Selwood did not have an ACL reconstruction.
Let's compare apples with apples.
What he had was serious enough to put many teams off, to our benefit, but was NOT ACL.
Apparently neither is Troy's , you brought up selwood!
My point was that Selwood was able to go straight into the side....Yes he slipped a few places in the draft, Menzel has done 1 acl and whatever to his other knee.big difference,
I think we will be able to get a very good uninjured player with a first pick, if we can get Menzel with a later pick..fine .Lets see how the club acts shall we.

very hard to tell at the moment. i don't think he's worth our pick 12, and we proved with scott selwood that we wouldn't go that way for the sake of sentiment

and unfortunately i don't think he'll slip far enough for our second pick.

hypothetically though, if we managed a trade for caddy that involved our first rounder and compo pick for the gold coast's pick 20, then i think we're well and truly around the mark

Hard to argue with them take HarryT before him but SS would be a handy player at Geelong now.

absolutely - at the time i was ropeable that we didn't take scott selwood, and i wonder if harry would still have been available at our second pick.

but, it's all in the past, and i can't complain about getting harry with a late first round pick

I should hope not! We should all fall to our knees and thank....you know who.

I didn't bring up Selwood, and glad Troy M does not have an ACL injury. Agree, wait & see.

Would you be for going after Troy.
Would like a thorough examination, which should and does happen in AFL.
Yes, he is a Menzel, but at what stage would we go for him, what would we turn down for him?

If he suits our needs we'll go for him IMO. It all depends on who we get during trade period, and whether or not we satisfy our midfield needs there. If we do Menzel is a good chance for us. If we dont snare an inside mid or 2 during trade week, then I reckon we'll look at inside mids to draft early instead of TMenz.

Thanks for that.

I was more interested in the medical risk factor rather than the machinations of draft selection. I understand the extent to which clubs go in relation to players medical soundness. It's by no means a perfect science as our club has found out to our benefit -viz SJ and Selwood.

Don't disregard my first comment, in some codes, players are selected, THEN, some time later, the medical team get to look over the player.
What did you want me to say, I have no inside knowledge of his knees.

Settle VD. I'm not critiquing your post just separating the strict draft selection criteria from the medical soundness question. The lengths to which clubs go to in that field is well known.

I know you have some expertise in the latter that's why I value your opinion in that area.

That's pretty much how I see it too.

Well looking at today's game, there is a reason why we wouldn't look at Selwood, disposal is just not good enough.

I don't think that Selwood would seriously contemplate an attempt at returning to AFL football. I am sure that he has committed to playing VFL next year for the Cats.

Thats fair , although depending on draft combine results there are probably some inside mids to be had later in he draft. Not sure where Jessie Lonergan will go but I do like him , others like Lowie, Hrovat and Atkins might be picked up later if we need late Imids.
Ideally we pick up one or two I's in trade and then get some run at draft.

Medical Report on Troy has been released at the Draft Combine, appears that he didn't tear the ACL in his other knee as we suspected, appears to be a high grade PCL strain would love if we could get him with our R1

I hope so mate. Picking him up would mean we've satisfied our midfield requirements during trade week! Great result all round.

If we can get Caddy and Menzel in the Draft/trade takes care of the midfield for the next 7-10 years

Seems like good news re. Troy Menzel, would be very excited to get him :thumbsu:

Dan Menzel has just tweeted an amusing pic of his brother getting looked at by medical staff from different clubs- seems there is a bit of interest in him. (can't post the link/pic as I'm on my phone)

Menzel jnr is too risky with our first pick for mine. You have to keep hitting your first pick consistently or you are in big trouble ~5 years down the track.

08 - Brown
09 - Menzel
10 - Smedts and Guthrie
11 - Split first rounder into Hamling and Kersten
12 - ?

Not too many cast iron certainties there. Menzel on his second reco. 2010 tracking ok. Kersten decent first year in VFL. Have to be careful going forward.

Here is the Pic of all clubs looking at Troy's Medical Report

maybe the father son pick for Bourke was put off because of Troy.

Either way, you'd reckon we'd be out of the running to nab Troy now that the news on his knee is not as serious.

Question is would another club risk a high pick on Troy, given the side above us in the draft order require ready made players for round 1 2013

He's rated as a top 5 prospect in a gun draft. I think pick 15 would be a massive bargain. If we can get Caddy with our compo and perhaps a Gysberts that gives us a couple of ready made guys and we don't have the pressure that he needs to step straight in to the first 22. We can afford to put time and effort in to getting his body right since we know we've got plenty of blokes who deserve a chance at AFL level.
