Underrated Finals Moments

What about Marty Mattner's fantastic chase down on the outer wing to prevent a Hawthorn coast to coast scoring opportunity and potential lead change? You could tell Mattner was stuffed but he still willed himself for another gut busting run to put enough pressure on Birchall (who was initially free) to make sure the ball ended up out of bounds - inspirational stuff. Actually the whole game was underrated - fantastic GF and only surpassed by 1989 IMO.
Added to that he was initially all on his own in the corridor prior to that, O'Keefe didn't see him and proceeded to bomb it long turning it over. Could've dropped his head but immediately ran to close on Birchall to make the winning play. In general I think a lot of defensive acts get underrated, Dale Thomas running down Cyril, Stratton tackling Danger and Hodge smothering Ebert to name a few.

I reckon this is one of the all time great goals but in the scheme of things it meant absolutely **** all. Buddy off the outside of the boot going full tilt. Unfortunately for Hawthorn Luke Ball snapped one from a stoppage.
Now that you mention it, Bally's goal was underrated in its own right IMO. People remember the fact that Luke Ball kicked Collingwood into a GF but nowhere near enough credit is given to the goal itself.

Grabbed it straight off the pack, heavily congested area, fairly acute angle, very little time to think about it and on the opposite foot. Clutch.

2005 semi final, about a minute left, ball is dribbling out of bounds, and Steve Johnson lets it go. Luke Ablett chases the ball down, slaps it down the line in the direction of Hall and Scarlett. Scarlett wants to let it go out but Hall gets behind him and soccers towards the goalsquare. And we all know what happened from the stoppage there.

Nothing happened, my therapist assures me that nothing happened.

2012 shits all over 1989 as a whole contest.

1989 is only really worthwhile as a contest for the last quarter. Hawks were comfortably superior at football, and up by 6 goals at each change, prior to literally running out of fit players.

01 Prelim
Croads bomb from outside 50 that hits the post and Dons fans breathe a bit easier

02 GF
Buckley and Vossy's 2 long goals ( And Quartermains calls of both )
Akers snap to seal it.

Mitch Mortons two goals in two minutes in the 2012 Grand Final. Traded to the Swans for peanuts, spent the whole year in the twos despite kicking bags, and made the most of his opportunity with two Classic Mitch Morton snaps.

Swans were in the middle of a 6 goal to 0 quarter too.

This by a mile in my opinion.

The run of play was against the cats and he comes from out of nowhere to save the day. My favourite thing about this video though is that it shows he got a Handball receive 40m down the ground only seconds later.

Everything about Joel Corey is underrated and this just somes him up

The quality of the footy played in 1989 as well as the physical brutality make it for me. Don't really notice the scores throughout because it was such a compelling game.

Agree that 2012 was the best 'close all day' GF of all time.

Caleb Daniel's goal just before 3qtr time vs GWS in last year's prelim, due to the team effort that preceded it was incredible.

One of the best of our finals series last year.

what stood out to me after it was how smooth kelly was with the pickup and then to break the tackle to hand it off to scarlett, scarlett was ever so composed to get another handball out of the defense to chapman who quickly gives off to corey.

we were so damn smooth and collected that year.

(also just after scarlett handballs it someone tries to bump him and he knocks them down and then runs up and gives it to them on the ground :p)

Not a bad effort from a bloke in his first finals game in his first season. His 2nd last goal in AFL footy as well :(

He cut us to pieces that day. Thought I was looking at a future star of the comp.

Shame his body couldn't hold up to his talent.

Sam Wright intercept mark at the start of the third quarter in the 2014 Elim Final against Essendon.

Bombers were 33 points up and cruising, had the ball out and kicked to half forward where Goddard and Watson were waiting. But Wright backed himself, flew between them and we got a goal as result and the momentum utterly switched.

Those two goals by Petrie were golden.

Exquisite team goal

There were at least two in the GF where Geelong refused to concede a score. They basically tapped it out whilst lying on the ground to a team mate and away they went.

Another for me is Selwood in the 2nd, I think, against St Kilda on the hff / fp in the '09 gf. He just wills himself and bludgeons the ball forward in a period of the game when Geelong were really shaky.
