Society & Culture When going through the self serve at Safeway....

Have never used the self-service and never will -

Also - If you are actually wanting to lower your fruit and vegetable bill, why don't you go to an actual fruit and veg green grocer? - They are always infinantely cheaper than coles and woolworths/safeway

I do go to the grocer but wanted to find out if any posters had lite fingers;). Seems that no one wants to step forward and admit they do it:).

This never even entered my mind after months of using the self-serve until a mate told me he does it. I still don't do it. I'm not cheap.

I don't do it, but semi-related:

Can they PLEASE enforce a rule that no trolleys are allowed in? Seriously, the checkout chicks may not be einstein, but they know how to get your items through a buttload quicker than you do. I'm carrying a loaf of bread. I have to wait for your dumbass to require assistance 10 times to get through your trolley. Goddammit.

I have done it a couple of times

Its a joke of a system if i am serving myself and bagging all my food up myself i deserve to get a discount

On the topic there not even quicker with all the pop of screens and having to look for the fruit or veg its just a pain in the ass

What annoys me more is they are saving money and raising food prices and worst of all taking a job away from someone who needs the casual part time work like a single mother

All is forgiven my son:)

Exactly the reason why I don't participate with the corrupted system -

Rarely at either of the two super market giants, but when I am, I'll wait the extra couple of minutes and go through the normal checkout

Good for you whoever would rather wait behind two or three people with trolleys fully loaded. Before the self serve going to Coles to grab a few things was unbearable, now you're almost in and out.

Agree with the person who said there should be a trolley ban for self serve. Trolleys there just make no sense.

Time value of money etc. Also, how many greengrocers are open after 7pm each night?

If you are actually wanting to lower your fruit and vegetable bill, why don't you actually grow your own?

They are always infinitely cheaper than grocers?

Oh yer I'll go rip up the backyard now and whack a vegi patch in. Stuff it, I'll rip the front yard up aswel and put in some fruit trees:thumbsu:

working at one of these supermarkets for 5 years now i can say that it has not taken anyones job away. The express lines are still required until 7pm because we are faster than you and the demand is still there. then there is always one person who is there from start until the machine is emptied at the close of day. in the old system of four express registers it was rare to see more than 2 registers open as the 3rd would normally involve a manager and the fourth would be the longlife boy or girl. The policy was normally to only have one express register open past seven and the manager would assist if needed (nothing has changed)

I am truly sick and tired of hearing 'oh i dont go here they cost jobs' blah blah blah. it doesn't

and you don't think the two supermarkets would be that dumb not to factor in that people may put pink lady apples at five dollars a kilo at the price of a water melon, it will just lead to higher prices all round with the supermarket still winning overall. the buying power of the big two is extraordinary.

anyways that is my rant:p

Yeah that sounds about as practical as buying your everyday meat from the butcher, fish from the fishmonger, fruit and vegetables from the greengrocer and toiletries and other general groceries from the supermarket if you have a fulltime job mon-fri.

Judging by the profitability/dominance of the duopoly I'd probably say that convenience is king for most people.

I will generally shop at the supermarket for everything I need short of a special occasion, in that case I'll get a decent quality piece of meat/fish from a specialist.
