The interesting thing now, assuming Timber joins us and maybe another DM, is whether players 12 to 24 are a closer match to ManC 2nd eleven. Our ability to rotate without losing quality is gonna be key.

We will have some quality depth coming into the season.

  • Jesus
  • Balogun (?)
  • Trossard
  • Havertz
  • Eddie (?)

  • Nelson
  • Vieira

LCM:

  • Rice
  • Partey (?)
  • Jorginho
  • El Neny (?)
  • another signing (?)
  • Lokonga (?)

I really hope we sign Timber, another midfielder, and keep Balogun and KT.

And I hope we move on Eddie, Holding and El Neny.

The pathway now for the youth players into the first team is a lot more complicated now that Arsenal are decent again and no EL to offer opportunities. Much different to when Saka, Nelson, Willock and ESR were breaking through. It likely means Patino and Balogun seek opportunities elsewhere however retaining Nwaneri is a good outcome for the club. Seems an excellent long term prospect from what I keep hearing.

It's actually amazing. Usually we wait until the last minute.

That’s a little unfair. Vieira and Jesus were done at the start of July last year, Zinchenko a couple of weeks later.

The difference is Arsenal are now a driver in the market. In the previous few years we have been often depedent on other big moves to start the dominos falling before we could move. For example we couldn’t do the Ozil transfer until the Bale deal occurred. Rice is a huge domino this year, and will drive a lot of other moves I’d imagine.

I think Elneny stays - he's a solid depth option and we can't afford to lose Partey, Xhaka, and Lokonga hasn't progressed as we hoped. I'm not sure on if Vieira is developing as we hope although another season under the belt may have helped. ESR is injury prone still and he usually played as a 10 or W so not sure what he will be like as an 8 or 6.

No issue with elneny staying quality backup and does his job professionally and cheap.

It's always a fun time of year when you start playing with best 11s and formations. I struck a line through everyone with a question mark and assumed Timber was signed and Tierney was kept. Squad of 24, 22 if we remove goalkeepers Hein and Okonkwo and our squad looks so much better. Quality first team with quality backups. Nketiah and Viera are the two players that need to show more. And I'm not sure Lavia is an absolute necessity, although I'd take him in a heartbeat.

Seems to be just timing for Rice and Timber. More noise around Partey leaving, so we will need another central midfielder. Squad looking very good, still a bit concerned with strikers, don't want to be in a position where Eddie is backup again.

Does feel like we're back as a destination club finally

With such a flurry of activity at this stage of the window (and hopefully Rice and Timber just awaiting finalisation during the week), I think we’ll see a few quieter weeks coming up in terms of incomings.

The focus will naturally turn to the outgoings. A fair bit of work to do in facilitating player sales/loans etc. The likes of Pepe are due back to report for pre season training. Nelson’s contract officially expired two days ago so there’s a few bits and pieces to attend to.

I think anymore purchases are now very much contingent on outgoings first. ie Lavia, can only see that happening if Partey is sold. Perhaps Xhaka’s expected departure is also announced during the week.

Will Arteta follow Pep's 3-2-4-1, or just work variations on the 4-3-3? People talk about the inverted full-backs, but Guardiola had to come up with a system that worked with the best striker in the world. I think the 4-3-3 is still our best formation.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a version of this. If Havertz is genuinely the Xhaka replacement, I could see a two man pivot behind the front 5 - maybe Zinchenko beside Rice is a more standard midfield role, with the flexibility to drop to left back if there is a need to go to a back four in game.
