9th never did Richmond much good. Playing in finals is the best type of experience that young players can get.

Ok finals scenario, can the pies win the flag from outside top 4.History says NO .
but sooner rather than later someone has to win it from outside the top 4.
Are we good enough this year.Reallistically with the uneven ness of the playing group, injuries and game time with all the team the answer is No not this year.
We have to have a mighty 5-9 weeks of footy and hit our peak fullsteam heading into finals.
No I don't think so.
Our playing group is too uneven remember we have a core group of over 100 games and a young group of 20 plus gamers, the mix is not right.

But finals experience can do the team well ,a taste of what is ahead of us.
If we finish 6-8 ,we may win 1 final but we will get smashed out.
We will still get a top 10-12 pick anyway which has to be used on darcy moore.
If we trade off a player or two we could do a three way swap for a higher pick.

Buckley has 1 more year to get things right if not we should get Bomber Thompson once hird takes over Essendon cos bomber will leave.
Some say he may be headed to Melbourne but if bicks cant get it right im afraid someone else will be given a shot to

No way will Collingwood tank and nor should they. Despite recent performances, we may not be a favourite to win the flag - but our chances are certainly not as grim to say that we shouldn't even bother giving it a go. We've made finals consecutively for the past 8 years so that says it all.

If we absolutely smash Adelaide this week, watch all the fans change their tune and talk about how we might not be as far off as we thought we'd be.

How do you get the number 1 draft pick by finishing 9th? you mean by a trade?

It's a hypothetical. Instead of 18th getting first pick, 9th does. But it doesn't work in your case.

So I'll pose a different question. You get to play finals from 5th - 8th position OR you get Darcy Moore but don't play finals. So if you finish 5th-8th, you no longer get him.

Which would you choose?

Finishing 7th versus 9th or tenth will make zero difference to our drafting in all liklihood. We will be forced to use our first pick on Moore, and the chances of being gazumped by a couple of places in the second round are remote. I dont really rate some weird premise in which you finish 9th and get first pick. It doesnt exist anyhow now, and even on some lottery system, its unlikley.

You can never get too many finals into young players. It is the experience that is worth gold.

More than that, I want us to show we believe and can ****ing well fight. We are not the English cricket team.

So, while missing finals would be unsurprising, I want us to make it, because that will say more about who we are than any miniscule to nonexistent benefit in drafting or draw from going lower.

Sorry to intrude, but I'm curious to get your opinion:

Which would you prefer this year:

1) To play finals from 7th or 8th position
2) Finish 9th, not play finals and secure the number 1 draft pick?

In other words, you can play finals or tank for 9th position where you'd pick up the number 1 draft pick.

Depends on the year.

But I'd prefer in the most part making the 8 as opposed to finishing 9th even in the unusual world pick 1 was awarded to the team finishing 9th. Finals experience is valuable for the growth and motivation of your playing group and making it builds the habit of sticking around in there - we've seen it with Sydney continue to stick around in the top 8 along with Collingwood and Geelong. Not making the finals, is an endless spiral in the most part of continuing not to make the finals.

The other consideration is how rare it is for pick 1 to be the best player in the draft. It's usually a very good player but almost never a franchise changer.

Darcy...Winning flags is the be all and end all as far as I'm concerned. When you know you can't win a flag it becomes a question of what you need to do to win one in the future.

Well that would not Happen so that is Kind of Redundant

Definitely finals, that should be the aim of everyone unless you are legitimately in a rebuilding process. The day I see this club tank is the day I stop supporting, hopefully that never comes about.

We Tanked in 2005 and I was happy with that

Finish 5th because hypothetically we can win the Grand Final from there. ;)
