How about we have a team with a raft of top draft picks and a recruiter who has done a brilliant job uncovering gold in later rounds/the rookie draft.

None of them have been screaming out about leaving because they believe in the future we're building and we've shown faith in them by not shopping them around and undermining the unity of the team.

Another year into Boyd, Libba comes back, natural improvement from McLean, Webb, Daniel, Cordy, Dale and Hamilton and we bring in 3 top 30 picks on top of that. Future.bright.
And Koby Stevens

So when can we expect the press release saying that the AFL have finished their investigation into Talia and he is completely absolved?

Should be any minute now...

+ Bulldogs fined 2016 rd 4 draft pick for bringing the game into disrepute.

I'm liking it. Talia's and Grants (potentially) salary gone, maximise Toyds salary next year within 105% cap allowance.
End of next year we'll have massive cap space to chase from a needs basis, with a reduced impact from Toyds contract plus a few retiree's added to another years development in our kids. 2017 looks great.
Enjoy the ride

That's fine Fronk, totally get that and to be honest I'm in a similar boat (although I reckon McLean ends up looking every bit like a top 10 pick). I just think the "sky is falling" crap is short sighted and ridiculous to be frank. The emotive language and abuse some are loading their opinions with is pretty hilariously hyperbolic. Cool for people to disagree with the trade and have an opinion - personally just getting sick of the abuse hurled at the club whenever they do something people don't necessarily agree with.
Agree that Mclean looks like a top 10 pick. And agree entirely that the vitriol is utterly ridiculous. Kinda like on draft night last year. Worked out OK for us.

None of which have anywhere near the quality, nor quantity of our talent....
They seem to have strengthened their list more than us so far this off season though. Both in draft position and list. I'm not unhappy with our efforts, but they've done better so far.

  • I think that the sum is that we stand to get three good players at 20, 21 and 30, whilst we were likely to only get two with picks 11, 30 and 51
  • Talia had / has little currency - although he reads the game quite well he is too slow, too small and defaults to 'safe' options with his kicking

People massively overrating Talia in here IMO. The only reason he's valuable to us is because he's a Tall defender, something we don't have a lot of. He's not a good Tall defender, hence why he had no currency.

Sorry but any 22yo KPD who beats Tex Walker has some sort of currency.

They have, sort of. It's been at a cost though. Pies have sweet FA draft picks in the first and second rounds this year and next (although the details on the Aish trade a little hazy).

Melbourne yes big tick (Bugg and two top ten picks), Carlton hell no - a bunch of GWS list cloggers and they trade out their 3rd, 4th and 5th best goalkickers from 2015.
This is after trading out their best goalkickers in recent years (Betts, Kennedy, Gartlett, etc).

agree but they are already shit and have to do something. I'd rather those GWS players than keep their current list which was going nowhere

Not fussed with trading down if the club thinks it's ok.

Watch me melt if we draft 3 pygmies with our 3 top 30 picks. :D

Getting Talia to Syd seems more of a relationship building exercise with Pickering and Syd. Good riddance to Talia whose trade value and playing ability has been massively overrated by a few here.

1. How do you know he won't be there?
2. how do we know he's any good?
You're right, I don't, but he's my pick for the player we've given up. For the record I'm happy with the swap (20, 21 and 30 looks a lit better than 11, 30 and 51) but I don't agree that we won't have missed out on someone we would have really liked.

Totally this. People on here get their heart set on a player at a certain pick with very little evidence, due to said player satisfying a few basic criteria (i.e. KPD!, rated highly by journalist!). When that doesnt happen, they get upset, without realising that they know very little.

I am very guilty of it (was spewing when we didnt get Reece Mckenzie last year....)

Yes, very glad with given up little next year. All reports say it's a very strong draft.

Assuming we were only ever going to use three picks in this draft:
  • we have moved our first pick back 10 places from 11 to 21
  • but have also moved our second pick forward by 8 places from 30 to 22
  • and moved our third pick forward 21 places from 51 to 30.
So 11, 30 and 51 as opposed to 21, 22 and 30.

We obviously don't rate the players likely to be selected around 11 that much more highly than the players likely to be taken around 21.
