Where is our version of the Pavilch, Hird, Voss, Roo, Harvey ect ect?

When the game is in the balance, no one wants to step up and lead us to victory.

I was hoping by now the likes of Kelly, Corey, Enright, Ling, Moons would have stepped up to this positon but alas no go. We lacked a leader againts Melbourne and "sticky-tape" King is not really the fix.

Anyone else worried?

Look at what Mooney and Scarlett have done over the last couple of weeks and you will see they have acted like petulant little kids that are very spoilt. That sums the club up in two incidents. G Ablett will be the next captain. Hopefully next year.

p.s. did anybody else see Ablett and Ling have a heated arguement just before the end of the game when Ling seamed to blame gaz for a melbourne goal. Gaz turned around from 50 metres away ran to him and started screaming insults at him. Probably suggesting something like "you can get 30 kicks a game like Wayne Campbell, but is there any chance 1 of them will go more than 10 metres".

And Ling's one to speak???????

Geelong does lack leadership
Why is it that Gaz and Chappy allways seem to have a go and the others are hot and cold.
Lets wheel out King again and see how long he lasts.

If it's the incident I'm thinking of,I thought they were both having a crack at Kelly. Both seemed to point to where Kelly should've been.

Yes, i saw the incident. It was unclear at who was having a go at who but it was very evident that niether of the boys were happy.

Gaz, Rooke and Mooney seem to be the only guys with fire in their belly's and are really playing for the jumper and team mates. The others don't appear to get upset after a loss.

Last weekend, Dasher was chatting to a Sydney player and having a bit of a laugh after the loss. If i were Bomber, i will be furious.

People like Gardiner and Kelly.... Please, leadership, hurt, passion, pride for the jumper, etc. These words should NEVER be associated with these guys...

I have to agree, King must play or step down, Im not sure who ill would have as capt, i want someone who is passionate, and hard as nails all the time, but at the same time has to be able to communicate to the players and media, Jnr is great on the field but dosn't like the media, i would go for chapman or second Jimmy bartel, anyone else??? I did here Scarlett talk when he was suspended and he did speak well in a radio interview, so i guess his another one.

This was the big question mark over the Cats going into the season.

King fits the profile and is held in high regard but his lack of game time is seriously embarrasing. Gaz Jnr is not a leader IMO ...... Next person I can think of is Scarlo but his suspension was not well received at the club.

It's a real problem ---- when the chips are down who do we turn to ?

Mooney is not a leader as hes a mental case, good player but he loses his chops too often.

I would have thought Ling would be the man, he needs to step up to the plate. You need a guy in the guts to do the job as thats where the game can be turned around, Scarlett is the leader of the backlines but hes not like a Roo, Harvey etc.

Disagree. What matters is the captain performing week in and week out. There's no reason Scarlett could not be captain. Yes he got suspended but prior to that he hadn't missed a game in 5 years. Kind of makes him reliable. He's still our best player and as tough as anyone. We could do a lot worse.

Ling I'm losing a lot of time for. Jogs around getting rubbish possessions and is topping it off with appalling disposal. Has to improve.

Not so sure. I know he's reluctant but it could be just the tonic he needs. Often the best leaders in any setting are those who don't want the role but accept it out of necessity.

CHAPPY. Never shirks an issue, is as tough as nails, wears his heart on his sleeve and bleeds blue & white. On top of all this he's a class player.

Ablett's last 3 years has seen him rise to the upper echelon of AFL players while Chappy, although still rated by some, has not been paid the respect that he deserves.

Since 03 Ablett
73 Games: 693 Kicks, 485 Handballs - 16.1 PPG on avg
188 Marks, 269 Tackles and 103 Goals

Since 03 Chapman
72 Games: 783 Kicks, 245 Handballs - 14.3 PPG on avg
288 Marks, 223 Tackles and 100 Goals on the dot

There's not much between the two but Chappys leadership qualities win out hands down. If Kingy doesn't want it, give it to the angry ant.

Just about the first thread on this board this week not full of over-reactions and rubbish (some of which has a base, but let's keep our head people).
Mooney showed heaps of leadership ability late last year but has lost it this year. Body language in the Hawthorn game was particularly disappointing.
The Hawthorn game was a glaring example of a lack of leadership when the wheels fell off.
King is good, but he needs support. This year, Mooney, Scarlett and Ling have not provided anything in King's absence.
Jimmy Bartel might be an option - he's versatile, and can do things that lift a side, as well as being brave and hard at it.

I think in a few years Jimmy will be a great option. He has the skills and the personality to be a leader. Not sure how long til he is ready to be a leader though.
That kid will wn a brownlow medal one day though.

im glad gaz had a go at Ling....it was probably something along the lines of being a bloke that gets 31 possessions yet we still lose the game...Cousins or Goodwin get 31 possessions their team will win.

Mooney i always felt was the unofficial leader...but he keeps getting suspended so meh......Chappy for me. Bartel maybe but he tends to be too hot and cold.

oops, i thought Ling had the go at Gaz, not the other way around! Actually, Gary does have a point...does anyone know what its like to be in a team when you work harder and therefore are better then the rest of your team by far? (i'm thinking back to my u16 netball days...torture!)

Another one of these trueism's I think is overrated. Leadership has its place but really , just like great coachs, the best leader is only as good as the troops under him and his talent to lead by example.

I think Ling is a fine leader, he just lacks a key component. Talent

He has , thru sheer effort ,made himself a highly valued footballer but really he is not the player who can offensively lead us to victory.
We lack a leader with the talent of a Voss or a Judd.Someone who will step up when we against it.Hird at his best would inflict his will upon a game and change its outcome, thru skill.

In a way , this is what I was think about when I raised the "Are we good enough" question. Do we have the 2 or 3 premium players of the type Brisbane had when at their best, the type that complimented the reliable steady players.

So why dont we have one?The bare facts are you rarely get this type of player outside the top10 these days. Yes , I know Hird was 79 and other were picked late but the study of the U18 in the last 10 years has increased to the point that a club is doing well to get a solid player from late picks let alone champs. Geelong just hasnt had enough, nay any picks in the top5 top get a Deludio or a Judd or a Griffen.

disagree here if your going to have a captain, needs to be a player who plays in the middle of the ground .ling should of stepped up by now ,maybe a jimmy bartel or a jarrod rooke they seem to go in hard have passion and actully care when there side loses.

Yeah sorry mate maybe you misunderstood because I wasn't very clear.

First: Don't worry about Scarlett getting suspended that shouldn't affect anything. Roo used to always knock people out when he was younger and he even got suspended last year but he's still the best (or one of ;)) captains in the league.

Second: When i meant hes not a Roo, Harvey etc i was trying to say Scarlett isn't in the middle of the ground when the heat is on, he can't grab a quick clearance or run forward and kick a goal. Of course that doesn't mean he can't captain, he's been my favourite Cat player for a while because he's an awesome player and rarely gets beaten. Also he spanks Tredders a lot.
