Sandringham Senior Coach Andy Lovell gives his weekly VFL update following the seniors nail bitting four point loss and a good win by the reserves.

VFL Seniors
Sandringham: 4.3.27 - 5.4.34 - 11.7.73 - 13.9.87
Northern Bullants: 4.0.24 - 9.5.59 - 10.8.68 - 13.13.91

Adem Yze
Adem had 28 touches, but he didn’t use the ball all that well. He is normally a terrific kick, but he missed some goals that he would usually kick, and turned the ball over at times. He still worked pretty hard offensively, but he could have had a bigger impact if he used the ball better.

Jace Bode
Jace played a good game off half back. He beat his man, limiting him to only six touches while picking up 22 possessions for himself. He used the ball well, running and attacking the game off half back, giving us a good option through the middle of the ground. Jace played a good solid game for us.

Jeff White
Jeff was our best player on the day, picking up 22 possessions. He rucked well, and his spread and movement from stoppages was good. He kicked two good goals, and his marking around the ground was strong. He had a good impact on the game.

Michael Newton
Michael got his hands on the ball, and took seven marks and 11 one percenters. His defensive work rate was pretty good, and he led at the ball well. His work ethic after half time really lifted. In his first half, he wasn’t repeat leading, but after half time he was really good. One thing that let Michael down was his kicking, but he showed some good signs that he is rebuilding his game.

Nathan Jones
Nathan did a good job tagging Pfeiffer, and kept him to 15 possessions. He was sent back to do a job, and to play one-on-one accountable football, and fundamentally he did that. He had 14 possessions himself, but did turn the ball over at times. He didn’t have a massive impact on the game with the ball in his hands, but he did the job that was assigned to him.

John Meesen
John didn’t have one of his better days and struggled a little bit. He fumbled the ball below his knees, and dropped marks overhead. He did get a bit of the ball in the last quarter and used it all right, but he just didn’t have enough of an impact on the game. He needs to concentrate on running a lot harder, and for a big player, we need more out of him.

James Frawley
James was terrific, and played really well for us. He beat his man in the first half really well, and gave us good run and rebound off half back, finishing with 13 touches. After the main break, he went onto Cain Ackland, who had kicked six goals up to half time. He was able to keep him to one goal in the second half, which was a great effort. In one-on-one marking contests, he beat his man - overall he just played a really good game for us.

Ben Holland
Ben struggled to have an impact on the game. He didn’t get the ball in his hands all that much, because the Bullants flooded back on him. It was a good sign that he got through the game uninjured. He still did all the team related acts, but by his standards he had a quiet day.

Nathan Carroll
Nathan played at half back and probably got beaten by Ackland early. He was still really competitive but the ball use to Ackland was crisp. His work ethic was good, and he instructed and organised the back half really well. Nathan again made a really solid contribution.

VFL Reserves
Sandringham:
4.5.29 - 4.12.36 - 11.16.82 - 14.22.106
Northern Bullants: 0.4.4 - 2.7.19 - 7.8.50 - 13.11.89

Jack Grimes
Jack had an outstanding game, collecting 30 possessions off half back and in the midfield. His ball use and decision making under pressure was really good. He showed good skills overhead, and took some good strong contested marks. He is continuing to get his game time up, and played around 85%. Jack looks just about ready to play, and he will be pushing really hard for senior selection this week.

Kyle Cheney
In his first game back from injury, Kyle played at half back, and his first half was excellent. He took some really strong marks, and his ball use was good. He ran and rebounded well for us, and beat his opponent one-on-one. In the second half he ran out of legs a bit. You would expect for this to happen in his first game back, but it was a really solid return for him.

Tom McNamara
Tom was pretty steady across half back, collecting 17 possessions. He beat his man one-on-one. His press up spoils were good, and his ball use under pressure was also good. Tom's focus is still on his intensity and speed. He needs to stay involved in the game, and to work on his repeat efforts to stay in the contest. Tom is working hard on this, and it is part of his game that you will see him improve as a player.

Trent Zomer
Trent played at full back, and at times he let his man lead him up to the ball. When he was body on body he was quite competitive, and he led the reserves in one percenters. That is the reason why he is playing in the back half - to teach him the defensive side of the game. He’s got good speed, so he has to learn to use it a bit better defending his lead, but it was an encouraging performance for someone who played his first game in defence for the year.
Jake Spencer
Jake had 15 possessions, and kicked what some are calling the goal of the year. His centre bounce ruckwork was really good, because he jumped up and into his man. He showed speed to run and carry the ball. His running patterns are really improving, and his 15 possessions indicates that he is starting to learn where to run to get his hands on the ball. Fifteen possessions in a game from Jake is his best since arriving at the Club.
Isaac Weetra
Isaac’s first half was good. His work ethic was up, he attacked the ball, and he gave the first option. In the second half, he dropped away a bit. His work rate and work ethic dropped, and he drifted out of the game. Isaac’s challenge is to string four quarters of competitive football together.

  • We all know about White's form, I still think they won't play him this week.
  • Good to see Newton wasn't too bad and I think the point about rebuilding his game is very accurate.
  • The thing about being accountable is obviously why Jones was dropped, it gives an insight into Bailey, let your man off the hook and even if you've had it 26 times you will be dropped.
  • Good to see Frawley step it up, he must have known that if he played well last weekend he should be back in the seniors with Garland injured.
  • Grimes should play seniors this week, he would have to be a sneaky chance at a debut in round 22, but most likely we wont see him this year.
  • I've been reasonably impressed Zomer, Spencer, McNamara and Cheney, hopefully with us most likely to be at the scorpions next year they get to play seniors.
  • Weetra is rubbish.

Bloody hell, Grimey's coming along nicely by the sounds of things. Good to hear chip have a good game as well. Should be an in this week against the cats.

Meesen is gone.
