Lionshine just got dlanodded.

Unsubscribing in 3 ..... 2 ..... 1 .....

It's brutally bad isn't it.

I just hope that opposition supporters don't think we are all this deluded.

We need a disclaimer at the start of the thread.

THE DELUSIONS WITHIN THIS THREAD ARE NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE VIEWS OF ALL BRISBANE LIONS SUPPORTERS AS A WHOLE

Banfield hasn't done much the last few games.

I'm thinking we might be able to use him to snare J Selwood. Admittedly we might have to throw in our 4th round pick to sweeten the deal.

Inconsistent.

We can probably get a better player with the pick we'll get for him.

So wouldn't the same logic apply to West Coast who we would be getting said pick from?

Someone brought up the prospect of trading for Kerr at the end of last year and was under the impression that we'd simply be able to chuck a later pick WCE's way as compensation. When numerous people, including myself, pointed out that it would most likely require a first-rounder at the very least, there was quite a debate over whether or not Kerr was worth such an exchange.

Good post as usual Stocka

hmmm....lets not open old wounds but I think the suggested trade was....

A player and a pick. Dalziell wants to go home...so Dalziell and second/third round pick?

It was a very good thread imo!

I am sure we both agree that he is not worth a first round pick in todays market

Will be interesting if WC try to use Kerr in a trade for Wells....

I reckon the Lions will pass on Kerr if he is available.

He can become a different player in Perth. He probably needs a fresh start to his career anyways.

Your case is getting less convincing by the second Axel.

It is now entirely contingent on the magical career saving properties of Subiaco Oval grass. It's currently working wonders on Dalziell and Oakley-Nicholls.

Hope Shermo stays personally.

He's in terrible form and whatever we'd get for him would not be reflective of what he is worth when he is up and about.

Quite a few more delistable players than Shermo on the list I feel. Sounds like he may have been carrying a nerve injury for a while too. Keep him and back him to turn it around. :thumbsu:

Draft picks are overrated.

Far out why can't people understand something so simple? We don't get to use any compensation picks that you get if you lose a player to GC as an uncontracted player until after this year or the next!

I'm so sorry sir. I bow down before you on one need and beg forgiveness.

I still don't understand Dalziell out and Raines in???

Because that was never a direct trade.

Raines for pick 44 was the trade. Dalziell doesn't factor into it.

Pretty sure this has been explained already.

It should be remembered (or realised) that Voss was keen to get Raines because he saw in him a player who could improve into career best form and thus become a valuable addition to the list.

He still might - if not,it will mean Voss was mistaken - coaches do make mistakes - if this proves to be so in time it will have cost the club virtually nothing because we gave pick 44 for Raines....still finished up with pick 47 and recruited Harwood - it's cool...no need for unnecessary remorse...there are far more important things to attend to to improve the list as it stands today.

Yeah I get that, but if Dalziell was dumped for bad disposal why bring Raines in?

^Look at TOD's post above you. Voss might have been wrong but he was right with Maguire/Staker at least.

If we're going to talk about trades can we think of realistic ideas at least?

Well disposal aside, one is a one-paced link-up midfielder with strong endurance and the other one is a speedy half back. Apples and oranges.

Regardless, Dalziell was reportedly homesick and instigated the trade.

Yes this has been done to death, but it needs to be repeated regularly. Outside of Fev all the other guys cost us a single mid 20s draft pick.

Like I said at the start of the year, if 2 of the recycled guys we got played well and 2 of them were depth players we would be well ahead.

Staker and Goose have been very good for us this year.

Voss clearly picked players at the crossroads. They were all gambles, but overall we got them well under cost.

My understanding was that Dalziell wanted to go home rather than being dumped for poor disposal.

As Old Den commented Raines is a speculative pick that cost us very, very little. His best may yet be very good, and injury has somewhat hampered his efforts this year. At worst he is delisted and we are left with Harwood who looks like a hard nut and a good prospect. Give Raines his chance.

I am amongst those who considers reasoning behind the trade fest last year sound. The best test of any decision is would you make the same choices again knowing the outcome- and I feel fairly comfortable with the trades made.

My only query at the time and still is was the big 'un- Fev - but the jury is still out on that too. It may yet prove inspired.

Mind you, I'm hoping for a quietish trade period this year. The group could do with some stability.

Edit- I've really got to press submit much sooner.

I thought the trade period last year was ok. Fev for Braddy was fine given Braddies body, Staker and Goose have been good, X I think will be ok if he can get his body right. Raines is one I never understood though. But as you say if it on cost the difference beween 45 and 47 not so bad. Harwood looks like he may be ok, sorry but I can't see Raines making a big difference to the side. Anyways thats for another thread.

I don't see Charman in our future plans and it seems that we are paying him a fair whack of cash to do yet another stint of rehab.

He would of had much greater trade value 12 months ago, but what would he be worth to a club needing a mature (albeit fragile) bigman? A second round pick? Or is that being a bit too optimistic?

I reckon Charman would have less trade value than X.Clarke did last year. Who would want to take a punt on him being able to actually get out on the park AND have to pay out his contract?

With the GC extra picks there is a possibility that someone might give us a pick at the end of the second round. More likely though is that we would take something like pick 90 for someone to take on his salary.

I am certainly not against trading as I think this is an area like drafting mature aged guys the last few years which is not exploited enough. This year though I would be a bit careful because I think if you are patient there could be a fair few players who might be available for free nws that GC might swoop in and take a few. A lot of players have been holding out and using the GC to beat up their wages. Now some of those guys have not signed but a lot have. Clubs only have so much money under the cap (except if you are a melb club and can sign a load of visy contracts) and so there is going to be a squeeze on a lot of the mid range guys because money has gone elsewhere to retain others. Other players might have priced themselves out of the market and have to go into the PSD as well. Overall I just get the feeling that this might be the year to have available cap room and be patient.

The big question is how much cap room do we have for next year? If we spent all our money last year and we can't make room than we may not be doing much trading.

Fair point Nuggo but I was thinking that there would be a fair chance that Johnstone might retire or not return and Lukey could be a retirement chance as well. Johnstone if he does come back would be on a lot less coin than he was this year. Selwood would be on a reasonable wage and I can't see him being back next year.
