Great to see Djourou back, he will still be a great CB. I can see him starting with Vermaelen for most the next season. That is a reason that i think we won't be signing an awesome CB, because (assuming Silvestre and Gallas leave) we will have Campbell as a back-up. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs another older CB as back-up, after all that would be the 'experience' Wenger was talking about.

Did he look ok? Still don't think it's safe to bet on him to solve our defensive problems.
He was pretty good, obviously a full pre-season (I dunno whether he will go to the WC with Switzerland or not) and some scratch matches will do him good, but you can definitely see the ability and he wasn't nervous either. As much as I hope we do sign some awesome player at CB, I think that Wenger signing someone like Silvestre will be more likely. He said experience, not world-class which is what people have to remember.

I think that having Campbell in the squad with Djouoru would be great as Djourou is still only 23 and has about 5 years before he hits his peak, so he could learn a great deal from Sol.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he is concerned by calls from the fans to spend big in this summer's transfer window.

Gunners supporters have urged Wenger to bring in some big-name signings after ending another season without silverware.

Wenger is wary about splashing out too much money as he does not want to put the club's financial future at risk and he believes major additions are not necessary for his young squad

"We want to improve in quality. It is not necessarily a big number of players needed and overall I believe you don't win the title when you concede 40 goals," said Wenger

Lots of money for him is like 5 mill. Hellooooooo third to fifth place.

Really like the look of Lansbury- big lad and good passing ability and he's ENGLISH I think anyway.

shit, really?

linked to Akinfeev now. So thats a link to Reina, Akinfeev, Hart, Lazio keeper (forget the name off the top of the head), Asenjo, probably more.

Reina - out of the question
Asenjo - can't get a gig for his club
Lazio Keeper - unknown for me, but heard good things
Hart - Solid, young, english and wouldn't cost a bundle
Akinfeev - cost quite a bit (15m?) but: he isn't playing in the WC (so the interest may be so-so and the value won't rise rapidly) , been at international level since about 17, played at a good club in a decent league, has experience in Europe and is at a decent age. I think if we can get him for a good deal (heck throw them Almunia, Silvestre) we should go for him

I like Joe Hart but doesn't look like City will let him go cheap. Birmingham are close to buying Foster so doesn't look like they'll loan him out either.

If Gallas leaves, we'd need another CB but a GK has become first priority now. Almunia was half-decent in 08-09 but has done his best to kill his career this season. The less said about Fabianski, the better.

ha ha no one wants silvestre and almunia mate. A whole lot of shit doesnt add up to a good player. Akinfeev would be ideal mind you.

No shit haha they are indeed duds, but maybe word hasn't spread about them. We could like make a awesome slideshow and like youtube videos of their highlights, and like offer to fix up their houses with blue carpets and gold curtain rods.

Gallas is vying for the same amount of money on his current wage standing, be interesting to see how it happens. I REALLY want to get Subotic though but it's doubtful. Even with Campbell as cover and Djorou making the step up, still need that said "experience" added in

Errm.

Set For Gunners?
Gianluigi Buffon has been tipped to leave Juventus and join Premier League side Arsenal, according to the Italian media. After nine years with the Old Lady, Buffon is ready to move to the Gunners after declaring that he would be open to a move to England.

Akinfeev wouldn't do to well in the EPL, he in only 6 ft 1 in (smaller than me!) and his down-fall has been decisions in the air which is already our problem. If we were to buy any keeper it should be Lloris, but he and Akinfeev are too young.

We have to remember that Szczesny is going to be an amazing keeper, so someone older like Buffon would be the best. And we are being linked quite heavily.

Akinfieev is a good shot blocker but I don't rate his ability at aerial balls etc.

We won't get buffon.

SWP is a good transfer if the price being quoted is true(5m.)

I've a theory ... so just go with me on this one for a moment.

Over the past few years, Wenger has been reluctant to publicly mention any Arsenal target as, more often than not, that mere link to Arsenal causes that particular player's stocks to go through the roof, in terms of opposition interest and subsequent cost.

So it seems that Arsenal are employing some sort of reverse psychology this time around. At last count, we are currently linked with about 197 different players from around Europe alone. I reckon the belief is that if rivals who have picked off our intended targets over recent years are flooded with potential 2010 Arsenal recruits via the media, they won't know which ones are the real deal and which are just red herrings.

I'd say it's just the media putting one and one together to get five.

Wenger says Arsenal have been average in defence this year

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed he intends to strengthen his defence this summer after a fifth season in a row without silverware.

"My transfer policy this summer will be to keep our strengths going forward, add one player, and add more defensive strength to our team."

Sounds about right, really. Looks like Gallas will be gone, Campbell a good one to keep around as an experienced spare - I'm sure that at 36 he realises much better than Silvestre that he isn't going to be playing first team football every week. With Silvestre also probably going, and Senderos as well, we're probably going to need to pick up a quality partner in the noew for Vermaelen, plus another young developer - unless Wenger has decided Djourou is that partner for the now.
