Here is what was written up on the BF Mock Trial - conducted 2 weeks ago

He is class and was taken at pick 3 in the trial which included some serious U18 watchers. He would not be my personal favourite as I am not seeing quite the midfield I really want. Mind you, for a GWS or another club with multiple first rounders he would be worth a punt.
Which mids are you liking for upcoming draft?

Say we got rid of Keegan and Mcinnes for 2020 we still have:

Vardy (28) - Decent player if he gets back to his 2017 and 2018 form.
Hickey (28) - Getting better each game. A better player than Vardy.
Nic Nat (29) - Could play anywhere between 1 - 17 games with the way his injury's have been going i am not banking on him playing 22-25 games for the year.
Bailey Williams ( 19) - Getting better now that he has been given some responsibility in the ruck. Can also kick goals and second for goals in the Beagles team. I would be building the mids around this bloke. Can play forward and is looking good in the ruck.

We have a few options going into 2020.

2 rucks like we have parts of the year:

Nic Nat/ Vardy
Nic Nat/ Hickey
Nic Nat/ Williams
Vardy/Williams
Vardy/Hickey
Hickey/Williams

Or we go with one ruck and have a pinch hitter in O Allen:

O Allen - Nic
O Allen - Vardy
O Allen - Hickey
O Allen - Ryan
O Allen - Williams

So we have plenty of decent options going forward where we can still develop a ruckman in Williams.

So like a number on the board, I am wanting to prioritise our midfield.

My assumption is that West Coast will have 3 good picks and Cogs/Kelly not taken.
R1 16/19
R2 22/25
R2 35/40

I want us to get 2 midfielders that will be inside and something else with the 3rd pick. Not actually worried about the mix.
Exampleof sets that would work: - Sharp, Rivers, Rantall or Cooper Stephens, Jackson, Potter

The players at the R1 range are quite varied.
Inside and balanced mids at our first 2 picks
  • Deven Robertson was my man but with his carnival, I think he goes earlier
  • Cooper Stephens has shown it all last year and returns from broken fibula so lets see how he goes, he may rise depending on his finish
  • Mitch O’Neill – showed it all in the carnival
  • Harry Shoenberg – another who fits the bill
  • Trent Rivers – he has returned from the carnival and has gone to the midfield and looks great (my Jarrod Berry call for this year)
  • Jeremy Sharp - probably more outside but I saw him attend a few stoppages in the first WAFL game of the year and he did not look out of place. This guy will divide opinions because his best is brilliant but he appears selective when he goes. If we see enough inside prospects on the board still at our first pick, then I'd be OK taking him and a inside mid with our second.
Kemp was probably not in my sight as I thought he would go earlier and I saw him initially as more utility than mid but he recently delivered as a mid. Now with an ACL, he could do a Lever and slide down. Lever was seen as a top 3 prior to his ACL and went at 14 or something. Taking a kid from interstate and they start and have a decent stint in rehab is a really tricky call. If possible, I would avoid it. That said, never say never.

On reflection, we sense we tried to get a flanker who could play midfielder with Duggan and Venables and missed out. They are good picks in some regard but failed to deliver inside mid capability. I would be concerned that Kemp might be the same.

So, as long as we get a tough nut inside mid with one of our first 2 picks, I would be happy. They should be thereabouts at our first and Sydney's second rounder so I am relaxed. If there is a run on midfielders as per draft last year in the late teens and early twenties, then we might need to pull the trigger earlier on a mid.

I liked what Monocle did with the BigFooty Trial taking Cooper Stephens, Trent Rivers, Miles Bergman then Louis Butler. But there again, he's always going to prioritise inside mids.

Does that mean you think WC won't get Kelly?

Ajang Ajang developing very nicely down at east perth. Twenty two year old , 198 cm , only played 17 wafl games. had a 20 disposals , 40 hitouts game against west perth. Is he eligible for the whatever category list?

Here's what you missed;

  • Hickey is s**t
  • Looking at Brad Ottens on a 12 month deal

I have always pushed his name forward, and wanted us to take him last year. I hope we do this time round.

Unless Ajang Ajang is a capable forward

Which i'm doubtful he is, going by his 4 goals from 14 games..

Nothing against the idea, but i don't really see the point in adding another undersized 2nd ruckman to our list.

He can get away with being 198cm and leaping over opponents in the WAFL, but being a #1 ruck at AFL level is completely different.

Hopefully he hasn’t been overlooked due to negative publicity about African gangs - some sort of Gangajang ark-up

Do not know about Kelly or Cogs. But this is the hand we currently hold and a possible crop we could haul in. Always good to know what the alternative is if the trade becomes too high priced
