The stats show what I saw with my eyes. We competed well enough (just about break even on contested footy and clearances) but still had 50 less possies. That says that we didn't spread well and/or we let the opposition spread too easily (hence 30+ touches to Simpson, Scotland and Gibbs).

This has been the problem for weeks now and is clearly a loss of legs combined with shithouse disposal.

I like to think we can get the job done in less possies. Don't want to be overusing it.

Not sure if you're serious kezz?

It's late. Basically I'm trying to say I like to see efficiency. % of time in possession should always be in our favour, but the number of possessions shouldn't be ridiculously high.

I think going to bed might be a good idea around about now...

Alright, this might be a long post, so sorry for the rabble.

First off, tonight's been pretty horrible in terms of goal kicking. You know it's screwed up when Rich missed 30m out and doesn't even score.

The game plan that Vossy and co. devised was working. We were getting on top in nearly all the major stats, including clearances, inside 50's, contested possessions and scores for the first half. But the one thing that was hurting us was our accuracy. If we had kicked straight for even half of the behinds, this would have been much closer. And those out on the fulls from Harwood, Hanley and Rich didn't help either.

Rich had just about his worst game for the season. Completely shut down by his opponent and could not find the footy in space at all. Learning curve for him I reckon.

Prime contributors: Redden, Merrett, Zorko, Bewick. They were everywhere in the contest, and were able to influence it very well. Bewick in particular impressed me a lot with this marking and agility around contests. Could have easily had a couple more goals to make it a 4+ haul. All in all, these players were the standouts from tonight's game.

The next tier of players who tried hard all night, and were influential in our dominance in the first half and a bit of the last would consist of the following: Lester, Black, Hanley, Adcock, Wrigley
Wrigley stood out for me because of the way he handled the pressure situations, did not panic, and looks very composed for the AFL level. Great stuff! :thumbsu: Lester was sluggish early, but settled into the game quite well as did Adcock and Black. I can't say enough about these two players, they're so pivotal in our structures and I'm glad we have them. They did a great job tonight too!

Joel Patfull: This guy deserves a paragraph of his own. The work he does week in, week out, and doesn't get recognised as much as the other players do is phenomenal. Put him to any task, and you'll get a fantastic result. Hope he can continue his good form.

The rest were either okay or pretty bad. Special mentions to Green, Brown, Lisle and Rockliff who were good in patches but never really dominated from the get-go. It was really that sort of a night when Brown misses from 30 out on a slight angle, Lisle misses from straight infront 40 metres out, and Banfield misses...
Oh wait. ;)

So all in all, I go to bed with an uneasy feeling tonight. I would definitely watch the replay again, but it will leave me hairless at the amount of opportunities we had and didn't take. Beams came on and made sure of his spot for next week, can't see anything else that he could have done. 2 goals, 4-5 contested possessions, and 9 possessions in a quarter of football.

Special mentions to Harwood, Hudson and Brown who battled hard all night but just couldn't click it.

Looking forward to next week, shouldn't have too many changes. Probably the only change would be:

IN: Maguire
OUT: Banfield (Calf)

And Beams can start with Yeo as substitute.

Yeah, just a weird night for footy. Horrible kicking, but awesome to watch the Lions try their hardest.

I think Bewick has improved a lot this year and is looking like a hard working, goal kicking HFF for the future. Patfull was fantastic. I really like Green, looking forward to him full time in the mids but no idea who will be there to crumb for us though when that inevitably happens. I've always had time for Banners but he doesn't even seem to be applying forward pressure they way he has in the past and combined with his fumbling and poor finishing he's just not looking like a forward option at all anymore. Currently a liability. Stick him in the reserves and concentrate on turning him into a wingman. Pity Lisle couldn't kick a goal, pretty good otherwise. Seemed to cover a lot of ground. Sauce looks very comfortable in defense. I'll be very disappointed if Beams doesn't get a full game next week. Rich had the poorest game I can recall from him. Polks was invisible once again. He may just be adjusting to the tempo of senior footy but Wrigley can make me a little nervous with his kicking: has improved noticeably each week he's played though. Lester is gonna be a player and ditto for Yeo. I'm just about over this season and get the feeling that sentiment is shared by quite a few of our players.

I found it really hard to give out the votes this week.

Patfull was very good - arguably our best - but he didn't change the game. Not his fault because he tended to beat whoever he was opposed to but I couldn't give him top votes.

I thought Redden was good in patches but spending time loose across half back is like footy's version of your mate's 21st - you can fill your boots for free. Redden did some really good things in tight though when he spent time on ball.

I liked Bewick's game but, as much as he was lively, he also cost us momentum with his missed shots and poor ball usage.

I really liked Green's game - early time on ball, hits the contest at 100 miles an hour and showed he was still running late. Looking very likely.

I thought Lester was excellent in patches, unsighted in others. His kicking isn't always great but he has shown this year that he can use his bulk to make space in close. He is very good below his knees and isn't afraid to give off an attacking handball. Add this to the West Coast game as showing that he can be the big bodied midfielder we currently don't have.

Harwood was desperate in defence. Still, when the opposition has Yarran and Scotland and we have Harwood and Adcock as HBFs, it is a big difference in attacking thrust provided by the half backs.

Speaking of Adcock, got demolished by Armfield. Poor game from one of our leaders. Came alive late - too late in fact. He needs to be provided that penetrating run from the beginning.

Hanley tried hard. We still don't have a match up for clever small forwards (in Golby's absence). I thought Hanley lacked some toe tonight which says to me that he's hampered by something.

Hudson is absolutely stuffed. He's not a liability but the opposition is just getting all over him as the game wears on.

I think that we tried hard and straighter kicking for goal would have put a bit more pressure on the opposition but in the end we showed that our season has run out of puff no matter the effort.

I have been a big fan of Maguire's season. I think that Patfull may join that as well. A very good player in a losing side. If we can get the mids going forward we have a sound defence and that is not a bad thing.

I look forward to the faux outrage :D at today's lose.

Haha!

I think efficiency tends to lead to more possessions. I agree with you about over-possessing but if you kick well in play, you tend not to turn the ball over which means you get more possessions.

Some of our handball chains were great. Some of them fell to bits. Our kicking is rubbish though!

Hampered by a long season in a losing team. I think it is fair to say that we are not an A grade team at this point in time but do not lack endeavour. His performance is indicative of that.
Next year is the key for how we are going development wise and we will see how he is going then. I like hime and think he will be a very good player in the future.

I think it comes back to what you said about lack of legs and poor disposal. Some times we move it out of defense really well and but it's three runners doing all the work and no other plays run hard to provide options and they eventually run into a wall of player. Other times when we do run hard and there are options we get it in the fifty and spray it. Let's hope next year the boys are fitter, run harder and use it cleaner.

I expected worse, so I'm not disappointed. Never happy with a result like that either though, but there were enough signs.

Already been said a lot, but yeah if Beams doesn't play a full game next week, there will be justified outrage. The most impressive to me tonight were Green, Harwood, Lisle, Beams (for his quarter), Bewick, Patfull and Merrett. None of them played poor games by any stretch of the imagination.

Bring on the crows at home. They're... vulnerable?

Like I said in his Roster Watch thread, a lot of people won't realise the job he does for us until we don't have him anymore. When I was 17 I decided I wanted to be like Joel Patfull, I think I made a fine choice of role model IMO.

Even when he doesn't have "great" games, he still does little things that every player should be doing. Just about EVERY time he disposes of the ball he moves to block any opposition within range from getting to the ball carrier, and does it well. His disposal efficiency is amazing. I can't count how many times I've seen him up the field ready to support and wondered "WTF is he doing up there?!" only to see him up back doing the hard yards minutes later.

And I think everyone has heard my spiel about his awesomeness before, so I'll leave it at that. Best player in the league IMO :D

Our skill level seemed to have improved enormously in our good patch in the middle of the year, suggesting that it really is all about pressure on the ball carrier. We are a skilled side, we just need to learn how to remain composed. I also think the loss of Golby has been massively underrated. He's a great user of the ball coming out of defence, and one we really could've used recently.

The positive is that all of our biggest errors are typical of a young, developing side. I don't think there's anything that should be setting off alarm bells at the moment.

Rockliff had the second lowest game time beside the two subs. Anything in it?
Possibly (although the AFL stats has Yeo with less TOG and Rich only a couple of % more).

I thought he had a pretty average game. Another one for whom Mad Monday can't come quick enough.

Do you think so? I think we have a few skilled players but, overall, I don't think we're particularly skilled.

Nothing a bit of work won't fix. Ingredients are there, the pot just needs stirring.

Okay, I'm going to bed now, I swear.

PATFULL FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D

I think Rockliff is carrying a few injuries this year. His body has taken a hammering. We just need an elite midfielder who can take the pressure off the rest of our midfielders. I can't question our effort but I can question our thought processes and our skill level.

Execution is everything. We lack the polish of 10+ other teams in this regard. But our industry is there. I'd say we are getting there.

At 3/4 time I could see a 15 goal belting coming up so I guess it's somewhat heartening that we not only held it together in the last quarter, but actually "won" it quite convincingly.

Could have been a lot closer if it hadn't been for that patch where Harwood, Rich and Bewick (in that order) had eminently gettable shots at the big sticks.....resulting in two OOB's on the full and one lousy point.

It was symptomatic of a game of lost opportunities,

Patfull was terrific, Harwood showed plenty, Yeo has huge upside and Beams was a revelation. If Toddy gets a game ahead of Beams next week (or at any time for the rest of this season), serious questions need to be asked about the selection policy at our club.

Sat where boys ran out. After the match going into the rooms the disappointment was all over their faces Rockliff and Brown gutted. Charmo looked like he was about to take someones head off!
