Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

I had no idea they threw so much at him, I wonder just how much we paid to get him.

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

Great news he chose to join Sydney even though GWS chased him so hard

Suprising they were prepared to offer $1 Million for three years and still would have been forced to use one of their first three pics to select him. I didnt realize that GWS had chased him that hard. I could be wrong about needing to use a top three draft pick but i dont think he qualified for the players they could pre select as 17 year olds.

Gives insight into the value he has at the moment in regard to draft pick and we will need to use our first round selection unless alot changes between now and then.

He was eligible to be pre selected as a 17 year old for GWS, he chose to play for us!

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

in this era of compromised picks and the accepted ability of the lad from neutral observers the I think the gamble is a justified one.

Couldnt agree more, having watch him closely over the past 2 years I have to say he has the potential and poise to be anything and I just cant wait to see him in the red and the white!

This is always a horrible and almost pointless question to ask but i am going to ask it anyway. Out of all the players in the AFL what player do you think Mitchell most resembles (playing wise of course)?

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

So are we paying him 1.5million???

Anyone got any footage of this guy playing?

He wasn't eligible. Only players born between 1 Jan and 30 April were eligible to be so selected. Mitchell has a May birthday I believe.

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

Damn, can't wait to see him play. Sucks that we got dragged into a bidding war for him, kinda makes a mockery of the whole father son rule, but so happy we were able to secure his signature, if he's any bit worth the money we paid he'll be an absolute star

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

He must have a shitload of potential! I'm starting to hate GWS more and more, and it feels good!

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

Is it a cunning plan to inflate Mitchell's salary to

1) Tighten the space the Swans have in their cap; and
2) Engender feelings of discontent among the younger players at the Swans who wouldn't be on the same amount of money as Mitchell will be (all guesswork of course) thereby causing to become disgruntled and seek greener pastures at Breakfast Point.

I stand corrected:thumbsu:

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

Hope those figures quoted are not true, quite distasteful really. And reckless if right.

I seriously doubt we paid anywhere 1 million for three years and if thats the case then he has already shown loyalty to our club. If he did get an offer that big then we must seriously rate him, probably a win however you look at it.

I do find it hard to believe that the AFL, would allow GWS to offer that much lolly for a lad of 17. But then again Allan is involved, and he did a wonderful job in facilitating Fev's felicitous trade to the Loins.

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

It's put on a back ended contract since for a players first two years there are limits on how much they can earn, around $125,000. so he'll earn $250,000 in his first two years, then on the third earn $750,000.

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

If true, I'm a little disappointed with the news. I thought he chose the club out of loyalty.

Perhaps Daniher also chose Essendon for the money because we couldn't offer him enough.

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

I'm still trying to get my head around the figures in that article. Surely they can't be right?

My understanding is he showed a lot as a 16yr old in 2009, and he's played for Clairmont in WA. But I can't remember a kid getting dollars like that - even as a number 1 draft pick?

You hear about the top young players getting $300k a year. But that's usually when their contracts are renewed after being drafted. Not right off the bat having never played at the elite level? Or am I out of touch and this is the norm nowadays?

Interesting times.

The introduction of GWS means that "norms" go out the window somewhat, sure, it's alot of money to pay for an unproven youngster, but sometimes you can't put a price on quality, if that's what it took to secure him, and he does turn into the player his form suggests then it's well worth the investment. Superstars don't come up during trade week very often.

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

wow thats alot of money for a kid, good luck to him though at least he's at a great club

Re: Mitchell gets a headstart

... you know, I recall once reading something in a newspaper that later turned out to be totally unsubstantiated and a complete fabrication:eek::rolleyes:
