Guys,

Does anybody know if Josh is injured...havent seen him on the field in the VFL and is not on any injury list hope that is nothing wrong with him as I rate him highly in the same mould as Bundy and Duncan info would be appreciated

I believe he's out for a couple of weeks with an Achilles injury.

Hope he gets back but I don't reckon he's gonna make the grade unfortunately. I know many Cats fans think they'll all be stars but the truth is they won't. And while I'll happily admit to being wrong about Bundy coming along the way he has, I think this fella will be lucky to even sniff 50 games for the hoops.

Would love him to prove me wrong though.

Achilles injury.

Medical room this week said he's started running again, probably a couple of weeks away from vfl footy.

On Tweet the Coach Scott nominated Cowan and Simpson as young players they'd like to bring in when fit.

Re Cowan's future, I think it's important to remind people he played 3 games in his second year (very good effort) and was named in the bests 9 times out of only 13 games, and polled very well in the B&F. In fact you'll find that if you divided the B&F votes by games played (he only played 13 out of 18 because of his afl games) he would actually probably have won the B&F (Simpkin was a very deserved winner but he did play all 18 games which helped that). So for a skinny midfielder he's performed very very well to date. Now yes, this is a big year for him as he's out of contract, and it's not certain he'll make it, but he's done everything we could have asked of him to date and there's good reason for optimism.

Cheers for the optimism. Its ironic that on cats tv Bundy reckons Cowan will be a very good player

Thanks for the update PO was hoping to see him play some senior footy early in the year - but guess we will have to wait until after mid-season

He is not on a rookie deal is he ? ... so its not like he needs an upgrade to stay because its his 3rd year or anything.

I would think his efforts thus far, through limited playing time, would be enough to see him get another go....

And it's not like a GWS or GC would be sniffing around so I'm pretty sure he would be happy to stay.

If Wells picks him and Scotty rates him, that's 2 pretty good ticks in the staying column i reckon.

Also, given the very limited time I have seen him, i seem to remember he was pretty good at getting in and under as a mid, and I don't think you can ever have too many miss like that.... (especially with our contested possession being questioned...)

Best to his recovery...:thumbsu:

Go Catters

We're not going to be able to keep everyone. What if Scarlett, Wojcinski, Chapman, Enright, Pods, Corey and Hunt all decide that they want to go on for an additional year and their form suggests that they deserve it? That means younger unproven players will be delisted. Cowan's future with the Cats depends partly on what he does over the second half of the year and partly on how many veterans retire at the end of the year.

Cowan will not be de-listed. His senior games were very good last year and Scott has him ear-marked for bigger things. Expect him to part of senior squad for a few mid season games. Would imagine 5 games is achievable....very consistent performer.

I'm with you. On the back of seeing him play 20 minutes. Seems to have no awareness at all.

But... give me another 20 minutes in the ones before I make my final call :D:p

I know Steve Hocking is a massive rap for Josh. He wouldn't just say that.

DELIST?

I haven't read every post on this thread but surely we should all be learning now that the players come on at different rates , player get injured , players get home sick , players drop form and confidence ..... Gees hasn't Motlop proven to us that patience is its own reward. You pick the right kid , put the time in and you have an excellent chance of a good return.
This kid has already shown enough to say he can play at the level , we have a mature mid group and Id say delisting Cowan will not be high on the agenda.

That's all well and good, but unless we have a bigger exodus of retiring players than most are anticipating, we're probably going to have somewhere between 1-3 players delisted. And just which players they are is difficult to see at the moment. I think some rookies are going to have to be upgraded, if we want to retain them and we want plenty of picks in play for the 'super-draft'.

I hope Cowan, Hogan and a few others, who haven't had much opportunity, get a chance to show what they can do this year and I think it's harsh to single anyone out as delisting-material, but I doubt it's going to be like last year, where all our senior departures were retirements.

I think Hogan, Wojo, Scarlett, Chapman, Stephensen, Byrnes, Corey, Gillies.. are all possibilities for not being on the list next year. And of course we may lose a player that we don't really want to lose eg Menzel speculation

Hogan and Gillies are in more danger than Cowan (I know the latter in particular will be a controversial comment) as they have been here longer and have shown less than he has in the last 12 months. Byrnes could also be in trouble if he's still in the vfl later in the year.

I do agree with your general comments though that we will need to upgrade rookies (Walker and Stringer spring to mind) and we won't have 6 retirements like last year, and we will want several picks, so list spots will be extremely tight, which is maybe why they didn't activate the compo pick.

Cowan's definitely not safe but his development is on the right curve, he's definitely not the 'most likely to be delisted' player that we have at the moment.

I also think for what it's worth, that we will have several retirements at the end of the year (3 or more).

Stephenson's got a two year contract, doesn't he? There's no way we'd get rid of him, considering our ruck stocks at the moment, unless we make a move for someone like Warnock or Griffin. Hogan's a fair call, I really think he deserves an opportunity (as much as Cowan) in the seniors though. Byrnes as well, 29 at the start of next year and hasn't looked close to a best 22 player so far. Gillies has done more than enough for us to persist with him, in my opinion. I reckon if he's playing somewhere else next year, it will be his decision. And while Scarlett is a probable and Wojcinski, Chapman and Corey are all possibles, it's tough to see all four of them going. In my opinion, the two most likely delisting options from that list at this stage are Byrnes and Hogan and I don't know that Cowan is ahead of either of them at the moment. It's very early days though.

On Orren, no. Only 18 year olds get the standard 2 year deal. Older players negotiate their contract length so he may well be only on a 1 year deal. I do agree though, he'll be here next year anyway given the uncertainty over Vardy.

Byrnes would be in more danger at the same age and if he can find another club as a FA that will give him more gametime then he will probably go, in which case we would get a compo pick.

Btw, Corey already has a contract for next year so he won't be retiring. Chapman possible though I reckon.

On Gillies it's a tough one. He is needed list management wise as we don't have many young tall backs (forwards yes but not backs) and that may save him but he has not done more than Cowan in the vfl, much the other way round. I still think that Gillies either needs to be in the 22 come finals time or playing much better than he has at vfl level, or he won't be safe unless we get more retirements than we expect.

Hogan deserves opportunities but unless he's in the 22 by the end of the year I can't see him getting a 7th year on the list.

Depending on different criteria they could be not on our list in 2013

Thats not always delist, it may mean retirement or trade or voluntary departure (FA)

Even Corey who has a contract. IF his knee is fine , he will probably play on but if his knee is worse behind the scenes , I could see them offering him a mid coaching role to compensate for the loss of the last year.

The last super draft in 2006 we had 4 picks , unless we loose more players than planned (like Ottens this year ) I doubt we will any more than that.

I agree we probably won't take more than 4 picks (otherwise we would have activated the compo) but 4 plus 2 rookies up would still mean 6 spots, maybe 3 retirements and 3 delist. But that's a complete guess at this early stage of the year.

If it came down to it I would see Byrnes being lost before Cowan and Gillies
Given age and list management etc, I think Cowan offers more over the next 3 years than Shagga does ( and Im a fan of Byrnes too).

If he left in FA the club should receive some form of comp pick.

Don't we have to delist 3 players too? So one in FA and two more...

Having watched Melb game again I thought Gilles was far from our worst and will benefit from the run. Just wish we could play 25 at the moment...:D

From what I remember of Cowan he was hard at it a bit like Stringer has been of late. Reckon CS likes the tougher nuts...

Go Catters..

You don't have to delist anyone, but you do need to have a certain amount of picks (pretty sure it's at least four) in play for the national draft, which means you need four vacant spots on your list. Last year, we lost Mooney, Milburn, Ottens, Ling, Drum and Blake all to retirement, so we didn't need to delist anyone from the senior squad.

Go Catters..

You have to make 3 changes to your list but you don't have to take three draft picks as rookie elevations can count in your draft picks (e.g. take one draft pick, elevate two rookies, there's your compulsory three changes). Having said that I think we'll use at least 3 picks + any rookie elevations given this draft looks pretty good at this stage, so we will be tight for spots on the list.
