What does this all mean for the Libs?

It all depends on the poll results tomorrow and how much of a majoirty she has, should she win (or if there even is one should Rudd do the numbers and find that he has virtually no support and stands aside before the poll).

Being so close to an election could be a blessing in disguise if Gillard gets up as the initial high amount of public support she has might be enough to get her over the line before it sinks in...

All very interesting, not going to get much sleep tonight with already an early start tomorrow (Go Australia :))

It all depends on how much Gillard can dump on Rudd. Everyone knows Rudd is a control freak so its not beyond the realms of possibility that Gillard can blame everything on Rudd and walk away unscared.

Get ready for some double and triple backflips in the next week - mining tax dropped, new boat people policy, ETS brought forward, school buildings halted, NBN put on hold, not sure what will happen with health but they will back down on some aspect of their grand plan......cant wait.

If the wet lettuce leaf that Tony Jones is weilding tonight on AWU guy and Garrett is anything to go on this will probably be a positive for the ALP.

Pathetic effort in my opinion. In a time of high public interest and ALP turmoil he basically let the party have a 30 minute propopoganda opportunity.

Libs would obviously prefer Rudd than Gillard. Rudd is poison, Gillard will have some novelty value for a while.

The manner of how this went down, Gillard's reluctance to take on the job until forced, and the union/faction involvement is gold on a stick for the Libs however.

Rudd, once shown the door, will snipe every f**ker in sight in order to make sure the ALP can't win without him, even if they couldn't win with him.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the 28th Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott. Never thought I would see the day. Never thought Julia would be the 27th either though. How things change.

Tell me about it. Grand plans of bed time at 10am to get 6.5hrs in before the 4.25 alarm have all gone to shit. Will never sleep tonight after this!

Really, it is impossible to say.

One point I would make is that looking vaguely competent away from the glare of the leadership is very different to actually having the leadership- politics is littered with people who sounded like a good prospect at the time (the current, at the time of this post, PM for one) but ended up as a total numpty when they were given the top job.

Counterintuitive as it sounds, if I were Gillard and I got up, I would be call a press conference tomorrow, shelve, unconditionally and totally, the mining tax, and announce the election as soon as is technically possible- go to the polls whilst people are still dealing with the euphoria of getting rid of Rudd, don't give the opposition time to reorient themselves to attack her, and most importantly, get the vote done before cracks in her image start to appear.

Agreed, pissweak.

One obvious question not asked is why he (unelected bod) should play such a role.

And sack deputy PM Swan and Treasury Secretary Henry?

Rudd drew attention to that and yet Jones didn't see it as relevant to bring it up.

Gillard is going to get a beatuful rails run at tleast by the ABC by the looks. No hope for 747 in tomorrows vote.

I expect Gillard will win easy tomorrow, and that will be curtains for Abbott.

New leaders, whether in Government or Opposition, have this novelty sense about them, and get quality publicity for months, which will lead her into the election.

Labor will change their policies, and should do reasonably well at the next election.

The media will be in Gillard euphoria up until the election.

Labor have timed this beautifully.

The story is Swan will get the deputy role.

If that is the case how can they backflip on the mining tax? The libs would have a field day rolling out clips of Swan venehmently supporting it!

No way can they backflip on it with Swan as deputy and treasurer.

Definitely mixed reactions.

The spill is a gold mine, especially with the unions heavy involvement. Will allow them to portray the Govt. as a puppet for the unions.

Gillard will have a honeymoon period no doubt, but it's very different being in the spotlight as opposed to being in the shadows.

And definitely depends on whether Rudd goes quietly or takes the party down with him.

Initial bump in the polls for labour with gillard. However, her membership in the "gang of four" will be used against her. The coalition have the pr ammo to dampen her popularity. But can they shoot straight?

The abc act like a quasi-faction of the alp. The whole news organization needs a good clean up to flush out the yellow journalists. Jones is a poor journalist.

Nope, everyone just go the 'it was all Rudd, we begged him to stop' defence and hope for the best.

It is a very very weird situation for the opposition to find themselves in- they will have planned out a monster campaign against Rudd's personality and the mining tax, they would have to flip things completely on their head.

I also think a short campaign becomes an absolute must if you have Rudd hanging around out back - I reckon he would be the bitterest, most divisive absolute biggest ever cnut to deal with if he gets rolled- will basically be doing everything in his power to spoil gillard's chances of retaining government.

Tanner should be the Treasurer Unfortunately Julia will have to reward the NSW rightwing sleasebag Abbib. If she is elected tomorrow who goes to Montreal? Swan? Rudd may as well piss right off out of the parliarment straight away.

Rudd and Turnbull can have a cry on each others shoulder about how unfair the world is LOL

we want the krudd man to win as the flogger will still say his policies are better which means the aust public will vote him and the labor flogs out
so i will have my fingers and toes crossed for my man krudd:thumbsu:

Rudd played it really interestingly, didn't he.

He basically said if the the caucus vote for me they are voting for a continued fight on AGW via the ETS, keeping the mining tax, assylum seeker policy etc. If they vote for Julia it is a move to the right and backflip for all we have stood for - a vote for Abbott, so to speak.Even though she is from the left.

It was a clever move really in order to save his own skin at best, at worst, his reputation.

Intruiging how it will play out the next few days.

PS "En...ger....land"

Depends on what Gillard does. If she scrapped the Resources Tax and pins most of the failings on Rudd they got a pretty good chance of winning the next election.

She wont do either & neither should she, Julia will make adjustments to the RSPT but not to the level that will make the Billionaires club members roll around in glee.

She will also highlight all the good that the Rudd Government has done & of that there has been plenty.

She will also reinstate the ETS to where it was previously bur with a minor adjustment or two.

What does this mean to Tony & the Libs = four more years on the opposition benches.

Fairfax and the ABC gave Kirner a dream run. Big run on KY tomorrow.

One wonders if the govt has done so much good why a first term pm is about to get the flick.
