It’s a very easy one.

No Geelong final at the MCG is going to get less than 40k.

Geelong have played finals (bar one) at the MCG their whole history and have been a very successful club.

The only way there will ever be another final at Geelong is if there is all four games in Melbourne.

Only easy if you don't want a fair competition.

Clearly the AFL is not interested in that with their motto being "Money over fairness"

Geelong have over 90K members. Isn't the fairest thing to allow as many of them to watch the game as possible?

Well it’s a home final, so they’re doing well which is exactly the point.

I think as a generalisation most Cats fans aren't that bothered by it, admitting that probably over the past couple of years we have played better at the MCG than at KP anyhow.

I think, from my understanding so far, is that the biggest gripe coming from Cats fans is the Friday night fixture, which for those who do travel from Geelong, is a tough ask after finishing work for the day.

Having said that, the notion of crowd size should probably be irrelevant, knowing that if any other non Melbourne team qualifies for a home final that it is played at their home ground.

Be interesting to see what happens in 2047 when Tasmania qualify for a home final.

Correct, although it's not quite as bad as when that happens against a Melbourne-based team. In that situation the "home" final becomes far easier to attend for our opposition.

We want as many people as possible to be able to attend the game. Obviously that means more ticket sales but what is wrong with that? More money into the game.

The game gets the overwhelming majority of its money from TV anyway. Best way to maximise that is by having more people watching from home. What's wrong with that? More money in the game

Geelong are not a Melbourne club. By my estimation 60% of members reside in Geelong and surrounding areas. Geelong also seems to be the club of choice for those living in rural/regional Victoria. Around 40% reside in metropolitan Melbourne. That's not taking into consideration members who live in other states, overseas or can't make it for health reasons.
So that means 0.60 * 90,000 = 54,000 members have to travel at least an hour (some as much as 2 hours) to get into Melbourne to watch their team play in the first week of finals. Probably getting back home as late as 2am on a Saturday morning.

A similar mix to 2017, when five interstate teams played finals (2 from SA, 2 from NSW, none from Queensland) and Geelong accompanied two Melbourne teams. And Adelaide-Geelong finished 1-2.

The peak was 2003 when all six non-Victorian teams played finals.
