we still get a few weird cats around here.

I was on the jury of a sexual assault case and it was basically her word against his as there were no other witnesses or any other evidence to incriminate him. It wasn't possible to prove he was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt so we gave a not guilty verdict.

It seems like there was more evidence in this case with the doctored uber receipt, the phone call etc that enabled a guilty verdict.

It's an obvious case of rape with tonnes of evidence and they should have just gone into damage control, pleaded guilty, apologised and made amends

Instead they've gone the scorched earth route, sent themselves broke and blown up their careers in the process

Crazy stuff

I’m not defending him, i’m saying until you’ve lived it, you can have no idea if you would react differently.

Were the Argentinian soccer players in the Andes plane crash always cannibals who were just showing their true colours? Most who heard of this story quickly dismiss they would have done the same - but in reality the vast majority who actually faced the situation did something they otherwise would have deemed unthinkable.
