For all the people that think the AFL is the VFL get a life!

First Victorian Rules/Australian Football game near MCG 1858

VFA 1877 - 1996

VFL 1897 - 1990 then 1997 - 2006

AFL 1990 - 2006

you mean robert harvey hasn't played 300 games then ???

i think he has you know ;)

hows about corey mckernan and chris grant having a brownlow stripped off them !!

I don't know if it's that's controversial but I always remember when Eddie broke the story about Carlton wearing the light blue jumper's to promote blue M&M's.I could'nt believe it was serious.I also remember a story about Gary Hocking changing his name to "Whiskas" for 1 game.

1. The move of South Melbourne to Sydney.

2. The near merger of Hawthorn and Melbourne. Would have been number one if it had happened.

3. The near merger between Footscary and Fitzroy

4. The merger between Brisbane and Fitzroy.

5. Port Adelaide's quest in 1990 to join the AFL and it's subsequent effect on the Crows joining the competition.

6. The controversial sacking of Norm Smith. Rated the coach of the century in 1996. Australia's oldest club has never been the same since.

7. The Leigh Matthews/Neville Bruns incident in 1985. Whilst worse incidents have occured on the footy field, it spawned trial by video, and changed the game. Gave the game's best player a police record.

it's all in the way you see it. suggest you look up controversial too ;)

con·tro·ver·sy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kntr-vûrs)
n. pl. con·tro·ver·sies
A dispute, especially a public one, between sides holding opposing views.

A close game, where there was no dispute over the rules is not controversial. The 1979 Grand Final had a controversial "decision" regarding the Harmes boundary incident for example, but the 1977 drawn Grand Final was not controversial at all. Just close and dramatic.

And didnt Jason Love ex Sydney ,Port Magpie do something similar?

Jason Love was the coach of the North Cairns Tigers who were the instigators of a shocking brawl prior to the match commencing (just after the anthem if i remember correctly) in the AFL Cairns grand final a couple of years ago

Several players received hefty bans and i think most north cairns players were suspended for at least a couple of weeks

made news in Queensland for a fair while....quite possibly the most controversial incident in Qld footy history

But i digress...just an interesting point i thought:cool:

Good list. I'd suggest that the Alex Lang/Doug Fraser betting scandal be in there somewhere, although it's hard to place it because it was so long ago (1910). But it was certainly big.

Another early one that's perhaps too obvious is the VFL breakaway itself.

I'd love to see a full length video of this, instead of just snippets on Sports Tonight.

haha yes

blokes just took off straight for the opposition as soon as the anthem was over...obviously premeditated

from what i caught the crowd was quite rabid too

and after jason love was suspended for god knows how long he still defended himself and kicked up a stink..grub

proof?the fact that the afl had found out that you had rorted the system for years, you really cant tell me the likes of kernahan, bradley, silvagni, hanna, greg williams ,fraser brown, koutafides and his boyfriend christou were all on peanuts not to mention other players,if u werent over that year matt clape must have been paid 1 dollar for the year

Ted Whitten given Special Leave from his Army Service by Robert Menzies so that he could play in the 1951 Finals Series would have to have been controversial at the time? He had originally been denied the Special Leave as the Army had a rule that no leave for sports would be granted to anyone.

A state government actually spending millions of dollars, not on health or education, which was their mandate, but on propping up their failing, basket case, "traditional" football teams. An entire state's football pride been dented so badly that a state government has thrown money at these clubs to try and redeem something over their numerically smaller but far superior interstate counterparts.

Money spent on football rather than healing the sick, helping the poor and educating their children - now that is contreversial.

You are one ignorant person. Every club in the league would have got state money at some stage, and if plans to upgrade AAMI stadium happened I would seriously doubt the SA government wouldnt be chipping in. Also the money the Vic government are providing to upgrade facilities also has an impact on the surounding areas, as the plan is for the clubs to provide facilities and such to local groups and people.

In my opinion the Chris Grant lost brownlow would have to be up there, still the only player to be reported by an AFL administrator, and for something which happens all the time.

how about wen collingwood lost their game against kangeroos because the ump didnt hear the siren. (sorry cant remember date)
