Three players who have been very good servants of their clubs. Which one of these three is the better player?

First thing that needs to be pointed out is Wells is the only one who gets tagged. Simpson flies under the rader because of Judd and Murphy, Stanton is just allowed to run free. Not hard to figure out why that is.

Yeah, Stanton not tagged is an absurd comment. Has been tagged since very very early in his career.

Kade has two years on Stanton, and Wells has about 15 months.

I feel that Wells was slightly better in 2011 but I'd give it to Simpson for doing it over the journey.

Not sure that's relevant when talking about guys with 160+ games, 7-8 seasons and mid 20s..

It's a close one. There is no way any one is clearly better than the other 2, or 2 clearly better than 1. If anyone claims 'daylight' 'lightyears' 'no contest' etc, lol @ you.

Wells 'definitely' had the better 2011 though. His patch of form from about round 7-round 14 was the best any of those guys have ever played. He ended up in the AA squad of 40, the top 10 of the coaches award, and won Norths B&F (not that it's relevant to Stanton & Simpson)

Wells-best 2011, but not very durable over his career, most 'x-factor' or whatever you call it
Stanton-most consistent (close with Simpson, both still have gaps between best-worst, but not as much as Wells), fittest, best accumulator
Simpson-most durable, better line breaker, highest kick:handball ratio, not sure he has the ability to be thatgood for his career.

Too close to call, but ummm Wells = 2011. I vote Wells ;)

Every Stanton thread starts with this little gem. Stanton does get tagged, every game before Watson became elite and still often above him as form dictates.

It would really only take a few minutes of research to prove this statement false, why does it keep appearing.

In regards to the thread, From Hyper's specific wording of who is the better player, it is Wells easily.

I think I will choose Stanton, but not with a lot of confidence. Wells had a very good year last year, and his best is probably the best of the 3.
Simpson is very consistent, and definitely flies under the radar a bit because of some big names around him. Does his job each week, and very rarely does he have large dips in form.

I choose Stanton, because he is consistent, as well as damaging, all with a tag. Gets a very unfair wrap around here, and in the footballing world in general, but he's a good player. Anyone would be happy to have him.

On 2011 form I would say it is Wells > Stanton > Simpson.

On career form I would say Stanton > Simpson = Wells

On past and future form I would go with Stanton > Wells > Simpson

Who is the better player? I would give that one clearly to Wells

Who has had the best career to date? That becomes a much closer go althoungh I would still lean just to Wells based on 2011.

All 3 have been unfairly criticised throughout their career which makes them a good comparison also. Agree with the OP all have been good for their club

Agree with all of this. Wells at his absolute best is slightly above Stanton and a little more above Simpson.

They are all pretty close and it's interesting to see how similar their stats for the year were.

Wouldn't be surprised for all 3 to have very years!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm glad it's not just Essendon supporters who realise how stupid that comment (Stanton doesn't get tagged) is. :thumbsu:

We did not tag him last year. We liked the ball being kicked to him. He missed easy shots at goal and turned the ball over at critical moments.

Watch the game again to see the class difference between Wells and Stanton.

In round 13 Greenwood took Stanton, Ziebell took Watson and Rawlings had 35 possies running off Jetta.

While Ziebell and Rawlings did some defensive jobs for you, if Greenwood played he pretty much tagged. However if you disagree with me and consider Greenwoods role in North to be different to what I thought then I wont argue with you as you will know better, however I do know Ling took Stanton from start to finish in our game and he is most definitely a tagger.

I'd go for Wells without hesitation. Stanton wouldn't get a game at Collingwood or Geelong's midfield and Simpson is very underrated but it's hard to put a definitive call on what role he plays. He's a good player but I consider Scotland to be Carlton's 3rd best midfielder even though he exclusively plays half-back now.

Wells is easily the most talented of this group and would seriously own in a midfield that didn't depend on his outside traits.

Simpson > Wells (more potential but less runs on the board).........> Stanton

Stanton goes to water when the pressure is on aka dream time game last year!

Clinton Jones always goes to Stanton as well, but I suppose he isn't a tagger either?

Most clubs in the past couple of years have not bothered to tag Jobe because it is harder to tag a player who is as good at clearances as Jobe, than a runner. Think about the bulldogs, who gets tagged Griffen or Boyd?

On topic I would take Simpson or Stanton, can't split them. Then Wells.

Harsh on Stanton. Saying he wouldn't get a game in Collingwoods or Geelongs midfield is a huge call.
