Another patehtic/one-sided women's final at the moment. How exciting
cant believe zvonareva beat wozniacki, wozniacki must of played absolutely shocking because she really should have been in the final here. Stosur would be kicking herself knowing she probably should have beat kim but she would also have gained alot of confidence knowing she can beat the best in the world if 1 or 2 things get fixed up.

Epic win for Djokovic.:thumbsu:

He finally gets revenge for the 2007 final loss but now the big one. If he can recover physically in time then he should prove a match for Nadal I feel and in the form he is in, another upset is possible.

Vamos Rafa. Win all 4 slams and show everyone that they shouldn't just say Federer is the greatest of all time. Don't think Rafa is but always want him to win because apart from being my fav player, it makes people less likely to just base everything on statistics.
Djokovic stayed agressive and got the win. This time it was a bit different because Fed was winning but Federer never takes the match on when it gets close in slams. Just waits for his opponent to choke under the pressure (does a great job of defending and putting it in awkward spots though). To be the best of all time you need to beat champions and I just dont think Federer had anyone to beat during his dominance. Beat Rafa a couple of times as a young clay court specialist on grass but other than that not enough to be the best of all time in my humble opinion.

Hopefully the final will be close and worth getting up for.

sure, but he is set to lose his top 4 spot next year.He should retire before it gets embarassing.

I don't understand the point of it being embrassing, he's still has made 2 quarters and a semi this year along with the AO title, he can contiune for however long he wants. He doesn't have that many points to defend to the end of the year so as long as he plays Shanghai and does decently and then decently in Paris and London he should gain points before AO next year limiting the damage somewhat.

I'm sorry I didn't realise that women's tennis was significant.

****ing Djokovic actually grew some balls, well done, good to see him fulfilling his potential. Hope he continues it into 2011 because him and Nadal are the best players of their generation in my opinion (86/87/88).

I actually agree with TP about Federer retiring soon. It was scary how bad he was in the 2nd and 4th sets. If those sets start turning into entire matches, it really will start to get embarrassing for the great man. It's a shame Djokovic couldn't get it done in straight sets (like he deserved) because it's almost certainly ruined his chances for the final tomorrow.

Congrats to Clijsters becoming the first woman to win three consecutive US Open titles (where she competed) since Chris Evert (1975-78).

Dear WTA,

Just wondering if it's possible to have an entertaining Grand Slam singles final that doesn't involve one of the Williams sisters.

Yours sincerely,

spud_jjj

Seriously though, Zvonerava was insipid this morning. Mentally weak and not up to it (although she's not alone there). The garbage she dished up would've struggled to get her past a 2nd round match.

Clijsters v Wozniacki would've been a better final.

Yours Sincer

Fed-error still relys on his opponents cracking which usually happens and doesn't dictate the tempo anymore on the big points. Del Potro, Nadal and Djokovic attack him and force him to commit unforced errors or they hit clean winners. Murray could learn a thing or two from them.

Fed's second serve is becoming very vulnerable against the good returners and he is relying too much on his 1st serve. His decline is becoming quite noticeable now but that is to be expected. Djokovic is a greater threat to Nadal I feel as Fed probably would of lost in straight sets to him.

The last 15 US Open Women's finals have been won in straight sets, and only one of those 30 sets was a tiebreaker.

In fact, only 2 of the last 21 Women's finals have gone to a 3rd set.

The AO 2010 women's final was probably the most decent GC women's final of the last 3 years I reckon. I was really surprised to hear Zvonareva got smashed, especially considering Clijsters was lucky to be there, apparently Venus ****ed up in the SF, and we all know how Stosur absolutely bombed. I will never ever buy tickets to a women's GS final, and I've noticed the AO women's final hasn't sold out before hand the last couple of years. Unless it was an Aussie thrashing someone, I would be utterly pissed off. The best women's matches are around round 4/QF time. I don't understand why one of them always has to collapse. It's bullshit, HTFU.

You dnt win 9 of 12 slams over 3yrs by being defensive or by winning 16 out of 21 grand slam finals.

I'm sure you already know what I'm going to post but anyway...

What he means is that Federer wons those slams generally against lesser opponents attacking-wise (apart from safin who was a mental land mine). When he faces someone that brings it to him, he goes defensive and is too stubborn to change it up. This may be because he has too much pride, or because he simply does not have the ability. Either way, it's not working for him and he'll need to make some significant tweaks in order to win slams in 2011. He can do it, the question is will he?

You guys may want to chime in over at the Society, Religion and Politics board:

Federer - the epitome of the sore loser?

Maybe there's a tennis forum, but I thought it would be interesting here given the all-encompassing fame of this bloke.

Is it just me, or does he never give credit to an opponent when he loses? He always talks about the mistakes he made, the effort he put in...Djokovic beats him today and he can't even say "Well, Novak just played a great game."

I think he's a poor role model.

I know what he means I just dont agree with it PK.

I do agree about Feds being stubborn and I do think he needs to make an adjustment if we wants keep up with the top 5. I think he should up his racquet head size frm a 95 to a 98 as most players on the tour are doing. Sampras has been quoted as saying that had he done this in the later staged of his career he wld have won more slams.

currently he uses a 90 sq inch frame not a 95 as you stated

and no, i don't think he would benefit from switching to a larger frame. His problems are not his frame.

As he grows older, his footwork begins to decline. Hes lost his mental game a bit, shot selection as been poor. 1st serve percentage today was just terrible. Also, he made 60+ unforced errors today

really, it depends on which federer turns up to play. The fed that demolished soderling in the QF was a totally different fed that turned up today at the SF.

Djokovic should have won easily. When you look at federers stats today (1st serve 53%, 66 unforced errors), and then realise he was 1 point away from winning the match, you have to think that the "real" fed would of swept aside djokovic.

It really depends on which Fed turns up. Focused, fit, Fed will beat almost anyone on any given day, particularly on the USO surface which is arguably his best surface now. However, hes not getting any younger, and sustaining his absolute best for long periods is harder for him now. We've seen glimpses (AO 10 final), but he has not sustained that level since.

Unfortunately, the motivation for Federer to dominate may not be there for him anymore. Lets face it, hes won 16 slams, and he is a father now. All the best for Federer in the future :)
