I love Sauce but at the time i don't think he was a clear no 2...
There certainly was some conjecture about where he sat in the pecking order but the one thing we certainly should of been able to agree on was that he was ahead of Hampson.

And taking up cap space for a FA we could get next season or the season after.I know it's all doom and gloom on here but when were you hoping to challenge?
With a 'soft' draw courtesy of a bottom 6 finish, not sneaking into the 8 next year should be regarded as a failure. So by 2016 we'll either have a new coach, or Malthouse will be on the first year of a new 3 year contract. Higgins will be 28 by then which is still younger than when Kade Simpson won a B&F last year.
Offering a 3 year deal for the loss of no draft picks is what we're talking here.
You wouldn't want to risk PSD either and you won't win by putting a price on your head.
We may have to settle for a 35 - 45 pick and move on.
Sounds like a rumour to me. Or maybe my understanding of the word 'official' is wrong.
For all we know, said west coast fan made up the whole story.
Sorry for nitpicking.Carry on...

One day we'll laugh about turning down pick 9 from Port for Hampson.
I guess we wouldn't have Doc if we did that deal...

We turned down #9 for Hampson ??
If that was the case then seriously, our administrators should be strung up be the goolies.
Hampson cost us what .... 17 or 18 in 2006, buy low and sell high, that would have been a terrific upgrade.
The problem was that we wanted Hampson to develop into a KPF who pinch hit in the ruck, remembering that at the time we didn't have a Casboult or Henderson up there regularly. Obviously that didn't work out and it meant that he often got a gig when Sauce was left in the seconds. The few times we tried to play Jacobs, Kreuzer AND Hampson in the same game, it rarely worked out well. There certainly was some conjecture about where he sat in the pecking order but the one thing we certainly should of been able to agree on was that he was ahead of Hampson.

In hindsight, we would be better off if we had Jacobs and Kreuzer running around for us instead of Warnock and Kreuzer and the club may well have tried everything to keep Jacobs but we can't know.
seems so
But like I have been saying, from what I'm hearing, we'll lose him for nix.
Yeah true but circumstances at the time made the decision justifiable. I remember a few years ago there were regular calls for our club to stop emulating other club's game plans and start innovating ourselves. Damned if you do and damned if you don't I guess....Nice in theory but seriously, how often does that work anyway ??
Paul Salmon was a genuine ruckman who became a gun forward but he is an exception to the rule due to being extraordinarily tall for the game back then.
In a realistic world... I am wondering, what people think we should do come trade/FA month?
If Walker went packing with our 1st for a GWS gun, I think we should look at bringing in Higgins and Malceski on 3 year deals.
Big gamble. If he's on I like him. I would hope the club stick fat and offer him a hugely reduced wage and a 1 year contract. From my memory, he held us to ransom last time and requested more years and a decent paycheck. Time to repay the faith Waitey. By my calculations, he owes us about 4 years of good football...

I'm not being negative but if you genuinely think we will be near Sydney or Hawthorn in the next season or two, I don't know what to tell you. This rebuild is going to take time if we want to do it properly.
Otherwise, we can go the quick fix and acquire guys like Higgins that do nothing except rack up games in a Carlton guernsey.

Nailed it for mine.I think we are 2 years off making finals again tbh.
If we are being serious, then we need another 10 players (either from the rookie list/previously drafted/or to be drafted) in the next 2 years to be pushing hard for senior selection. Add to that the new recruits and we maybe getting somewhere.
We have the foundations of a really good team with Gibbs, Murphy, Yarran, Menzel, Henderson, Buckley, Cripps, Doc, Everitt, Thomas, Graham and Cas looking to have at least 5 years + of good football ahead of them.
Walker, Kruezer, Lucas, Robinson, Watson, Warnock and Garlett maybe used as trade bait over the next year or so. Kruezer is really the only one out of that group I would hate to lose.
I expect us to once again bring in 2-3 players that are best 22 this year and next. But improvement must come from our younger guys and that sometimes takes time.
We aren't 5 years off. I think Thursday just gone showed that. Sensible trading and not throwing away players that have 5+ years left in them to bring in a superstar along with high picks will hurt us. If its a player that has 3 years left and possibly replaceable plus a pick, then thats ok.
Luck may fall our way also. We need a bit tbh. Players may need to pick us as their preferred club and that might save us a few high picks. Boyd, Patton, Shiel and Greene i'm looking at you!
Malthouse doesn't get swayed for the sake of it nor would he bow to the suits above when it comes to footballing matters.
His plan is in place and there has been and will continue to be collateral damage along the way.
Are any premiership quality sides currently in for Higgins?Cap space shouldn't be an issue. We have a handful of senior blokes who won't be on the books in 2016, or at the very least on reduced terms.
There will be no rebuild. We were a kick away from beating last year's grand finalists last game. If you think Malthouse is going to sit idly by with a 5 year plan, you're mistaken. We'll see a newer, harder Carlton over the offseason that addresses the 10-minute brainfades that Mick has been at pains to excuse each and every press conference.
Last year we acquired 3 first round draft picks (Thomas, Everitt, Docherty). Higgins meets that criteria and would not 'do nothing except rack up games'.
I'm a big fan of Mick but if he goes down the 'quick fix' route, I'll be seriously ticked off. Getting Higgins means that we play finals at the bottom end of the 8. Do the rebuild properly and assemble a squad that will be better than an 8th placed side.

There's already a rebuild. We will lose Carazzo, Waite, Judd, Mclean, Simpson etc over the next couple of years. You want to replace them with the likes of Higgins. That doesn't help get us to a premiership.
One game against the defending premiers means squat. Zero. We could have lost every game by 1 point this season and it still wouldn't have changed where we are. Malthouse has had two off season's to sort out these brainfades and he still hasn't done it.

No doubt, not blaming that solely on Mick. But as the head coach, he should still be able to get the best out of the cattle he has. Can we say that he has this season? In all fairness to Mick, it's only been 1 preseason. No one would touch the players Ratten had signed to long term deals that weren't seen as part of our future when Mick came onboard.
