Who will be your team's next star/elite player?

I should start by saying I'm using a wider definition of the word elite, so it's not just the top 5 players in the league.

If a player is one of the best in the league in their position/s, then using my definition they're elite. Cox, Sandi and Mumford are elite rucks for example.

On to the point of the thread, which player or players do you see becoming genuine stars of your club in the near future? I would nominate Reid, Rohan and Jack (injuries permitting) to really go up to that top level and to a lesser extent Lamb and Mitchell if he lives up to the hype.

Looks like my own clubs supporters are guilty of it too.

Honestly, the term "Elite" should be used IMO, for those who are in the Top 3 of their position in the league.

It's bandied about way too easily, sure the guys above may all develop into very good long term players but I could only see the first 4 fitting the criteria I outlined.

So we basically agree, and given there are about 6 or so key positions on the field then that would be 18 elite players. 18 out of 600+, that fits in with the dictionary definition of elite if you want to get technical.

Stop policing how people use the word elite mate

In all seriousness you're right and it's a major bugbear of mine, but it IS BF afterall...

Yet you failed to produce what you think is the "definitive" meaning of the word, despite being the first to get on your high horse about it. You're not above everyone on this site like you seem to believe you are.

It doesn't seem to me that many people are just listing every young player, some might be stretching their optimism a little but that's the minority.

JZ for us, I think the more of a run he gets at it he will keep improving, if his rate of improvement next year is the same as the last well WOWEE! Looking at other sides I feel for Menzel as he has already enhanced his rep but injury will now slow him from becoming a star. He looks that real x factor.
Obviously Martin from the tiges if not already will be their next big thing ovErtaking cotchin and delidio.
I also love the look of zac smith and d swallow, as they become men both already have the noise and athleticism to become stars.

Harsh on a few there I would have thought, Vickery for example has shown plenty, is 21 and a 200cm ruckman? Lots of star potential.

Maybe next year he can actually play in the ruck and show us what a star in the making he is. :thumbsu:

for freo you would have to say Fyfe... I also think that Morabito could become elite or there abouts (but it will depend how he recovers from his knee recon.

The next level down from elite id say Silvagni and Hill (hopefully he learns to break a tag poor kid haha, though if he is being heavily tagged in his 3rd year it shows how other teams rate him)

dont wanna derail this thread (actually, I wouldn't really care all that much if it happened), but on Sidebottom, who is one of my fave non-Cats players; where to Pies fans think he will ultimately serve his team best ?
I can see him as a Daicos-type in coming years, a canny goal-kicker who can have a run in the middle when required (and yes I realise Daicos started his career as a centreman and shuffled up to a forward pocket later in his career) ..

It's an interesting question as he's not exactly lightning quick, nor is he really physically imposing (although his pressure and tackling are excellent). Which means he's not exactly endowed with all the physical traits of a star full-time midfielder. But he already has one of the biggest engines at the club and it would be madness not to capitalise on that combined with his nous.

So to answer your question, as his career goes on I'd play him as a goal kicking mid who can play forward as required. Playing as a small forward these days is a different business from the days of Daics. It's too easy to go missing. Just ask... pretty much any good small forward! Rusty makes things happen so I'd want him as involved as much as possible.

Oh, and the other variable is Bucks. Will have to see what his plan is!

Christensen there is just something about the kid his work in heavy traffic is very good and can only get a lot better with more pre seasons under his belt to build up his core strength will see him hopefully take that next step

We already have Jack in the elite company and I guess the next two certainties in line would be Martin and Cotchin. Before I saw a guy rule out some of our other players who definitely have a much greater chance to be elite than some of the names been thrown around lately.

High Potential to be elite.

Vickery 200cm Ruck/Forward. Huge body, super agility, can take a grab and kick a goal. He needs a year or two and will certainly get the job done.

Rance FB. Rance needs to take one more step to be of the greats in the competition. This guy has played and defeated some of the behemoth forwards of this competition such as Jonathan Brown and Adam Goodes. (He didn't get an opportunity against Cloke or Buddy due to suspension) Somebody before said his DE was bad, but I do disagree seeing how he had 80% this year.

Can't be too sure yet but are really showing great signs:

Conca Mid going at pick 6, he was always destined to be a great player, but I reckon that he was the pick of lot. Is superb in traffic and has a penetrating kick, could be an extremely valuable asset.

Batchelor: This guy was a huge pick up at pick 30. He goes in hard, he provides great run and a flawless kick off the half-back. He can lock another player down. Complete replica of 2 time AA winner Joel Bowden.

Butcher and Hartlett need to get a good run with injuries.

If they just keep persisting, eventually they will get a chance to really show how much tallent they have.
I just hope Hartlett can get a huge crack at it, just so much to offer.

recently we have seen a few players which have been wrecked by Injuries, Egan from Geelong look like the next Jackovich, to retire after just 50 odd games, gettin AA honours, Gumbleton from Essendon is another, really must be devestating for the young players.
Ziebell is another, how good was it to see him really beginning to shine.
