I watch soccer frequently and the quality and fairness of the refs is fantastic compared to the shit we get in AFL.

Umps need to be trained overseas. that way there will be no favouritism as there wont be any umps who support or hate certain clubs. that option gets my vote.

get some south african athletes to umpire the game! or some canadians.

He actually got right in his face when he said it as well.

He did, I was at the game and it was also well reported on MMM.
The most irritating thing is that if Connors chose to give a right of reply his actions would have been seen as demonstrative and he would have had a 50 metre penalty paid against him. It should not be a battle against the umpires as well as the opposition team.
Umpires are there to officiate the game and that should be the extent of it.

Could not believe my eyes. A player gets 50m paid against him for "demonstrative behavior," this umpire is aggressive, angry and insulting towards a player. Must be disciplined.

Yeah, just saw the footage on One's 'Post Game Show' not a good look for the AFL to see an umpire berate a player, he must be disciplined.

Personally i dont think this will be swept under the carpet. Luke Darcy seemed to be totally shocked and went on about it in the live call for a good 5-10 minutes.

Watch the footy show this week as im sure you'll see the old Fossil go ape sh%t on it. He has been saying for more than just this season that the Umpires talk to the players too much and why cant they just umpire the game

What that umpire did was one of the most disrespectful things ive seen on a footy oval. If that was reversed and Dan Connors was doing that to the Umpire it would be all over the media, Connors wouldnt be playing for the next two weeks. He should not be allowed to umpire THIS season again and have to go through some sort of training learning before hes allowed back.

Yes the umpires do cop it all match im sure but they now have the power to penalise teams for ANY abusive language at all. HE NEEDS TO BE PUNISHED, made example of and ALL the umpires need to KNOW what he did was not acceptable.

You almost have to admire they way some players can 'work the system' - watch Montagna work the free against Edwards at a stoppage. He's getting tagged (Edwards is trying to retain contact), so Montagna nigles, leans, throws his body around until Edwards just makes a reflex grab, just to re-establish position - as soon as Montagna notices this, the arms go out, and he nearly collapses. He made Edwards hold him (and technically, it's a free kick).

The top players know how to put themselves in position where they are more likely to be infringed against, and get a free kick - hell, Bartlett was one of the best ever, and had a rule made specially for him (even though Darrell Baldock and Jezza used to do the same thing).

It's a slightly distasteful thing to say, but our players are going to have to learn how to do it, if we are going to be comptetive.

Just explain how you felt that Wenn actions were uncalled for and that if they want to be shown respect then they should extend the same.

Should not umpire for the rest of the year and spend some serious time in the lower leagues to give him back some humility. Obviously thinks he is top shit.

I have some faint recollection of something similar happen a few years ago with an umpire saying something to a Richmond player along similar lines, not as bad as this one however.
