Listening to McGrath mic'ed up on the ground for the St Kilda game was what you want from a leader of a young group. He celebrated appropriately, had lots of enthusiasm and was reassuring when the young players did well/made mistakes.

Maybe Durham as VC as more of 'lead by example/effort' on field leader.

Love that some see “Heppell leadership”, the one which stuck fat through the club’s darkest days, and only considered another club at the end of his twilight contract, as a slight on another player because of dump kicks.

I think each type has their place; in a mature group that's ready to compete for top-4 and beyond a guy like Merrett might do well. In a young developing group, you probably need a guy like Heppell or McGrath who can unite the playing group and keep them focused when things aren't going well. Ideally you get a player who's the whole package; elite performance that can carry the team on-field, can ruthlessly drive standards, but can also unite the entire playing group and bring them all along if things aren't going well.

That said, sometimes great players just aren't great leaders. GAJ was as good as a player can be at Gold Coast but wasn't much of a leader.

Pity about the injuries because Rids would be in the conversation otherwise. But not much good having a captain that doesn't get out on the field.

I’d argue that in hindsight Merrett falls into this category. Elite on field talent and ruthless driving of standards aren’t enough to make someone a leader imo.

Leadership is its own skill entirely, and I would say Andy has an inherent talent for it.

Durham is a bit of a surprise package for the leadership group IMO, probably not a guy who'd be Captain but absolutely one you'd follow in to battle.

Archie Roberts one for the future too. Competitive beast and you'd never, ever doubt he had your back.

Absolutely, leadership-wise it’s less what they do but who they are on field with those two.

problem with Andy is as a player his flaws have shone through and it’s hard to take him seriously with his panicked kicks and rushed turnovers.

Teams take on the personality of their leaders and panicked and indecisive is not a quality you hope your team embodies

I keep thinking about him being part of the SF group. He’s a good contested mark and has incredible groundball pickup skills.

Mix that with some midfield as an impact stoppage player and see how things go.

Merrett can’t continue and McGrath must not be selected as Captain.

Caldwell, Durham and Roberts is the young leadership core but not ready to Captain yet.

Our interest in Steele is….interesting. Has runs on the board as a player and leader well beyond anyone on our list (outside of Merrett).

Determined, vocal, leads by example, passionate. Lock him in.

Leadership group: Durham, Redman, Langford. Also, Roberts; I actually think he should be an important inclusion to make connections between the older leadership group and our young core of players.
