12. More of a chance of selecting a player like Caddy, Smith, Polec, Lynch, Pitt

I would say that if a certain young man that goes by the name of Josh Caddy was aware of that deal, he would be hoping like hell that we agree to it.

12 would increase our chances of getting him tenfold.

How good is this kid - does he address our class/polish issue through the middle.

If that's the worst deal we get then we will be happy. Would prefer if Melb ungraded their 2 to mid 20's with the exchange of 1st. 15 from GC would be very best case.

Sounds like the draft is pretty even in the first round so an upgrade of 5 selections isn't necessarily worth as much as it would be normally.

I think the top 30 is considered to be a very strong pool of players. My guess is the club would like to increase the number of hits in this group rather than just upgrade our one pick in the pool.

Would love to see a pick in the top 30 plus upgrading our second round pick into this pool giving us 3 shots rather than just one, even if two are near the end of the pool. We snagged Bastinac and Black because we had 2 extra picks towards the end of the strong pool last year, it is usually a great position to pick up some sliders.

Anyone else reckon the club is holding out for GC's pick 15?

Depends how we rate the kids in the draft and how big of a difference between those picks. No point doing it if we rate that section of the draft very even.

Looks good to me though.

I would agree.

Brad would more than likely want a few hits in the top 30 if possible as opposed to the upgrade to 12.

12 really gives us a good look at Smedts/Harper though. Smedts is still my ideal choice.

What's the point in using our most valuable trade commodity to upgrade a pick where all the experts are saying the draft is very even between pick 4 and 20? We would be better off trying to get another pick altogether in the 20's. And couldn't this pick 32 become a bit later in the draft too if teams take all their compensation picks this year?

I think we can do better.

Pykie is the expert. I like Caddy though. Has gone at a variety of spots in the phantom drafts on the D&T board, more recently higher to the top.

Smashed the draft combine, raising his stakes. Apparently tested quicker than he's been known to be.

As a player:

Just looks like a player who can do everything. Inside and outside. Plus he supported North as a kid. Still waiting on his bumpat stats and the ability to barbeque is a must.

According to Deep Throat's twitter, that's reserved for Jarred Brennan, whereas the Lions are "holding out for a top 10 pick".

yep said he would be gutted if he didn't go to richmond

Seems to me like you'd be kind of hoping that you get drafted at all. Odd comment to make, who else thinks that would put other recruiters off slightly?

With pick 17, we are no chance of getting him, you're right FG, he was proven to be quick over the 20m sprint and agility tests.

For memory ran 2.94 over 20m twice, and won the handball test that Lloyd developed. He is very inside, but as Pykie and Brad have said we have to take the best available at our first round pick. His outside game is developing as he can kick goals, and he is very keen on working on that dimension of his game. Would be a very good get.

Cheers FG - Wow this kid is special - i reckon we do that deal to get pick 12 its a huge difference to pick 17.

I guess we really need to get some kind of look at the top 30 in order or where we think they will fall to value the strength of the picks, we know the club has already done this which is how they will value respective trade offers.

Yeah, nice opening gambit, but there should be a bit more to milk out of this just yet. It is an interesting question though, do we take this deal and draft one of Caddy/Brodie Smith and then wait till 31 for Issac Smith, or do we hold out and attemp to get a pick in the 20's and draft say a Harper/Smedts, then a Lamb/Green and then use 31 on Isaac Smith.

Tough choice.

I placed Paul Daffey's 25 last night for people to look at in the Draft Thread. Pretty accurate.

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=759403&page=7
1. David Swallow (East Fremantle): Is a complete midfielder who can do it all. At the age of 17 he finished fourth in the Liston Trophy (the VFL's best-and-fairest award) and won the Suns’ B&F.

2. Harley Bennell (Peel): Is a silky midfielder with a burst of speed who reads the ball off packs and finishes his work like a master craftsman. He moves like Daniel Wells.

3. Sam Day (Sturt): Is a key forward who takes hangers and kicks 60 metres without effort. His potential is enormous considering he’s never dedicated himself to footy.

4. Andrew Gaff (Oakleigh Chargers): Is a faultless midfielder, efficient and articulate, who increased his standing at the draft combine by ranking in the top few in endurance events. He is similar to Luke Power in a lot of ways.

5. Dyson Heppell (Gippsland Power): Is a midfielder and flanker who tested well in the endurance and clean hands categories at the draft combine. He is never rushed and yet never gets caught.

6. Jared Polec (Woodville-West Torrens): Is a smooth wingman who can break away from a pack and boot 60 metres on his left foot. He performed well at senior level in finals and plays like a better Clinton Young.

7. Josh Caddy (Northern Knights): Has jumped up the order after some sizzling performances at the draft combine on top of some great games for Vic Metro. He surprised many with his nippy sprint times.

8. Daniel Gorringe (Norwood): Is an intelligent ruckman who’s still growing and is the type of player you can build a team around.

9. Tom Lynch (Dandenong Stingrays): Is a key forward who takes strong marks, is Nick Riewoldt-like in his endurance and has really leapt up the rankings since mid-season.

10. Shaun Atley (Murray Bushrangers): Is a speedy midfielder who would help solve the Brisbane Lions’ pace problems. He has a great attitude and a Michael Voss-like determination.

11. Billie Smedts (Geelong Falcons): Tested well across all disciplines at the draft combine, runs straight and can play in any position.

12. Kieran Harper (Eastern Ranges): Is a richly-talented forward who runs to the beat of his own drum. His brilliance would complement the Demons’ hard-working young midfielders.

13. Brodie Smith (Woodville-West Torrens): Is a hard-running midfielder and flanker who breaks lines and would help provide leadership to a young group.

14. Ben Jacobs (Sandringham Dragon): Is a half-forward and half-back who performed well in the kicking test at the draft combine. He is thought to have improvement in him.

15. Pat McCarthy (Glenelg): Is a tall defender who plays more of a running role than a key-position role and would be another handy leader for a young group.

16. Scott Lycett (Port Adelaide Magpies): Is a hard-working ruckman who contests at stoppages and runs into space to provide a link. He is a known quantity at Alberton.

17. Jed Lamb (Gippsland Power): Is a small forward who would provide badly needed cheek and class to the Roos’ line-up. He put in an almost perfect performance in the kicking test at the draft combine.

18. Jack Darling (West Perth): Is a rambunctious forward who makes his presence felt and would alleviate the Blues’ pain at losing Aaron Hamill a decade ago.

19. Seb Tape (Sturt): Is a dedicated defender you could build a team around. He would complement Ben Stratton in a developing Hawks backline.

20. Cameron Guthrie (Calder Cannons): Is a strong-minded midfielder who would push Ryan Crowley out of the Dockers’ line-up. He kicked a few goals in the TAC Cup finals.

21. Luke Parker (Dandenong Stingrays): Is a midfielder whose standing dipped mid-year but returned again during the TAC Cup finals. He is a top leader and good inside and outside.

22. Tom Liberatore (Calder Cannons): Is an inside midfielder who is leaner and faster than his father Tony, but just as hungry. He is a solid father-son pick.

23. Mitch Hallahan (Dandenong Stingrays):
Is a midfielder whose boxing credentials lend an edge. He is an impressive leader and has a great work ethic. He played injured late in the TAC Cup season.

24. Pat Karnezis (Oakleigh Chargers): Is a talented half-forward with x-factor who leads forward and back. He has only just given up soccer for footy.

25. Jamie Cripps (East Fremantle): Is a sure ball-handler with endurance who has kicked goals in senior footy this season. He is from the same area as Tarkyn Lockyer.

I'd take that deal.

4-20 is even, but there they are still better players.

#12 would ensure the first major slider out of the top 10, Atley, Heppell, Polec, Smith, Lynch and Caddy are all realistic chances at that pick.

We would then have a pick 5 slots back from the proposed GC pick.

I can handle that.

Radio reports suggesting that the Hale deal will be done early tomorrow. I assume its the Melbourne deal but they didn't expand.

I want more. Upgrading 5 picks is laughable outside the top 10. I agree that I would rather get a single pick in the 20s, than this.
