Unpopular AFL Opinions

The "coach has lost the players" reasoning, used to rationalize less than satisfactory team performances.

Sorry, but no. AFL players are professionals who get paid good money to perform at their peak, regardless of who is coaching them.

There’s also an overrating of coaches in relation to the cattle. Clarkson is (rightly) seen as one of the greatest coaches of all time. Many are suggesting he could go in and transform Carlton/Collingwood/Gold Coast into sensational teams, yet his own mob are quite hopeless at the moment.

Similarly, myself and the majority of Melbourne supporters felt our side had underachieved with Goodwin. All of a sudden we’re 11-2. Has he revolutionised the way he is coaching? It’s just as likely that the players have pulled their fingers out.

The most unpopular decision will come at the end of the season when the AFL tamper with the bump, it will either be outlawed altogether or diluted leaving an impossible version for the umpires to adjudicate? Coaching changes dramatically by 2022!

The system a coach implements might inhibit a player's development or skill. Ross Lyon as a coach. He purposely had his teams play dour, defensive football. At West Coast our players would all look like s**t if he was coaching them.

I believe that players who have been accused to have dived whilst being pushed off balance when jumping for a mark most likely haven't dived.

When you're feet are not grounded properly such as in the air or just as you are taking off it doesn't take much of a nudge to push you off centre and flailing your arms around is a natural reaction to try and correct that.

Geelong aside father son hasn’t really been a metric for success. Doggies a bit but neither were elite talents.

With non finalists picking twice, you could eliminate all compensation from free agency, all priority picks. Force finalists to pay market value for high talent kids.

In regards to academies and father sons they really just need to improve the points calculator. Have picks post 35 worth practically zero so clubs can’t trade out and get talent for cents on the dollar. Or just something saying you need to maintain a pick within a five pick range, would make live trading interesting on draft night and encourage clubs to bid where they actually rate f/s or academy prospects.

It's weird how Geelong seem to be the team everyone refers to when talking about father-son picks, but Collingwood have actually had the most father-son picks out of everyone.

Since the correct wording of the deliberate out of bounds rule is "didn't show sufficient intent to keep the ball in play", shouldn't it also be paid if an opposition player lets the ball bounce out of play when they could have just picked the ball up themselves? After all, they didn't make any attempt to keep the ball in play.

1. Bring back real footy AFL-X
2. Cut the season back so every team plays once. Then have AFL-X.
3. Bring back the old Priority Pick formula
4. Eat sh*t: NGA, Academy picks, father-son, other draft inequalities

just doing the maths on point 2, that’s 17 games, so some teams would have more home games than others?

Yeah but Collingwood didn’t become one of the greatest teams of all time on the back of three them.

The Gold Coast should reboot itself and start again with nickname, guernsey (colours are fine) logo and song. My suggestion, Gold Coast Irons with Black Sabbaths Iron Man as their team song.

Also, teams should get rid of cheer squads and replace it with all standing active bay. Best atmosphere and times are had in standing room at the G and it's a shame those supporters are not seen more on the telecast.

I like it.
Kambrook looks good, but I wouldn't be against a Russell Hobbs

We didn’t either.

we did on the back of two of them. Hawkins’ 2011 grand final effort notwithstanding he was only a small part of it.

What I find interesting is a comment made a few posts above that referred to ‘draft inequalities.’

the fact that there even IS a draft means there are inequalities before father son or academy picks or whatever.

finish last, get rewarded

2 ‘goals’ in a grand final you won be two goals is pretty significant.

Of course there are inequalities. The draft is supposed to be an equalisation measure. It’s wont be perfect but can improved a lo.

KISS mate.

Gold Coast becomes the Southport Sharkies. That way a solid club with a foundation can help right the steaming pile of turds, and Scomo gets a new AFL team. Win/win

Are you saying the songs from KISS? Cause it most definitely isn't.

Kade Simpson played 1-2 years too long at Carlton

He was still playing well last year. Lost his pace and some of his skill, but still had his nous. Unless you mean generally the CFC should have cycled out a number of older players years ago, then that's probably reasonable. We retired Daisy in 2019, but should have put a broom through the place at that point. Retired Murphy, not recruited Betts.
