How do the lists work in terms of changes. Is there an upper limit on the list, can players be added as the season goes on at any time or only to replace injuries etc.?
Each team can make up to 10 list changes, primarily for off-season moves in the AFLW, and for TAC Cup Girls after they finish up with the U18 Champs.

That's interesting. It was fairly obvious that AFL clubs were offering paid positions as inducement. I hadn't even thought about clubs using payments through the VFL.

I did hear that one particular player was on $800 a game, but that's small beer to the upper quote of $30000 (I'm assuming per season).

so the VFLW has changed rules mid-season for the NT Thunder

Can only have 4 AFLW listed Adelaide based players playing, instead of 8 as they were told at the start of the season - with 4 Darwin based AFLW players on the Crows squad that made up the 12 that each team was able to field

anyone suprised?

Herald Sun Melb. 1.7.18 P.Rolfe
(Behind paywall)

The article justly celebrates Belinda Bowey, 43 y.o., who played her 350th game for St Kilda Sharks Reserves today.

Rolfe wrote "When Bowey started in 1992, the VWFL had 9 teams & 262 registered players. Today there are more than 27,400 registered female players (Community Club -my words) in Victoria, including 8300 seniors and 997 community teams".

This is interesting, as AFL Victoria reported that in 2017, there were 747 female Club teams. In 2018, therefore, this indicates there has been an approx. 33% increase in female Club teams in Victoria.
The female juggernaut continues.

This article, on the VAFAW, provides insights into the profound effects of female AF on the broader AF community.
The VAFA adult women's comp., (established 2017 with 40 teams) has overtaken the old VWFL teams (created in 1981 -dispersed in 2017 into separate geographic comps.) in playing numbers. The VAFA never thought it would achieve this so quickly.

The VAFAW is one of only 10+ female comps. in Victoria.

It raises the question of why AF organisations/officials were so tardy & shortsighted in not promoting female AF in earlier decades?
And why it was illegal for girls, when they turned 12, to play (as there were no teenage female-only comps.)?

I believe these senior AFL, WAFL, SANFL officials were simply incompetent (but this did not prevent many being paid high salaries).

Undoubtedly, there are many female examples of unrequited love, similar to Michelle Dench (who had a promising career with WNBL team Bulleen before transferring to the VWFL as a 24 y.o., & is a daughter of NMFC's former star David Dench) who said:
"I always, in a way, wished I could be a boy and play football. It was my lifelong dream".
(From "Play On", B. Lencic, Ass.Prof. R. Hess, 2016, Echo Publishing, Richmond , pg 194)

This previous failure to promote female AF is an embarrassment & an indictment on AF -& can only be "rectified" by serious resources being devoted now to female AF. The history of female AF reveals "indifference, ridicule, hostility, and limited support".(Pg 270, above)

Vescio kicked 9.2 today in the last match of the season for Carlton to overtake Hannah Mouncey and take the number 1 spot on the VFLW goalkicking leaderboard, despite missing 5 games this season due to a holiday to America.

Infact, at half time she was the sole goalscorer for Carlton and the scores were Vescio 8.2 (50) v Essendon 0.1 (1)

She had a quieter second half but still 3 goal assists, sharing the ball around.

Fulltime scores: Carlton 14.8 (92) def Essendon 2.5 (17)

At a public luncheon on 25.8 (celebrating women's football, & FFC joint partner Aust. Catholic University) at the Fitzroy FC Meeting Room, Shona MacInnes, VAFA Women's Football manager said:-

.the VAFAW expects, in 2019, 8-10 VAFA clubs to field women's team for the first time
(Some existing clubs, who already have VAFAW teams, will also add some more female teams)

.The VAFAW in 2018 has c.3000 female players in 63 teams.
(This is confusing, as it means each team, on average, has c.47 players! Are there insufficient ovals to create more teams, so every player can get a game each week?)

. Virtually every VAFA Club President has told her that introducing adult women's teams has benefited their Club enormously -more volunteers & expertise; better fund raising; a better culture; more people at Club events.

. Male VAFA player behaviour has improved, when there are many women directly involved in a Club.
"Who would have known that 21 y.o. males would be better behaved, to impress 21 y.o females at their Club" -said in a sarcastic tone!

Irony.

HeraldSun James Dowling 21.9.18

Dowling wrote (in an article about the $225,000,000 Vic. Govt. grant to make the DS direct waterfront area a 24/7, 365 day pa tourist/entertainment precinct):
"The government has also stipulated that it expects the AFL to help it grow women's teams sports across Victoria, and support indigenous and multicultural sport participation".

Due to the boom in female GR AF, there is a looming large shortage of AF ovals for playing & training; & inadequate female facilities/toilets etc. Where will these ovals be found -schools? ; & who will pay for the upgrade of facilities? Will these problems crimp the growth of female AF?

Fitzroy JFC & Fitzroy FC (snrs) both have large nos. of female jnr. & senior players. They play at the 135+ y.o. Brunswick St Oval, which has retained its Victorian-era big grandstand. They also play at Collingwood's Victoria Park, & 2 other ovals. With a combined total of c.1,000+ players (inc. Auskick), they are "bursting at the seams". The senior women's teams had to cease taking registrations in 2018, once it reached 70 players.

The State govt. has announced a probable (assuming re-election) $6,500,000 redevelopment of the Brunswick St Oval. Once again, female GR AF is "delivering" for GR AF generally. The Minister, R.Wynne, mentioned "...growing numbers of women and girls' teams at Fitzroy Football Club".

The FFC website is worth perusing -it is one of the best GR AF websites in Aust.

Port Philip Leader 16.10.18 -pg 7
The Liberals have made sport facilities (impacted by female GR AF) a State election local issue.

"Space-starved sporting clubs could be playing at Caulfield Racecourse (inside area- my words) as early as next year, after the Liberals committed $4.25 million to build ovals inside the track...ensure some facilities were built inside the track...would help growing sports clubs find space...Caulfield Bears Football Club...said the club had grown rapidly in the past five years and more grounds were needed".

The Bears JFC has 3 all-girls' teams, & 1 mixed team -another example of female AF delivering big benefits for AF.

The future of Moonnee Valley racecourse (a small racetrack in Moonee Ponds, inner NW Melb.) is also being assessed.

The bears were my old team, good for them expanding.

I'm sure labor would match this or do something similar given it has been the labor council members fighting to open the land up to the public.

A dispute is occuring between the Olinda Ferny Creek FNC (in the Dandenong Ranges, 35 km east of Melb.) & local Greenie groups. Due to increasing female players/ground overuse, they require a 2nd oval. The Dandenong Ranges are c.500 sq. kms, the vast majority of which is hilly (up to 633 mtrs) spectacular forest & vegetation- population is very small.
Despite this HUGE abundance of forest, the Hills Common Alliance are opposing plans to convert part of a passive recreation reserve (formerly the old Olinda Golf Course) into a new football & cricket oval.

Such disputes are likely to become common in the Melbourne area, & other parts of Aust. due to the shortage of ovals.
