On the overall point, yes total football is something I cottoned onto a while ago and it's a philosophy that I like, while remaining skeptical of whether it can be implemented. But aren't you as a Bulldog supporter sick of turning young forwards into backs (I am), as a club we panic too much and don't let players develop. McCartney doesn't seem like the panic type so hopefully this changes. I'm a big advocate of patience when it comes to Jones.

Well said. I think Jones will "repay the faith" in spades. Still a pup in big fella terms and has been on a hiding to nothing with both having to take the best defender coupled with shithouse delivery until mid-last season.

His marking strength has been proven - if he can get it consistent - he will be a weapon.

Crameri coming in and an increasing presence from Stringer will benefit him greatly, as would a continued output from Grant and Dickson.

One very unrpredictable forward line we are assembling, which will only get better with a) better delivery, and, b) continuity.

Every player will play wherever they are needed. Jones has had brief stints down back and playing behind the ball. If we think there are better forward prospects, or better match-ups, or better forward structures at any time that don't include Jones, then Liam had better be able to play down back or he'll be racking up a lot of VFL games.

Jones is certainly someone who could play CHB, or maybe even full-back if needed.

I'd like to see us persevere with Jones as a forward but if we need a key back and Liam is not very effective as a forward at the time, I don't see why he shouldn't play down back for as long as needed.

The coach has faith that Redpath can play AFL football. That's good enough for me at present.

Why? How would Jones be any good as a backman? Some of the constant criticisms of him are him misjudging the flight of the ball, and a lot of the marks he goes for are make or break marks. Translate that to a backman and I'd be flinching every single time it goes into him. I don't think he's suited at all as a KPD.

On Jones, I've always thought it's CHF or bust for him. Others have seen possibilities for him in defence but he's never struck me as someone I'd like to see in defence when the ball is raining in. He may surprise me, and being able to play forward and back (versatility) is a worthy attribute but he hasn't appeared to me to have the necessary composure and judgement to be safe down back. I don't see it happening in Jones' case but I do in others, notably Roughy and Fletcher.

It may pan out as you suggest and he gets a go down there. Where I could see that Roughy might work out in defence, I can't see it with Jones but we would at least know.
I think you may be right about looking at recruiting a tall forward next year. What will be interesting is whether they recruit with the emphasis on the present (2015 - 17) or the future (2018+), or conceivably both in Patton (though I'm not a fan as yet). We should get an idea through the year. The apparent depth we now have in other areas, particularly midfield, should see us with a few extra cards to play if want to pursue a Patton type path.

Roughy has all the ingredients to be a fantastic defender bar one thing, pace or closing speed and eventually I think he'll be repositioned, therefore the need for a classy tall defender. It's not a common view, but I believe his best position will be ruck who can rest forward and kick goals. He needs a few more kilos and a couple of years to get there but I'd have him on the park somewhere every game in the meantime. What he could offer around the ground in terms of skill, vision and composure (especially in general play) is something few other ruckman will be able to match. Surrounded and complemented by the skill that we're amassing in midfield, it's my preferred scenario.

I think Roughy averaged about 9 one percenters per match. He's definitely got ability as a key defender and I think he had a pretty good year down back. All defenders get shown up from time to time. His limitations are sometimes overstated on this forum, in my opinion.

I do this his closing speed is abysmal as well. He is often 2-3 paces behind a forward.

IMO he will curb the influences of gorilla's quite well but with the way the game is going KPF with speed are almost a lock at all clubs.
