Im was wondering earlier (hyperthetically of course) if a AFL team were killed in a plane crash on their way to a match. That is losing 26 players some support staff aswell as the coach. Obviously this would be tragic but what would the AFL do to get this team back up to AFL standard?

Give em a year or 2 to sort things out and recruit then give them No.1 pick and a couple of other first rounders. I t would be like bringing in a new team but with an old club

Didn't that happen to Manchester United or some other top English soccer team in the 50's? More than half the team was killed coming back from a match in Europe.

Would anyone notice a difference if Richmond didn't arrive for a game ?

I've always thought that wherever possible they should split and take 2 separate flights.
8 died in the Man U tragedy and that was a runway crash. Imagine if it had been a fall from the sky crash!!

I reckon that with the number of players not making the trip, they would allow them to select a filler team from the VFL /WAFL/SANFL and they would be back on the park the next week - albeit with black armbands and appropriate respect paid.

That'd just double the probability of a plane crash.

Must admit, I've thought about this scenario a couple times. One way could be to allow the team to select a player from each team (obviously, with some players being off-limits)?

Im just wondering what would happen. Lets say for arguements sake the team in question had just finished playing Round 6 and after the natch they got on a plane to fly home. This is when they crash. The AFL couldnt possibly give the team in question draft picks until the end of the season. What would the AFL do? Would the team have to sit out the rest of the season or would the AFL make sure they can field a team by using another recruitment method?

I'd say they would give the team the option, Sit out the season or play with their remaining players.

At the end of the season they would likely get assistance in extra draft picks and earlier picks. I doubt they would force other teams to give up players but they might give some salary cap concessions just for a year or 2.

It would be sad yes but they wouldn't be able to get the team back to top form too quickly it would take years.

Upgrade all rookies on that clubs list, play the players still alive, and able to get rookies from other clubs. The coach and assistants will be made up from other clubs or a previous coach not coaching, for example if it were to happen next year Sheedy or Daniher will be able to coach.

Would be interesting. With the AFL's extreme tendency to either overreact or not act at all it could be a "fun" situation to watch.

You would have to think that they would run something akin to the expansion drafts for Port and Freo at the end of the season and award them a couple of priority picks. Then it would be up to the club, they either use those avenues like Freo and stink for eternity or more like Port and be a contender within a couple of years. A few teams would actually benefit from this situation.

I doubt the salary cap will be an issue if they lose their best 23-25 players.

Give short term contracts to the best talent outside the AFL and play out the season, then let them poach a number of out of contract players + extra draft picks.

I reckon a supplementary draft could help. All 15 teams could nominate a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 3 players. The players could be guys that aren't getting a game at their current club and want to move. Most teams would nominated players down at the lower end, but guys comming towards the end of their careers and not getting a regular gig could nominate in order to finish off their playing days playing AFL football.
