Although a stand out at the Suns his leadership was wanting and his willingness to play for them while carrying injury would also lower him on a list weighted on a player's match-winning ability, toughness, leadership and importance to their team.GAJ has more premierships, Brownlows, AAs, MVPs, etc etc than multiple players combined on that list so I think it’s fair to ask the question. It’s probably the biggest issue with his rankings.
Both guns, but neither would make the top 20 list of best players in the comp since 87.No arch or shwatta?
So the question is, who's the glaring omission from his list of 20?
Dunstall was amazing but the two things that hold him back in many minds are 1) was part of an amazing side (so delivery was perfect, support amazing and the team first was an option 2) He was boring in the sense he lead, marked and slotted it (everything you want from a full forward)
Lockett would probably rate higher in Carey's mind if he didn't get 500 weeks suspension and focused solely on his footy. Ablett Snr probably higher if he was more team orientated and did suddenly develop a body that looked like he was on performance enhancing gear.
And yet he has Dusty in there..The King can't condone someone that uses drugs
You missed the point totally, but I do understand your clubs failed attempt to lure Dusty still hurts. And yet he has Dusty in there..
The argument though is that Dunstall was given silver service by very skilled team mates. More so than Plugger. Plugger had to do more to earn his shots on goal, and still kicked more than anyone else. You can add to that:
1. Dunstall had 2 x ACLs, and one skull fracture that almost ended his career. That is a lot of injuries. Plugger had far less injuries.
2. Dunstall gave away, on average, 2 shots on goal per game out of unselfishness, often gimmes - all other gun forwards were selfish, Dunstall was more selfless than most average forwards.
3. Dunstall applied defensive pressure. Plugger not much.
4. Dunstall had to share the F50 and goals with other great players. Lockett had Stewy Lowe and Oloughin.
5. Many of Dunstalls games/goals were finals/grand finals.
6. Lockett got the Sydney Cricket Ground bonus = small ground, one out forward.
7. Hawthorn were very average after 1992.
8. Lockett, unlike G. Ablett, was very committed to footy. He was obsessed most of his career with beating Dunstall.
They still made finals in 93 (just lost by 15 points), 94 (drew against North but lost in OT), and 96 (lost to Swans by 6 points at SCG).You can add to that:
7. Hawthorn were very average after 1992.
Didn't he kick 11 on Neitz one night? He has said in interviews that Neitz was a tough opponent in his early days as a defender.

The velvet sledgehammer. Underrated player.Matty Lloyd unlucky to miss out

We would have been tanking.Didn't he kick 11 on Neitz one night?
Probably why he likes talking him up as a defender.Didn't he kick 11 on Neitz one night?
considering one of them played basically their whole career as a specialist small forward, the other played enough midfield to have a season where he averaged almost 30 touches, it’s probably not an entirely fair comparison.
??? There was a ton of spud service in the 80s/90s especially if you played for a poor side, idk if you got some nostalgia glasses on or what but this is quite a strange opinion to hold. Dunstall was the spearhead of a top 3 side in the history of the sport that scored far more often than any team Plugger played for, outside of a handful of guns Lockett's teammates were a bunch of potatoes and he still ended up with 1360 goal whilst missing a fair whack of his prime mainly due to suspension and some injury.I don't think "That is the argument". You can't over simplify.
But the silver service argument is valid when comparing other eras, but not players within the same era. Every forward had silver service in the 80's and 90's, including Lockett.
And Dunstall was never the one out FF like Plugger at St Kilda and Sydney. Dunstall had to compete for that service against other great forwards at Hawthorn.
If Dunstall was selfish, and he didn't give away so many goals, and he didn't have so many injuries, then he beats Lockett's goal tally record. It wasn't that much difference numerically.
Daicos won 2 Best and Fairests as a midfielder and kicked 97 in a season as a small for ward. End of story.

3. Dunstall applied defensive pressure. Plugger not much.
4. Dunstall had to share the F50 and goals with other great players. Lockett had only Stewy Lowe (Stk) and Oloughin (Syd). I see that as a disadvantage to a great goal kicker.
5. Many of Dunstalls games/goals were finals/grand finals.

Started with a list of 40 and came up with these 20 names on top. I'd like to see the other 20 names. Surprised that both Abletts are so low. Very surprised that Paul Kelly is on the list. Not surprised that he has Richo on there as I have heard him speak of Richo as a "champion" in the past, but I'm sure plenty will disagree.
The King's men: the best 20 players Wayne Carey has seen
Only three current players make the list of Wayne Carey's top 20, which is weighted on a player's match-winning ability, toughness, leadership and importance to their team.www.theage.com.au
