Hey, can somebody clear something up for me? Does anybody remember Carlton's ruckman in the mid-80's whose name was Rhett Baynes? He wore number 3, but only played a handful of games. I heard that he fell on hard times after he left Carlton and I even heard that he was involved in some criminal activity. I apologize to Rhett's friends and family if this is all untrue. Can anyone help out?

Pretty sure he wasn't Carlton's ruckman and I'm not even sure what position he played, but I do know that he passed away sometime in the early 90's. I think he may have had some psychiatric illness that contributed to his death.

Suicide, lets leave it at that.

As mental illness is in focus this week..I think its important not to disrespect or misrepresent this young man's legacy.

Rhett Baynes was recruited by Carlton in 1985 after a prominent showing in the ruck for WA against SA.

He played 6 games in his first season, however his next season was punctuated by some aberrant behaviour...and he was ommitted from the team - Unfortunately during a night match where he did not play, he was interviewed by Lou Richards on 7 and made several wild accusations about the CFC match committee. At first it was thought he was serious...but he soon began rambling and the i/view was cut short.

Baynes, just like a lot of mentally il people, used to self medicate with alcohol and may have mismanaged his meds - as a result he was erratic in his behaviour and was essentially uncoachable.

After a spell on the sidlines he played 2 more games but was released by CFC and returned to Perth.

It is ALLEGED he was arrested for trying to hold up a retail outlet...but its likely he was suffering from either alcoholism or the effects of his ilness (most likely schizophrenia)

He committed suicide in August 1990 by overdose.

This information is all available through open sources.

I hope it reads as a relevant if tragic example of the ravages of mental illness.

That is the bump of the decade. Cheers for that.
