Voss wins battle for Brittain

By Ben Broad 10:14 AM Mon 15 September, 2008
Former Carlton coach Wayne Brittain has been appointed assistant coach at the Brisbane Lions

NEW BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has moved to dispel theories of a lack of experience in his coaching box by appointing Wayne Brittain an assistant from 2009.

Brittain, who coached Carlton in 2001 and 2002, met Voss for breakfast on Saturday and said he needed little time to be convinced of re-entering the AFL scene.

“As soon as I felt that we were on the same page and I felt that the club was heading in a good direction, it was just a formality then, just to say yes,” Brittain told SEN on Monday morning.

“Once we’d spoken for about five minutes I said ‘look whatever I can do to help you I will, whether that be a full-time role or a part-time role’, it didn’t worry me.

“He’s just a good type of person.”

Brittain’s appointment as an assistant coach comes less than a week after Voss gave club stalwart Marcus Ashcroft (club football operations manager) and Paul Hudson (forwards coach) their marching orders.

Brittain, who has been based in Brisbane for some time, will primarily be working with the Lions’ engine room, and he acknowledged his vast experience may come in handy for the first-time coach.

“It’ll be looking after the midfield sort of first-up, which is busy enough now with all the rotations and that going on, so I’ll have my hands full,” he said.

“But I suppose it’s just to add a little bit of experience to the coaching panel.

“I’ve sort of been around for a little while, not just at the top level but I’ve coached for a long, long time.”

While some have questioned whether Voss – or any former player – could step straight into a senior coaching role with little experience, Brittain said the former Lions’ champion and Brownlow medalist's superb playing career would hold him in good stead.

“People always say ‘He hasn’t done an apprenticeship’ but as a captain, his last three to five years of his footy career he thought like a coach,” Brittain said.

“It’s the same as Nathan Buckley at Collingwood and Craig Bradley was like that under me at Carlton.

“They thought like a coach in the last four to five years of their career, so they were actually assistant coaches while they were still playing.

“So I think he’s done that part of his role anyway and I think he’s quite ready to step in and take the role".

Brittain did not dismiss the idea of trying to persuade recently-retired Lion Nigel Lappin out of retirement.

Voss recently made a call to his former teammate and flagged the idea of a comeback, and while the champion midfielder only managed four matches in 2008 after a serious achilles injury, Brittain said the door remained ajar for Lappin.

“That’d depend on him,” Brittain said.

“He’d have to want to play and his body would have to be able to get right.

“If those two things come together, you’d only be too happy to try to help get Nigel back out on the park and hopefully, if he did that, finish his career as a gun player that he’s been.”

Well if they have a rubbish 2009 they have their scapegoat.

Brittain was no dud coach.. in fact in 2000 and 2001 under parkin when we had some pretty good years Brittain was coaching.

The injuries to Kouta and other senior players throughout 2002 didn't help him out too much.. plus the policy of topping up our list instead of breeding our own did not help him either.

We were set to fall... and fall we did.... Remember this... the supercoach of the 90's didn't do much better than brittain!!!

In fact I would have preferred Brittain to be our coach through the hellish 5 years we had pagan.. for at least we would of saved some cash and Brittain would of had the respect of the list.

and we'd be watching fev kick 99 for some other club!

At the time, the way Fev's attitude was, Brittain had every right to get rid of him...without Fev now our forward line for all we know could be better.. less one dimensional.

But don't not rate Brittain because he wanted to get rid of Fev... we've all at some stages thought Fev is the cure as much as he can be the disease.

I disagree. He is partially the reason for our demise. He really had no long-term plan, or any plan for that matter when things went pear shaped. He didn't seem to like the idea of rebuilding our list even when it was on the decline.

Parkin wasn't even at the club in 2001.

There you go.

Pagan was not with the times, had an outdated gameplan. The players didn't seem to get along well with him with the exception of a few.

It wouldn't have mattered who we had. Our poor recruiting and drafting, not to mention topping up... and lack of depth, cost us dearly. Factor in the penalties, even worse.

Well put together, agree with every comment.

David Parkin is on the record saying that he left the list in an unworkable state when he turned the reigns over to Brittain. I'd agree with that, although tactically I think he's from another era and it'll be interesting to see how he adapts.

Brittain only had 2 years. The first of which he took the team to a semi final. And he had a fair crack at bringing in young players with the 2000 draft. - Livo, Sporn, Wiggins all in the top 20. The next off-season he went down a different path with McKernan and Murphy, but we had some deficiencies to address plus we thought we were still in the hunt for a flag.

I can't blame Brittain for anything, and at least the players stuck fat and gave it everything under him. I'd take him any day of the week over Pagan.

all this discussion just goes to show how a coach's successs/failure is so heavily dependent on the list they have to work with.

Good luck to Britts. Was a very passionate bloke who gave his all. Not too many were criticising him when he led us to 13 wins in a row in 2000 or during 2001.

The bloke who the finger should be pointed at for destroying out list is D. Parkin. From 1996 to 2000 his recruiting was nothing short of a disgrace.

So disgraceful that he brought our team back into premiership contention at the turn of the millennium...

My God! Bagging Brittain after one bad season is one thing, but to bag our greatest ever coach in the modern era is taking it too far. :thumbsd:

Good luck to Britts. An experienced coach will help Vossy in the box a fair bit.

People bagging Britts for his coaching are very harsh IMO. As has been said, the list that he inherited as senior coach was literally disgusting. No coach could have got much more out of that list than what he did.

Blame the recruiters for failing to do their job properly, before you blame Brittain.

Coupla things. Mate of mine either won a competition (or was randomly drawn from the members pool) to be in the rooms before the game. He said Britts got himself so worked up he threw a footy and busted either a camera or a light fitting. He certainly seemed to have that Parkin jugular working a lot. Also, I had heard that he was too close to the players. Difficult to have much authority if you want to be a coach and a mate as well.

6 sentences, impressive.

Do an assessment of Parkin's trades and recruiting and you'll find a hell of a lot more misses than hits. Trades like the Mansfield/O'Reilly one set us back years due to it costing us good young kids. We still could have challenged in 1999-2001 without the ridiculous trading & drafting Parkin partook in.
