bit of talk recently about winning and losing cultures. Thought I might make my contributions...can't claim credit though....

...we do not intend to rest in idleness but shall strive with all our power to further this clubs unexcelled achievements.

To do this we believe:

That there is great merit and noble achievement in winning a premiership.

To be successful, each of us must be active, aggressive and devoted to the cause.

We agree that success is well within our reach and have confidence that each member of the team and management will suffer personal sacrifices for the common end.

Also we know that, should after striving to our utmost, after giving our everything, still not be successful, our efforts will become a further part of this clubs enviable tradition.

Finally, we concede there can be honour in defeat, but to each of us, honourable defeat of our club and guernsey can only come after human endeavour on the playing field has been completely exhausted.

It is all about winning, each game, each contest, every flag.

It's about hurting so bad if you lose you never ever want to lose again, it's about trying so hard you work until you throw up and then you work harder, it is about growing as an individual so you benefit the club.

There is the Premier team, and then the rest.

Its not about winning or losing, its how you play the game.

Okay, if that is true, which team won the 1970 flag?
or 1971?
or 1972?
etc.

Now which team was had the most good sports in it for each of those years?

Do you know?

Does anyone know?

Does anyone care?

Lets see ASG..

I was 1,2 & 3 at the time but if I say:

70: CARLTON beat Collingwood: No nice guys on either side there (except Peter McKenna... maybe) so relevance? Unclear..

71: Richmond or Hawthorn (with Hudson)?

72: Richmond? or Carlton (can't remember - are these last two correct? - haven't got Dan's VFL almanac for the early seventies...but is this right? Or did Carlton sneak another one of these) - Either way, Sheeds was playing for Richmond at the time as was Mal Brown, KB and Hart - all nice blokes I'm told - and they won... so again... relevance?

Sorry if this is all incorrect - I've pretty tired and its kinda hard to remember this stuff when you're surrounded by soccer...

Does this "just" apply to finals games or to home & away games as well.

Dutchy,

From the footy encyclopaedia that is my brain, I can tell you that the 1972 GF was between Richmond and Carlton. The score was a famous one :

Carlton 27.9.177
Richmond 22.18.150

In 1971, Hawthron beat St.Kilda by 7 points. By memory, the score was 82 to 75, but you might have to check that score. I know that margin was 7 points.

Wasn't a very nice GF by all reports. A bit of a spiteful affair, but apparently, the good guys got up, since St.Kilda were more interested in knocking Hudson out - they succeeded.

Okay Dutchman, that's all good, and it reinforces my view, people can name who won the flag, or they can look it up, but no-one can look up who was the nice guys for each year. The only importance we as a footy public place on any past seasons, is who won, we don't care about who came 4th, or 10th etc. We know who won the Brownlow for each season, we don't care that Fred Bloggs came 40th, but oh, he was a nice guy, it just isn't important to us.

So my whole point is we revere the winner, anything else just isn't important, we don't remember the good sports, we remember the winners.

As I said, winning applies to each game, each contest.
Are you setting me up Same Old's?
If you've caught me out well done
