Part 2 of this thread is here:

Possible - but to the best of my knowledge Luke Sayers is not on public record stating he/Carlton made a formal offer to Lyon - OR, is Ross Lyon on public record stating he actually received any offer from Carlton...?

Or are you simply referring to the AFL media muppets who are paid to speculate and/or exaggerate and/or misrepresent snippets of information and/or which may also include SEN commentary, such as Bob and Andy's glorified pub-talk ramblings..?
They have been into him for ages. He’s had enough of the backflips

I'm not debating your opinion - I just think you'll find this 'Lyon to coach Carlton' story has been as much a media circle jerk narrative as it has been reality of perceived outcome...?
I also suggest the media back-flips, twists and turns on this narrative have been far greater than any of the actual stakeholders...!

Lost it at ‘gives themselves a chance’ and ‘worse list’.

Every man and their dog knows it’s curtains for the Essendon as soon as September rolls around, regardless whether they’re participating in Week 1 or not.

The average Bombers fan thinks Sam Draper is the next Max Gawn after beating up on 10 game luminary Lewis Young, but the reality is Essendon are running around each week with Peter Wright as their best key forward (when they aren’t rolling out Cale Hooker’s corpse) and James Stewart as their best key defender.

They’re still actually playing Tom Cutler.

Complete non-surprise we gave the brave Bombers a belting.

Definitely looking forward to seeing Cerra in action. Hopefully he enjoys the reunion with his favourite coach.

Bahahaha

how many times can one poster look like a fool??

You think Teague was hired due to an extensive selection process or because he won 6/11 games in his short stint as interim coach and that's what the fans and media were asking for?

I don’t know mate, your club is the one that said it. You’re not saying they lied on the official club website are you?

If Carlton doesn't know what Ross Lyon can bring to the table, no amount of PowerPoint presentations will convince them of anything else? What a bunch of dickheads. I have been critical of Ross the boss, but he is easily the best candidate available right now, it's insane! Isn't the idea to hire the best person possible for the job?

Too true. This entire nonsense about going through a "process" is all media BS and for some reason clubs feel the need to have to give this outward impression that its happening.

If Clarkson had said yes, do you think there would have been a "process" to follow still?

Actually agreed with Eddie on FC when he basically said why is a process occurring for Ross when Carlton approached him first. Normally that'd indicate you want him as the main man if you're chasing him.
Exactly. They made it clear publicly that it was Clarkson 1st choice, then Ross as back up plan. Before Teague had been sacked. Not sure whats happened but its possible that the board wanted to go through a 'process' for optics, the same way they went through an offical 'review' just so they could sack Teague and make it look like a long thought out decision. May have backfired once Ross told them to GAGF as they probably had him winning the job at the end. Or they went cold on Ross, decided to put him through a process where they could choose someone else without looking like they'd backflipped again.

Agree.

Adherence to a process to find the best coach (as deemed by a panel, not the President) is important.

While they would have appointed Clarkson without going through the process I can see why.

It takes courage to stick to a process and ask all your candidates (even your strongly preferred one as Lyon was) to undertake it.

Unfortunately it’s meant that some of the more experienced senior coaches in Clarkson, Lyon and Buckley are now out of the running, but you can’t win them all.

I think they need to broaden their horizons beyond experienced senior coaches and look at some of the ahighly rated assistants as well. The best one of them has gone to Collingwood, but at this stage I’d leave no stone unturned to find the best coach for the job.

If it’s Brad Scott, I would worry that the last 7 years of torturous rebuilding will go to waste middling out for the next decade before leaving the list in a total state of disrepair. On the plus side, he’s probably the only available coach that would have the courage to stand up to Mathieson. The others may find this challenge too difficult to overcome, as we have seen over the past decade.
Standing up to Matheson?
Surely he doesn't have a say in football stuff

They don't really have much choice now. Unless they want to have a crack at a Brad Scott or a Buckley. Doubt Buckley would be interested anyway.

Actually, not sure anyone but an assistant looking to take the next step up would be interested in risking that shitshow and I wouldn't blame them.

Will be interesting to see how the cowpat lands.
Seems notoriously hard to get experienced coaches to go through the process for any club.

Clarkson, Pyke, Buckley, Lyon and Macrae all out.

Voss, Scott, Graham, Harvey and Kingsley are the last ones standing.

I’d hate Kingsley to leave Richmond, but he would make a good coach that had strong support and protection from interfering influencers up the tree. Sadly I don’t think he would have that at Carlton. Lyon was perfect in that regard, and Scott would be as well.

Crazy Vossy to get the gig IMO

They could do worse.

AFL is bizarre for the lack of acknowledging learning and added experience.

Crazy Vossy at the Lions - fresh from a media gig and time with the AIS, no other coaching experience (none at senior level), really spent his career at 1 club and majority under 1 coach. Favourite son approach to coaching, coach and list management given authority to top up

And we're meant to believe that his time failing as a senior coach, overstating the list, and spending time at a growing club with some success (prelims etc) hasn't helped him at all? A decade on...

I'd be confident in Voss if I was a Blues fan.

I think you can approach him due to his record and his ethos, but still want to do due diligence. If he doesn't want to do the process and prove he's the right candidate, does he truly have the drive/passion?

Imagine being a club and asking a coach who has coached 4 GF's mulitple prelims to go through a "process" for a club that has been woeful for decades.

Doing the opposite would quite literally be what Carlton have been slammed for for a decade plus now.

They have to move past the messiah complex. Appointing Lyon based on Luke Sayers loving him, with Sayers probably appointed because some rich coterie blokes like him, would be the worst call. Appointing Lyon after going via a candidate process and him proving that yes he is more capable than a fresh new Teague/Kingsley/McCrae type, is a much better move.

Not appointing Lyon because he didn't want to do the hard work, just wanted to be the messiah, is again a good move.

It's probably the only thing Carlton have got right so far on a board/off-field level since the review was announced.

We want you because you have just the right skills we need.

And also, fill out these 2 forms each in triplicate, submit yourself to the following testing centres, and then we have 3 rounds of interviews for you to do.
