This is the frustrating part:

The homeowner, who was not the Rumour File caller, did not want to speak publicly about the incident but confirmed there had been an incident.

She claimed she had been compensated by the players and said the incident was closed from her perspective.

Case closed. Players regret acting like dicks and have compensated the homeowner, who does not want to take the matter further. Now the media are dredging up an old, finished story because why not take an opportunity to drag more footballers' names through the mud?

You say "paying people off" like it's some dodgy act that made the cops mysteriously close the case. From the way the article is written the homeowner herself was pleased enough with the response from the players that she decided not to take it any further. The act was disgusting for sure and I'm not in any way condoning it - but there's no reason for the media to get involved in a situation like this.
