How could they, they wouldn't have telephones... the Americans new an hour before the tsunami striked but because there is know way to communicate to the countries affected they had to sit back :( Surely they could contact the countries government or something  I heard the money Bush is giving to the countries in need is as much as he spends in 5 minutes in the Iraq war

The report I read is that they contacted the indonesian authorities that the earthquake was likely to result in a tidal wave. They didn't know how big it was going to be. Where that information went from there, and who the 'authorities' actually were weren't reported.

But let's not get political here, there's another board for that.

Meaning no one has found a dead or injured animal, implying they got out before the tsunamis hit the coastlines.

Implying THEY knew.
Either that or the ABC were talking bollocks. I heard that hippos in Africa got washed 8 kms out to sea. The giraffes mustn't have had it in for them and not told them!

I hope their way of life is worth it  One satalite phone could of saved upto 60,000 lives.
I dont think some hotel clerk yelling out SOS from his phone in reception could have done much, maybe a few 100, but then again, they detected an earthquake, not a tsunami - so the tsunami watchers themselves were taken by surprise too. I think the next time i see the beach recede 50 metres i will be heading the other way now though.

Sounded to me like the tribal people detected the tsunami. I'm not blaming them but......geeez fellas, that's why you should invest in a phone or two. We call them emergencies in society, it could happen.... IT DOES HAPPEN!

If only they had some warning.... from anyone....

Just because there is an earthquake, even a big one, doesn't mean there is going to be tsunami. Just look at the earthquake nearish to tassie just the week before.

Anyway Indonesia was always going to be rooted. The tsunami would've reached the first bit of Indonesia in something under 10 minutes. In that time the earthquake itself had knocked out communications. And I'm not convinced that even if the Jakarta authorities knew for certain and had time, they would have done anything anyway. Allowing a tidal wave to wash through Aceh could be seen by Jakarta as a good opportunity to literally wash away GAM.

For countries further afield, more could certainly have been done. However tsunami warnings were played down by the Thai authorities after tourist operators had complained in the past about false alarms scaring the tourist market. In Kenya, the authorities did act, riot police cleared the beaches on a day traditionally popular for beach holidays. The result was only three dead out of 150 or so in East Africa.

And there is always the warning signs about water rapidly retreating. The only person I know who was directly involved was visiting family in Sri Lanka and at the beach at the time. He is also the tsunami specialist for the International Oceanography Commssion and as such, realised the dire portent of the water immediately and took appropriate action in the short time left.

Actually I for some reason happened to be listening to BBC World radio last night from London.... and they just happened to be interviewing the Bureau of Meteorology Manager in Perth.... all the way from London.

Apparantly there are Tsunami warning systems in the Pacific Ocean... but they are mainly there to pick up possible Tsunami activity in the pacific... but they did find that they picked up something in the Indian Ocean... they asked the guy at the Tsunami warning centre and he said that basically the reason they didnt warn India and Asian countries is simply because they had nobody there to contact.

Their only contact was the BOM in Perth and as it was in the Indian Ocean they decided to alert them first... the BOM in Perth warned some of the coastal centres in WA... and they reported that there were higher than normal tides on some off the coast of WA... but at no time did they warn anyone in any of these other countries because basically for the same reason. They don't have a contact point to contact there. They did make mention that there would not have been enough time anyway but it still makes you wonder.

I think this goes to show how lucky we are to live in a country like Australia that has the foresight and technology to organise something as simple as a contact point in case bad weather. With these other countries its a case of act after something has happened.

I heard that none had been found, at least I provided a source Jimboy.

I dont know whether it is true, that is why I stressed, 'according to the ABC.'

If u watch the clip i posted check the boats just off the shoreline, they would've been smashed to bits.
Was watching something this morning where they showed boats afloat in the background after the worst waves had hit. They were saying that boats and even jet skis could simply ride over the waves. The reporter summed up by saying that people on low lying islands had a better chance of survival by heading to sea to meet the tsunami. If you swam out though, I'd imagine you would be dragged out by the current for miles, so you would have to be on a craft of some sort.

jim boy it all depends on the type of earthquake.

the quake near tassie last week was caused by horizontal movement of the continental plates. as the plates sit ontop of each other. therefore no water displacement.

the quake near indonesia was caused by vertical movement of the plates. its like your average swimming pool with a shallow end and a deep end, if on the deep end suddenly instead of being 6ft of water the land below pushes up to only allow 5ft all that water will then spill over.

Not much of a source, where's the link? I heard mine through the BBC.

Anyway it's still bollocks and the ABC should have known better, if indeed they did report it. The quickest of google searches quickly dispels that theory. For example from CNN http://www-cgi.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/12/27/quake.indonesia.reut/

"It smells so bad ... The human bodies are mixed in with dead animals like dogs, fish, cats and goats," Marine Colonel Buyung Lelana, head of an evacuation team in Lhokseumawe city on the northern coast of Aceh, told Reuters by telephone.

That's all I was asking for Jimboy. You dismissed what I posted on the grounds that you heard it, but from nowhere.

I cant provide a link because I saw it on the News, on TV.

I concede and thanks for the links.
