It's pretty obvious to me. He is a pothead surfer.

Freo should have two mascots. Pothead surfer dude and a warfie. The warfie could be absolutely sensational.

We had a wharfoe at the start (Grinder) and IMO it is the best mascot we have had. The one we have now is crap.

It's not a fav of mine... I can't see why they can't have an Anchor as the mascot. It represents the harbour/freo/wharfies and it can "hit 'em real hard, send them down below" :)

History of our mascot, sourced Wikipedia.

1995-1999: Grinder - A cartoonlike docker man, in a similar style to Popeye, with a permanent snarl, oversized jaw and muscular arms.
2000-2001: The Doc - a straggly blonde-haired mascot, similar in appearance to Fremantle players Clive Waterhouse or Shaun McManus.
2002-Current: Johnny "the Doc" Docker - a blonde haired surfer with a surfboard under one arm is the Docker's official mascot in the Mascot Manor promotion for kids.

What's in a name?

When the Port Powers were first created - they had a mobile phone for a mascot......:D :D

much better now - they have a lightning bolt that looks like a crinkle cut hot chip....

correct and it was inflated by AlintaGas [WA gas supplier] so good for the sponsor :) and the docker players would run out on the field. This was replaced by the banner, made by the BannerTeam.

Also there was a bunch of wharfies [normally from the supporters dressed as them] with pulling a rock onto the field. Once they arrived in the middle of the ground, or thereabouts one of the wharfies would climb the rock and remove the embedded anchor from the top of the rock, lifting above their shoulders to the roar of the crowd :)

I keep missing the pre-game entertainment due to my poor timing at parking :) so this weekend I will try to get there by 20mins to see what they do these days.

They still pull the rock onto the ground and lift the anchor.

Once years ago the rock was inside a sea container and it was towed onto the ground. they exploded the container with the rock inside as the adelaide team ran past.

I've been overseas for most of the season but I'm pretty sure they still pull the anchor into the middle of the ground about 20 minutes before first bounce.

an exploding sea container with the opposition running past... did they change it coz of the safety factor? :)

You would be a resident of Dalkeith I'd wager!

I quite like the docker mascot. I think if you are new kid to the game and from the northern states of the east (where the AFL is pushing these mascots to encourage AFL uptake) the docker stands out. A cool surfer dude who plays footy in his spare time compared to a shady Port Adelaide character that looks like he is out to kill and several other characters that really dont appeal to the new generation! Johnny the docker may be a pot head surfer to older market but to the younger market (where the concept is geared) He's cool i reakon!
