No they aren't.

What they are is in keeping with our strategy of bringing in a B grade role player(s) that we do most trade periods.

The very model of consistency.
And I think a B grader FB, as outlined above, allows us a bit of a defensive 'shuffle' and makes us stronger.
I'm pretty happy with Budarick, it's one of two key areas we needed to address and we got a good one.

We can prepare. My point still stands that we need someone for this premiership window. He isn't turning into a player who will shut down the leagues gorilla forwards for at least two years. And he is likely another interceptor than a lock down type. I don't see him being big bodied, lock down type that we need. And we need one whilst the current window is open, Croft won't be the answer in time.
I wouldn't rule him out developing into a Harris Andrews type. His Dad was a pretty feisty one-on-one and was built accordingly. Who knows how he'll fill out?

Agree that whatever his role, he's unlikely to be ready for at least 2 years if that's what you think our premiership window is.

My point - for the last month or three - has been that we need to start paying serious attention to our KPD stocks instead of assuming they will somehow arrive readymade on our door step. We finally started with Buss. O'Donnell did almost literally land on our doorstep! It certainly wasn't strategic list planning. And now Croft is another opportunity. If not Croft then let's get some undeveloped 18yo or a state league player in his early 20s and start developing them. We don't want to be having this conversation all the way through to 2030.

We did, before divesting at the end of 2019. We were one of the earlier Victorian clubs to do it alongside North (2008) and Collingwood (2018). A number of clubs including Richmond, Carlton, Essendon and St Kilda still have them.
Oops! Yes, yes hugely glad we don't anymore!

Why be so cryptic?

1. We won't be signing a defender?
2. We will sign someone, who will divide the fans or make us be like wtf?
3. Something else unrelated to our defender chase?
Wouldnt be surprised if it’s, Butts doesn’t want to come now because he was second choice. Alternatively it could be that JSOS would’ve come for an extra $50,000, we refused and he went to the Saints.

Ok. But We're going in circles now.

I had virtually no awareness of him until his name kept popping up on this board. I trust your judgement and hope you're right. He was clearly earmarked early and fits into our strategy of targeting a mid range type and if played as a defender he fills a need and should come across at a reasonable price.

Has that been determined yet?

Didn't C4 post that this was a done deal?

Think of the final minutes theatre of it all.

And the football world waits with bated breath for the announcement that Buku Khamis has netted us am upgrade on a third round draft selection. And then the Western Suburbs erupts with a collective...meh.

Reports at the time were that the Saints offer trumped what the Dogs and Pies had on the table by in excess of $250k.

Buckley to the Cats as an assistant.

Scott so busy with his other jobs he had to put an extra man on.

Come on crazy Bevo, sprinkle your magic dust on this fella and make him the gorilla KPD we’ve all been wanting 1760406153620.jpeg

I think the frustration is that clearly Wilkie was Plan A, it was a Hail Mary, so Butts was a kind of Plan B, another Hail Mary. So why weren't we working around the clock trying to nail Plan C and D knowing A and B would likely fail?

That's the issue here. We needed a back up, a sure thing, and seems like we didn't have one.

No offence meant to you Dogs Rule, but this has surely been done to death.

The Western Bulldogs and "Gun defenders" aren't both in a vacuum.

We can't just formulate a list and expect one of them to join.
There are so many other forces in play.
Who's to say we haven't enquired about 5 or 6 gun defenders over the last 12-18 months but have been flat out told No?

And at what point does a Plan C, D, E, F, G, ... become no better than what we have anyway?

As others have said before, Plan 'x' (if we didn't land the specific players we wanted) is to back and develop our own.

You might not agree with that, but advocating we now quickly grab May or Frost [not saying that is necessary your opinion] is neither the answer, nor any kind of long term Plan.

I just think that posters who are essentially insinuating that the Club have gotten to a dead end without even noticing (let alone trying to do something about it) are being a bit irrational (driven by frustration no doubt).

If they don't make us better they aren't coming. It's been a consistent message.
That is the Plan.

People's idea of who may or may not make us better will vary...
...just like opinions on draft night.

And sure, recruiters and CEOs get it wrong occasionally, but this idea that we're an unprofessional rabble and we're too busy admiring our own vision to attempt to improve is a bit on the nose to me.
